Bio:

Pendragon are an English neo-progressive rock band established in 1978 in Stroud, Gloucestershire as Zeus Pendragon by guitarist and vocalist Nick Barrett. The Zeus was dropped before the band started recording as the members decided it was too long to look good on a T-shirt.[1] There were a few personnel changes in the early days, but since 1986 the lineup has remained relatively stable (with only the drummer changing twice since then) and the band is still active as of 2014.

Album:

It's been three years since the last PENDRAGON album, and now the band is gearing up a major European tour to present their new, long awaited new CD "Man Who Climb Mountains" to be released this week. For this fresh musical venture, guitarist Nick Barrett has gone omnipresent - he wrote all the music and lyrics - so this really has evolved very much into a personal vehicle for him. The usual bandmates of Peter Gee and Clive Nolan are on board and now joined by new drummer Craig Blundell."Men Who Climb Mountains" is a concept album but Barrett isn't spelling it out - you're going to have to work at this one.The musical mission of the band has clearly changed over the years, being always one of the greatest contemporary Prog Rock acts, but lately with the emphasis on 'Rock'.Don't have any hesitation; "Men Who Climb Mountains" it's full on Prog but much more contemporary sounding. The symphonic flourishes from the old days aren't quite so obvious - which isn't to say you won't notice Clive Nolan's presence. His terrific keyboards are still present and painting wonderful colours (check "In Bardo").It's simply that this new record is a bit more of a guitar driven vehicle than decades ago and Barrett's mournful solos (the brilliant "Faces of Light") have that nice Hackett-esque feel that always draws my attention. The - at places - spacey "Beautiful Soul" is beautiful indeed, "Come Home Jack" sounds desperate and urgent, while on "Faces of Darkness" Pendragon add muscle to the proceedings."Men Who Climb Mountains" is an album which Neo Prog fans, as well as those who love more accesible sounds from the genre, will revel in.There's some poppish melodies (especially during some choruses), floydian atmospheres, rhythmically easy to the ear guitars and a great sense of drive and passion all throughout.

Album:

The brand new PENDRAGON studio album “Love Over Fear” will be out early Feb 2020 on various configurations. This 3-CD Deluxe Edition includes two extra discs, one featuring the acoustic version of the album, and the other, instrumental.Pendragon was founded in 1978 by mastermind Nick Barrett in Gloucestershire. The band celebrated its first successes when the then manager booked the up-and-coming band Marillion for a tour together in 1982.As the two bands got along very well, further tours followed in the next few years, on which Pendragon could gradually expand their fan base in the wake of the high-flyer Marillion. In 1983, they finally played in front of over 30,000 enthusiastic viewers at the legendary Reading Festival and recorded a session for the popular BBC radio show Tommy Vance’s Rock Show. Further milestones in the history of the band were the foundation of their own label Toff Records in 1987 and the release of the album “The Masquerade Ouverture” in 1996,In recent years, Pendragon has had many good reasons to celebrate again: In 2016 they performed on the 20th Anniversary Tour for “The Masquerade Ouverture” in Z7. In 2018, they played several 40th birthday shows. And in 2020 the band come to us with brand new sound.“Love Over Fear” is the latest work by Barrett, which wrote all the songs. Most of them were created with the help of an acoustic guitar or the piano. Seems Barret put a lot of retro sounds into it, and the album felt really ‘back to basics’.As a proof, the ‘acoustic version’ of the album featured on the bonus CD2, sounds as good and natural as the main album ‘electric’.On the 3rd disc, we can hear the electric instrumental versions. On both CD2 & CD3 the arrangements of the songs are slightly different, and interesting.“Love Over Fear” brings to mind ’80s Pendragon, proggy and melodic, and that atmosphere of the bands of the era in UK.
