Bio:

Phenomena is a rock concept around a supergroup formed by record producer Tom Galley, Metalhammer magazine founder Wilfried Rimensberger and Tom's brother, Whitesnake guitarist Mel Galley. Contributors were leading rock musicians such as Glenn Hughes, Brian May, Tony Martin and John Wetton amongst others. In a cover story, run by Kerrang! magazine in 1985, Phenomena's production of rock songs based on a story line running through a whole album, attached to artworks and other multi-media aspects was credited for the "return of the concept album" in the 1980s. Phenomena released three albums in the 1980s and early 1990s, and had a number one hit single in South America with "Did It All For Love", while the album charted across Europe, in Japan and Brazil. An accompanying music video was shot and produced by Rimensberger in conjunction with Spidercom Films at London's Abbey Road Studios, and represented a video trailer for the Phenomena - Dream Runner movie project.More albums followed without the involvement of Rimensberger and released under the branding of 'Tom Galley, the creator of Phenomena'. The latest, Awakening, was released in March 2012. Whilst all were well received, they were not comparable to the original Phenomena as they lack the typical concept story running through the whole album, international, mixed genre musicians’ matrix and multi-media links. In interviews Tom makes clear, that these albums released under a solo contract with the Escape label, should not be compared with the original Phenomena. He has recently joined forces again with Rimensberger and the 2 are working together again for the first time in 25 years. There were rumours in 2014 of both the band playing live at Sweden Rock Festival in June 2014, plus a secret gig in London prior to the event. However, the rumours proved to be unfounded.

Album:

Japanese new label Wasabi Records has been doing an amazing work reissuing true '80s classics (some featured at 0dayrox), and few months ago released the three first essential PHENOMENA albums in a cardboard sleeve packaging replicating its UK edition LP design and a terrific, fresh 2017 remaster. The project debut, self-titled "Phenomena" includes 5 great bonus tracks as well.Phenomena was a musical concept masterminded by record producer Tom Galley, Metalhammer magazine founder Wilfried Rimensberger, and Tom's brother, Whitesnake guitarist Mel Galley.Contributors to perform the songs were stellar; Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple), Don Airey (Ozzy Osbourne), and a trio of ex-Whitesnake members -- Mel Galley, Neil Murray and Cozy Powell, among others. The story began in the year 1983 when Tom Galley wrote a couple of short stories with a transcendental background. Backed by record label Bronze, the recordings for the album "Phenomena" started soon which finally hit the stores in 1985.Besides the extraordinary concept story, as mentioned, the elite of the British hard rock scene were part of the record. However, musically, the overall sound in "Phenomena" is uber polished, mid-'80s keyboard-heavy melodic rock, and Phenomena perfectly fit in with the musical 1985 climate. But there's one thing that made "Phenomena" so special... "atmosphere".While the music bounces through light and shade, traditional hard rock riffs and AORish melodies, the atmospheres and 'sonic aura' in this record are unique."Phenomena" is a key album in '80s Melodic Hard Rock. An absolutely essential record where all songs are superb and performances shine, for many, the best Glenn Hughes work ever. This really welcomed 24-bit remastering on this awesome album, including 5 treasurable bonus tracks.

Japanese new label Wasabi Records has been doing an amazing work reissuing true '80s classics, and few months ago released the three first essential PHENOMENA albums in a cardboard sleeve packaging replicating its UK edition LP design and a terrific, fresh 2017 remaster."Phenomena III - Inner Vision" was the third album from the project, here including 2 bonus tracks. For "Phenomena III - Inner Vision" mastermind & producer Tom Galley wanted a more 'normal band' status, a stable line-up to present the album in a live tour as well.So we find here the great Scott Gorham (Thin Lizzy, 21 Guns, Far Corporation) on guitars, Michael Sturgis (21 Guns, Asia) handling all drums, Leif Johansen (21 Guns, Far Corporation) on keyboards, and terrific vocalist Keith Murell (Mama's Boys, Airrace, almost in Foreigner too). There's also guitar contributions by Queen's Brian May, and even Freddie Mercury show interest to do some back-up singing for the album, but due to his illness not managed to, eventually. In terms of sound, this is the 'less British" Phenomena album, definitely Americanized and with a strong, AOR feeling all over.In my book this is a great thing, and while some fans missed the atmospheres of the first album, "Phenomena III - Inner Vision" is a wonderful slice of lush, polished early '80s AOR / Melodic Rock. There's the core of 21 Guns in the line up, so comparisons are inevitable, also Far Corporation for sure. Add to that Murell's melodic smooth pipes and the result is highly melodic.'Rock House', the killer 'Banzi', midtempo 'What About Love', the bright 'Into The Fire', 'Secret Of Love' and its great keys, the kicking 'If You Want To Rock', the super AOR of 'How Much Do You Love Me'... all are superb tracks in an album that shoulda been into any 'best of' of late 80s / early 90s AOR / Melodic Rock list. This is really welcomed 24-bit remastering on this delicious abum, plus 2 treasurable bonus tracks (including a new version of the immortal 'No Retreat No Surrender') material with a different line-up from what would have been album #4.

Line Up:

Keith Murell - vocals
Scott Gorham - guitars
Brian May - guitars
Leif Johansen - keyboards
Michael Sturgis - drums

However, the rumours proved to be unfounded.

Album:

Metalville Records is reissuing PHENOMENA‘s album ”Psycho Fantasy” on LP / 2-CD Digipak version featuring refreshed artwork and including into a bonus disc the original demos from the “Psycho Fantasy” sessions released for the first time.Tom Galley started the wonderful Phenomena project in the 80s and the first 3 albums featured big names from the hard rock scene such as Glenn Hughes, Cozy Powell, Don Airey, Neil Murray, Brian May, Mel Galley and John Wetton, among others. For the fourth Phenomena installment Galley had again illustrious names like Hughes, Tony Martin (ex Black Sabbath), Keith Murrell (Mama’s Boys), Lee Small (Lionheart) and more on lead vocals.Galley is the main songwriter and producer of the album, and invited his old friends Glenn Hughes, Tony Martin, Keith Murrell, Lee Small, Matt Moreton, Joy Strachan as the vocalists; Mel Galley, Andy Shortland, and J.J. Marsh (Glenn Hughes Band, Tomas Bodin) on guitars; Richard Lynn on bass; Orlin Radinsky on drums; and last but not least Ian Rowlands and Tom Brown on keyboards. This Phenomena 4th output proves to be a darker and more experimental work than its earlier hard rock-based versions. Galley has incorporated lots of electronic keyboard patches, acoustic elements, and vocalists with varied singing styles. The result is both a heavy, rocking album with numbers like “Sunrise” and “Higher”; as well as more textured cuts that have aggressive vocals duelling with multiple vocal harmonies on “Killing for the Thrill”. Songs like “So Near So Far” and “60 Seconds”, on the other hand, project a more progressive sound, combining subtle keys with slow melodies on the former; and electronics and acoustic guitars supplementing beautiful female vocals on the latter.“Crazy Grooves” will no doubt be a shock to the typical rock fan in that it is infinitely layered, featuring many vocals, and a thick groove beneath it.Galley’s writing here is more focused on emphasizing Hughes and Martins’ vocal melodies with the other singers backing them up. Glenn is on top form as ever and it’s good to hear talented Keith Murrell again.Whilst ”Psycho Fantasy” doesn’t reaches the classic status of the first two LP’s this is nonetheless a damn fine album and a must for fans of the Phenomena project. The original takes / demos showcases an interesting view of the album creation and development.

Album:

Remastered edition plus bonus track.Tom Galley started his Phenoma project in the early 80’s and with some early radio success this involvement lead him to work with some of the biggest names in the British Hard Rock scene at the time, such as Glenn Hughes (DEEP PURPLE, HTP), drum legend Cozy Powell (RAINBOW, WHITESNAKE a.o.), Don Airey (DEEP PURPLE), Neil Murray (WHITESNAKE) etc. The first Phenomena release was received to great acclaim and such effort after that has propelled the series into what is now the 6th album in the series. Now myself personally even though I like the amount of talent that the Galley brothers have orchestrated over the years, I can’t help but to remember the great vocals of Glenn Hughes on that first debut album which was a automatic appeal from the git go. Obviously since then Hughes has moved on to make tons of music and is currently in the Black Country Communion super group. The new album “Awakening” follows no concept in relation to the previous Phenomena albums, but what it does is stamp the listener with each individual song showcasing each guest singers vocal aptitude and range. With this in mind you have some very good guitar players taking contributing to the record as well and the production was handled by both Tom Galley and Martin Kronlund. If you look at the singers compiled you will take notice at the quality of their craftsmanship, and you can easily witness this in the songs on this record. I have always admired these type of projects as is quite a task to try to fit all different styles and voices, and like other similar projects the likes of Voices of Rock and son on, eventually the vocalists and guest musicians end up making the record what it is.With this in mind we delve into these tunes and some jump out automatically, like the shattering rock steady vibes of “Shake” which amps up the noise with an anthem coutesy of the vocals of Mike Dimeo. Another amazing melodic rock soaring track is the Terry Brock led “Fighter” which has Brock doing his best Jim Jamison impersonation, great anthem tune with a nice chorus and bridge. The fantastic British singer Lee Small drops some heavy lines on the power rhythm on the prime number “How Long”. Rob Moratti the Canadian Melodic Rock voice contributes on the smooth rock ballad in “Homeland”, making me even more anxious to hear his new album with his former band Final Frontier very soon. The last tune has a nice pop/rock feel with a smooth chorus featuring the vocals of Chris Antblad with the JAVA Gospel Choir. Pretty nice number to end the record on an upbeat happy note.Awakening is one of those albums that sounds great on your mood on one day and may sound completely ordinary on other days. This is not to say that the music doesn’t live up to the project past efforts, but it just depends on the vibe of each song as the different styles of singers demand a separate listen. The production is very well done as expected overall is a nice effort that wont break any barriers, but keeps the spirit of the Phenomena chain and Tom Galley moving forward. Regardless of personal choice or the fact that Glenn Hughes hasn’t been involved with this project since the early beginning, there is still rumors going around about a possible stable singer and a major record deal to bring back the original Phenomena sound.

Album:

Remastered edition.People should learn to expect a little awe and mystery. Phenomena takes us upon a journey where there is nothing pretty about the protagonists of the story that we shall meet along the way. The subject is good against evil. The story began in the year 1983, when Tom Galley wrote a couple of short stories with a transcendental background. Backed by record label Bronze, the recordings for the album “Phenomena” started soon which finally hit the stores in 1985. Besides the extra-ordinary concept story both musicianship and the names involved with the project are highlights to mention. Names such as Glenn Hughes (DEEP PURPLE, HTP), drum legend Cozy Powell (RAINBOW, WHITESNAKE a.o.), Don Airey (DEEP PURPLE), Neil Murray (WHITESNAKE) – the elite of the British Hard Rock scene had joined the project.“Phenomena” received high critical acclaim in the press and extremely good sales. The second PHENOMENA album “Phenomena II – Dream Runner” was released in 1987 and was welcomed with a similarly warm response. The musicians around the Galley brothers had changed slightly, so that this album in the end featured contributions from Ray Gillen (BADLANDS, BLACK SABBATH), John Wetton (ASIA), Scott Gorham (THIN LIZZY) and Max Bacon (GTR), amongst others. With new label Parachute involved, in 1991 the time was right for “final part” of the conceptional story; Phenomena III – Inner Visions“. Besides Brian May (QUEEN) and Keith Murrell (AIRRACE), you’ll here also find performances by Michael Sturgis (A-HA) and Scott Gorham (THIN LIZZY). The Complete Works were released in a triple fold out Digipack by Escape Music (ESM142). However, the PHENOMENA concept continued in 2006 under the banner “PsychoFantasy”, (ESM125 ecolbook and 125r regular version) which strictly follows the traditions of its three predecessors. Besides the concept story background, you will once again will find a whole bunch of amazing artists performing on this record: Tony Martin (BLACK SABBATH), Glenn Hughes (DEEP PURPLE), Keith Murrell (MAMA’S BOYS) - and Mel Galley (WHITESNAKE, TRAPEZE). To bring us up to date there is another exciting instalment in the chapter as Psychofantasy II “Blind Faith” and this will hit the streets very soon. With an exciting array of musicians and vocalists this is already causing great excitement in the rock world and will prove to be a monster hit as the next part of this enthralling story unfolds.
