Bio:

April Wine is a Canadian rock band formed in 1969. According to the band, they chose the name 'April Wine' simply because members thought the two words sounded good together. The band has released more than 20 albums and has been together for more than 40 years after its beginning as a hard rock group. In 1988 Myles Goodwyn moved back to Canada from his home in the Bahamas. Almost immediately he began to be hounded as to whether there would be an April Wine reunion. Talks started slowly with other members. Some were interested but other commitments were getting in the way. An April Wine reunion was almost written off. But by 1992, April Wine returned to the stage, starting with a free concert in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. The band consisted of Goodwyn, Greenway, returning drummer Jerry Mercer and bassist Jim Clench, who hadn't played with the band since 1975. Filling out the act was third guitarist Steve Segal. The band yet again enjoyed cross-border touring success. In 1993 the band released the first "true" April Wine album in a decade, titled Attitude. It was certified gold in Canada soon after its release. Segal remained with the band through one more studio release, 1994's Frigate. The band would release another album in 2001, entitled Back to the Mansion. Also in 2001, the band's song 'Roller' was featured in the movie 'Joe Dirt'. Then in 2003 they released the live album called Greatest Hits Live 2003. In 2004 Silverline released April Wine's first DVD-A called From the Front Row ... Live!. From 2001 to 2004 their live shows were filled out with the multi-talented Carl Dixon (formerly of the bands Coney Hatch, and The Guess Who)on guitars, keyboards and backing vocals.April Wine entered into its 37th year as a band in 2006. On October 31, 2006, Aquarius Records released April Wine Rocks!, a brand new compilation of April Wine favourites, including a bonus live tune. A new album, entitled Roughly Speaking, was released on November 28, 2006.By the end of 2006, Clench had departed from April Wine for the second time, and was replaced by bassist Breen LeBoeuf in January 2007.A year later, Mercer announced his retirement, and was scheduled to perform his final show with April Wine in Calgary Alberta, ringing in the 2009 new year. Mercer's final scheduled show, however, was cancelled due to bad weather. Mercer was replaced by drummer Blair Mackay in January 2008.In 2010, April Wine was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, with Myles Goodwyn and Brian Greenway accepting the honor. The ceremony was held during the Juno Awards April 18, 2010 in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. On November 3, 2010, former bassist Jim Clench died in a Montreal hospital after a battle with stage 4 lung cancer.LeBoeuf left April Wine in July 2011 and was replaced by Richard Lanthier from the Yes tribute band called Close to the Edge. Mackay left April Wine in March 2012 and was replaced by Roy "Nip" Nichol who had performed with the Stacey Thorn Band, then Sam Hill, and most recently Spare Partz.April Wine continues to tour across Canada annually, and also plays festivals in Europe and in the United States, with the group now consisting of Goodwyn, Greenway, Lanthier, and drummer Roy "Nip" Nichol.

Album:

Compilation of 2 previously released albums: (1984) Animal Grace / (1985)Walking Through Fire.Remastered in 2009 by Andrew Thompson at Sound Performance, London, UK.Digitally remastered two-fer containing a pair of albums from the Canadian rockers abailable on one CD: Animal Grace (1984) and Walking Through Fire (1988). These were April Wine's last two '80s albums for Capital, both making the U.S. Top 100. Throughout the late 70's and 80's the band had been a popular live act with three Top 40 single hits to their credit. 18 tracks. BGO. 2009.Kudos to BGO for releasing these wonderful packages.April Wine returned with a new studio album in 1984 titled ‘Animal Grace’. There had been tensions in the band, creative struggles and rifts between Goodwyn (who had moved with his family from Canada to the Bahamas) and his four cohorts. This would be the last album featuring the classic line-up of Myles Goodwyn, Brian Greenway, Gary Moffet, Steve Lang and Jerry Mercer. Sales were modest and reviews were mixed but ‘Animal Grace’ does contain some vintage April Wine tracks, notably, ‘Gimme That Thing Called Love’ and ‘Hard Rock Kid.’ Similarly to ‘Power Play’, however, it is an uneven album. After its release the band announced a Farewell Tour and they subsequently went their separate ways. Although the band had broken up they owed one more album to their label. Released in 1985 (or 1986 depending on where you live), ‘Walking Through Fire’ features just Goodwyn and Greenway from the classic line-up backed by Montreal based session players Jean Pellerin on bass, Daniel Barbe on keyboards and Marty Simon on drums. Some fans dismissed the album although it does have a few excellent tracks. ‘You Don’t Have To Act That Way’, for example, is surely one of Goodwyn’s finest if most obscure achievements? ‘Love Has Remembered Me’ is a nifty AOR ballad and ‘Open Soul Surgery’ (written by Bryan Adams’ writer/producer partner Jim Vallance) is enjoyable enough. The opener ‘Rock Myself To Sleep’ was written by two members of Katrina And The Waves, Kimberley Rew and Vince De La Cruz. Again, as with all the post ‘The Nature Of The Beast’ releases, ‘Walking Through Fire’ is an inconsistent album albeit with some forgotten gems.In some respects these reissues represent the rise and decline of April Wine whilst also showcasing how truly great melodic rock can be when bands do it right. It also shows the genius of Myles Goodwyn as well as his egomaniacal nature. On the whole these three packages are an excellent set of albums and are probably best bought together as they illustrate the golden era of the band. There is no better time than now to revisit these albums. Canada has produced many fine rock bands but April Wine is just about one of the best. Kudos to BGO for releasing these wonderful packages.

Album:

APRIL WINE is one of the seminal bands from Canadian rock history, formed in 1969 and based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Led by singer-guitarist-songwriter Myles Goodwin since its inception, April Wine’s first success came with it’s second album, On Record (1972), which reached the top 40 in Canada and yielded two hit singles: “Bad Side of the Moon”, a top 20 hit; and “You Could Have Been a Lady”, a number 2 song in Canada.Prior to their third album, Goodwyn and bassist Jim Clench held auditions for new members and the replacements were drummer Jerry Mercer (formerly of Mashmakhan) and guitarist Gary Moffet. They finished the album, Electric Jewels, which the songs “Weeping Widow, ” “Just Like That” and “Lady Run, Lady Hide”, which would stay in April Wine’s set lists for many years. Following a 1975 tour, Jim Clench left to join Bachman-Turner Overdrive; he was replaced by Steve Lang. Now Renaissance Records is releasing ”Alive In America [Limited Collector’s Edition Remastered]” which over the years was considered an ‘official bootleg’ by the band, now with better mastering. This album was recorded during the ‘Harder… Faster tour’ on January 17, 1980 in Denver, Colorado at the Rainbow Music Hall.APRIL WINE always has been a criminally underrated act, and one of the best rockin’ bands alive. ”Alive In America” is just another proof of that. The sound quality of this ‘remaster’ is better than the previously available version of this recording – really ‘live’, no post-production – and while not perfect, it’s great to hear how good an arena band sounded back in the late Seventies / early Eighties.
