Bio:

Brother Cane is an American rock band that released three albums in the 1990s. Formed in Alabama in 1990 by singer and guitarist Damon Johnson and bassist Glenn Maxey, the line-up was completed by guitarist Roman Glick and drummer Scott Collier. The band's self-titled debut album was released in 1993, and after some line-up changes, this was followed by Seeds in 1995, and Wishpool in 1998. Brother Cane disbanded thereafter, but reformed in 2005, again in 2011, and became active again from 2022.The band's debut album, Brother Cane, peaked at #14 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, while the lead single, "Got No Shame", peaked at #2 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart on September 18, 1993.Maxey subsequently left the band, and Glick then switched to bass while the band added a new guitarist, David Anderson.Seeds was released on July 4, 1995, and the single "And Fools Shine On" stayed at number 1 on Billboard Rock Charts for six weeks. It was included on the soundtrack for Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers in 1995, as well as three other songs, "Hung on a Rope", "20/20 Faith", and "Horses & Needles".The band's third album, Wishpool, was released in March 1998, and featured the single "I Lie in the Bed I Make," which was their second #1 single on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, maintaining that position for four weeks. That same year, a live version of the band's song "Lead My Follow" was featured on a Birmingham, Alabama charitable album titled Live in the X Lounge. The album was released to benefit United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Birmingham, an organization in the band's hometown.Brother Cane disbanded after touring for Wishpool, despite a great deal of radio play and live success, experiencing problems with their record company and issues surrounding record distribution. In 2005, Brother Cane reunited for two concerts. One of the shows was released as a two-disc set with previously unreleased backstage, offstage, concert footage (a 40-minute show as the opening act for Van Halen in Fresno from '95) and interview content. Brother Cane again reunited for a brief tour in 2012.In March 2022, Brother Cane announced they would reunite for live shows later in the year. Johnson is rejoined by original bass guitarist Glenn Maxey, along with Buck Johnson (Aerosmith, Hollywood Vampires) on keyboards, Tony Higbee on guitar (Tom Keifer Band), and drummer Jarred Pope from Johnson's solo band. The first show was at the Northern Lights Theater in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on April 22.Further shows in Birmingham, Alabama and Nashville, Tennessee are also planned, with the live set to feature songs from the band's first album, including songs never played live before, plus hits from the later albums. The band performed a full tour in 2023 to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the release of the Brother Cane album. Johnson stated: "I’m just over the moon about this. Brother Cane fans are some of the most passionate that I've encountered in all of my travels. I'm certainly proud of all these songs, and the guys and I are looking forward to bringing them to the people once again

Album:

BROTHER CANE was the first major band from now renowned vocalist / guitarist Damon Johnson (BLACK STAR RIDERS, ALICE COOPER, JOHN WAITE). The band’s self-titled Virgin Records debut is a testament to the South, a stiff shot of oak barrel-aged rock and blues, with just the right touch of Americana thrown in for good measure.Bad Reputation Records has remastered the 1993 debut album “Brother Cane“, reissuing a CD including 2 rare tracks as bonus material.Produced by Jim Mitchell (who co-engineered GUNS N’ ROSES Use Your Illusion I and II) and co-produced by expert Marti Frederiksen, ”Brother Cane” bristles with energy born from the roaring twin guitars of Johnson and Roman Glick and built upon the solid foundations of bassist Glenn Maxey and drummer Scott Collier. From the gripping harmonica intro and the Zeppelin-esque blues fury of opener “Got No Shame” to the slamming Southern vibe of “Hard Act to Follow” and on through the delicate texturing of “Woman” – a tune that builds into an all-out amp blowing frenzy – the album showcases BROTHER CANE’s high intensity aggressiveness and muscle while also letting the listener in on the band’s quieter, more introspective side.“Hey, we’re from Alabama, not from Los Angeles or Seattle,” laughs guitarist / vocalist Damon Johnson, who vas raised on a farm outside the tiny town of Geraldine. “We just said let’s be ourselves and the music will come out naturally.’ That’s what sets us apart and makes us different.”The distinctly Southern flavor of Brother Cane reflects the Alabama upbringing of the entire cast of musicians, including guest keyboardist Chuck Leavell (member of the Allman Brothers, and touring mate of the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton). Using all local players was a small but important gesture for the band, and it contributed greatly to the album’s rootsy, unpretentious feel.Brother Cane highlights the group’s pure approach to their music — it reflects the emotional legacy of Southern living, of tightly knit families, rugged individualism and unflinching honesty. Ego-tripping is given the boot – you’ll find no rock star posturings here.Soulful, at places fiery and self-confident, Brother Cane rocks with groove too, and band that released 3 album before Damon started a successful solo career and became one of the most requested musicians from the last 25 years. Currently, Damon reformed Brother Cane and there’s anew album in the making.

Album:

The magnolia symbolizes resilience, so it is no wonder that BROTHER CANE have chosen to highlight the mighty tree for it’s return to original recorded music for the first time in… 28 years!”Magnolia Medicine” also sees the return of the creative partnership of singer / lead guitarist / principle songwriter Damon Johnson and award-winning producer & songwriter Marti Frederiksen. As guest we find living legends Johnny Van Zant and Rickey Medlocke (ex Blackfoot). The album opens with ‘If This Means War,’ a fierce, no-apologies hard rocking anthem that makes it clear this is no tentative reunion. BROTHER CANE’s return is bold, soulful, and fully committed … this record isn’t easing back into rock and roll, it’s kicking the door wide open.Production is huge, highlighting the tight musicianship and… Damon Johnson. We can’t get enough Damon Johnson. It’s a crime this talented dude didn’t recorded more so far… don’t worry, in ”Magnolia Medicine” he delivers an arsenal of talent. All songs are terrific. Believe us. But we need to mention ‘Prince Charming’. Written the day after Gary Rossington’s funeral in March 2023, the song came to Johnson fully formed. A tribute to a man who had become not just a hero but a friend and mentor - the legendary Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist who had personally chosen Johnson as his replacement before passing away at the age of 71. Now, with the backing of Skynyrd bandmates Johnny Van Zant and Rickey Medlocke, ‘Prince Charming’ is an emotional piece of art. This is one of the best album you’ll hear this year… go and get it!

Line-Up:

Damon Johnson - Lead Vocals, Guitars

Jarred Pope - Drums (from Tom Keifer’s band)
Buck Johnson - Keyboards, Backing Vocals (from Aerosmith)
