Bio:

Heart is an American rock band which first found success in Canada and later in the United States and worldwide. Over the group's four-decade history, the band has had three primary lineups, with the constant center of the group since 1974 being sisters lead singer Ann Wilson and guitarist Nancy Wilson. Heart rose to fame in the mid-1970s with music influenced by hard rock and heavy metal[1] as well as folk music. Their popularity declined in the early 1980s, but the band enjoyed a comeback starting in 1985 and experienced even greater success with album oriented rock (AOR) hits and hard rock ballads into the 1990s. With Jupiter's Darling (2004), Red Velvet Car (2010), and Fanatic (2012), Heart made a return to their hard rock and acoustic folk roots. To date, Heart has sold over 35 million records worldwide, including over 22 million in album sales in the U.S.The group was ranked number 57 on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock". Some of the backing vocals were provided by Don Wilhelm, who had been in a group called The Army with Steve Fossen and Roger Fisher in the 1960s.On June 29, 2004, the album was re-released by Epic and Legacy Recordings in a remastered expanded edition, containing two bonus track: the studio outtake "Jackleg Man" and a live version of "Break".

Album:

Classic ’80s HEART album. The group’s tenth studio album “Brigade“ never has been remastered, but due to its quality production and mastering,I think it doesn’t need to.This Japanese Limited Edition is a pearl, including a Bonus CD and housed in a deluxe red-blood velvet-textured slipcase with a gold stamp. While released in 1990, the sound & production in “Brigade” is pure Eighties – 1989 in fact. After a three-year gap between albums, “Brigade” featured the #2 Billboard Hot 100 hit “All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You” and reached number three on the U.S. Billboard 200, followed by a successful world tour.Like its predecessor ‘Bad Animals’, the album is notable for the contribution of talented outside songwriters.Including songs penned / co-penned by the likes of Robert John “Mutt” Lange, Holly Knight, Sammy Hagar, Diane Warren and the fantastic Tom Kelly / Billy Steinberg (i-Ten) AOR factory, plus Richie Zito’s out-of-this-world production, you have a winner here.HEART - Brigade [Japan Ltd Deluxe Edition + Bonus CD] discs. On songs like “Stranded”, “Secret”, “I Want Your World to Turn”, the rocking “Tall, Dark Handsome Stranger” or the mega-hit “All I Wanna Do Is Make Love to You”, female-Rock vocals don’t get any better. Although my favorite Heart albums are the previous ‘Bad Animals’ and 1985s ‘Heart’, in my opinion “Brigade” features the best Ann Wilson vocal performance of her career. The bonus CD in this Japanese Box includes songs worth your attention, believe me.You have the awesome AOR of “Cruel Tears” co-written with Mark Spiro, the superb ballad “(I’ll) Never Stop Loving You” (penned by AOR stalwarts David Cassidy / John Wetton), and the midtempo “The Will to Love”, again from the Tom Kelly / Billy Steinberg pen.CDs housed in a gold embossed burgundy velvet box with bellyband obi-strip, also including 24-page picture booklet and lyric insert.

Album:

Here we have a very interesting choice of album for Audio Fidelity specialists to tackle: "Magazine", by HEART, remastered by Steve Hoffman and pressed on a wonderful sounding SACD."Magazine" was certainly commercially successful on its first release in Canada and the U.S., albeit in an unauthorised version that the record company released rather spitefully following fractious attempts by the group to renegotiate their contract. In fact, it is the third album, that should have been second.Winding back the clock a little throws some light on the situation. Perhaps also, it becomes a cautionary tale for bands trying to forge a career from their music, without due regard to 'devil in the detail' contracts, and the loss of artistic control. With this success of their debut album behind them, Heart began demoing new songs for the second contractually obligated album. In the band's estimation, their success put them into a good position from which to renegotiate their contract. Their label Mushroom Records thought otherwise, and the two parties slid into a long and nasty legal battle.Work on the sessions ground to a halt. Heart left behind the unfinished tracks, and somehow managed to score a deal with Portrait Records. Starting from scratch, they completed what would become their record "Little Queen".On the side, however, Mushroom decided they had the right to cobble together the working demos, and a few live tracks, and release it as "Magazine".Remarkably, and provocatively, it came with a printed disclaimer pointing out that the album had been compiled without the group's assent, but that the company wanted to make sure the public got to hear the songs! It had sold quite well before Heart got wind of it, and the unauthorised edition was withdrawn. But in yet another legal move, Mushroom were then successful in getting the agreement of a judge in Seattle to verify that they had ownership of the tapes.Somewhere along the line a compromise was reached, whereby Heart could go back into the studio, and do whatever they felt musically valid, to rescue the demoes. This may have meant new takes, dubs, remixing, deleting or adding tracks. The resulting album would retain the title "Magazine", and would be owned by Mushroom. So, the mooted second album, became the third album. This 'authorised' edition was released in April 1978. Surprisingly, it did quite well, reaching top twenty. Perhaps no one was more surprised than the band themselves. The album kicks off with "Heartless" which is really the very template of Heart in rocking out mode, a cut that landed on the Top 40 charts. "Devil Delight" follows, a very tasty delight indeed, with slabs of dueling guitars and Ann wailing away in Force 10 mode."Just The Wine" is a gentle, lilting tune, with touches of mellotron and washes of real strings. Nancy's gorgeous acoustic guitar holds it all together. It stills sounds great."Without You" is an interesting rendition of the classic Badfinger track from their No Dice album. Yup, the one Harry Nilsson turned into a classic. Ann's vocals are incredible, she has the chops to belt out like Janis Joplin here.Title track is a relatively laid back piece of AOR lifted by nice synth flourishes and some twisted guitar over a straight 2:4 beat. I always loved this tune."Here Song" is the sort of quiet and pensive track that Heart laced through their best albums. Nancy is one of the great acoustic players and when Ann has the chance to rein it in, she really shows her pipes. The last two tracks are live: "Mother Earth Blues" is Heart airing their blues roots lively with a Led Zeppelin nod, slow and chugging, while album closer is the stomping, sincere take on the old chestnut "I've Got The Music In Me".This is a great mastering of some very vintage tapes. Steve Hoffman has done a remarkable job revisiting this album, and saving all that is good about it for the old die-hards and perhaps some new listeners. The sonics are excellent, and really, the only downside is the troubled history that resulted in the stitched together nature of the album as it is.If the last two tracks were deleted, and two other studio tracks added, this would have garnered much more respect and regard. So, the first six tracks are excellent, the closing two, well, they are of their time.

Line Up:

Ann Wilson - vocals, flute, acoustic guitar
Nancy Wilson - guitar, backing vocals
Roger Fisher - guitar
Howard Leese - guitars, keyboards, sitar, backing vocals
Steve Fossen - bass, backing vocals
Michael DeRosier - drums

Tracklist:

01. Heartless
02. Devil Delight
03. Just The Wine
04. Without You
05. Magazine
06. Here Song
07. Mother Earth Blues
08. I've Got The Music In Me

Album:

Heart’s 15th studio album, Fanatic, released in October 2012 crowned the band’s renaissance in much the same way Now What?! did for Deep Purple in 2013. Both releases underlining that the passing of the years/ decades doesn’t have to equate to an increasing reliance on distinguished back catalogues. So, while the casual observer might question the release of yet another Heart live DVD / CD, Fanatic Live from Caesars Colosseum is in fact a welcome release – especially as the UK rarely gets the chance to witness the band in the flesh. And certainly not in the provinces. The Fanatic Live set is cropped for TV broadcast from the band’s North American 2012 leg of the promotional tour. The gig was on 28th July 2012 in Windsor, Ontario, with ‘Magic Man’ and a cover of ‘Who’s Love’ and ‘Reign O’er Me’ omitted, presumably on the basis of TV scheduling and CD running time but it’s nevertheless a terrific setlist. As you’d expect the ‘greatest hits/ best of’ are all present and correct including ‘What About Love’, ‘Straight On’, ‘Dog & Butterfly’, ‘These Dreams’, ‘Alone’ (which gets the biggest reaction), ‘Crazy On You’, and the timeless ‘Barracuda’.Fanatic, though, is well represented with five numbers plus ‘Headless’ and ‘Even It Up’ (from Magazine and Bebe Le Strange respectively) get a rare airing. The only personal disappointment was the omission of the funky Prince like ‘Skin and Bones’ from Fanatic. Interestingly 2010′s Red Velvet Car is completely bypassed (as is everything pre-Fanatic back as far as 1987).Now, one of my all-time favourite rock DVDs is the magnificent Alive In Seattle and it’s scary to think this performance is a whole two decades later. But Ann and Nancy Wilson aren’t a pair to go through the motions and Fanatic Live finds them, to use a well-worn cliché, ‘rolling back the years’ with a powerhouse performance.Highlights? Well the roll of honour has to go to their mid-eighties material – the string section-accompanied ‘What About Love’ raises goosebumps, the loose jam leading into ‘Straight On’ rocks, the stripped back ‘Dog and Butterfly’ is simply stunning, and it just doesn’t come any better than the pairing of ‘These Dreams’ and ‘Alone’.As always with Heart, the DVD is beautifully shot and the uncluttered stage set looks marvellous bathed in cool blues and greens. And Ann and Nancy look pretty foxy as well. Oh, to see them live on these shores.

Line-Up:

Ann Wilson – vocals, flute, guitar, keyboards, percussion, violin, autoharp (1972–present)
Nancy Wilson – vocals, rhythm guitar, mandolin, keyboards, synthesizers, harmonica (1974–1995, 2002–present)

They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.

Album:

Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame members HEART return July 8 with "Beautiful Broken", their sixteenth album and their first on Concord Records. HEART has sold over 35 million records, and this anticipated album is their first in four years. "Beautiful Broken" finds Ann and Nancy Wilson exploring new songs, but taking some of their favorite "cherry picks" from their catalog and rerecording and rethinking them. The title track and first single features a dynamic guest vocal contribution by METALLICA's James Hetfield with Ann Wilson. A preview clip is available below."There is really a seventies feel to this record both in the sound, and the way we got to the emotional core of each song," says Nancy Wilson. "We picked songs that we always wanted to re-do, plus we've added three new tracks. On both new and old, we have the band playing together the way we used to. This is classic HEART."The seven tracks that were pulled from the HEART catalog were tunes both Nancy and Ann wanted another shot at, due many times to how they were initially produced. Songs like "City's Burning", "Down On Me", and "Sweet Darlin'" have always been live favourites of the sisters, and of HEART's fan base, but they had somewhat languished. "Those songs may have fallen through the cracks, in a way, because of where radio was at the time when they were first released," Ann Wilson says. "Rediscovering those songs, I found ways they emotionally still speak to me." Two songs are from "Passionworks", two from "Private Audition", and two are from "Bebe Le Strange"."Beautiful Broken"'s title track had been a bonus song off "Fanatic", HEART's last album, but this version is essentially an entirely new song with barnburner vocals-and even some lyrics-added by METALLICA's James Hetfield. "It blows the previous version out of the water," says Nancy. "James just took the song on, and what he added was perfect with a bite and a rock accent.""Beautiful Broken" was co-produced by Nancy Wilson with HEART's bassist Dan Rothchild. Rothchild had previously produced BETTER THAN EZRA's platinum-selling "Deluxe", but he also comes from rock royalty: his father was legendary DOORS producer Paul Rothchild. "Beautiful Broken" was recorded at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, the same studio the DOORS cut their best work. "There were eerie echoes in the hallway," Nancy says.Rothchild said his goal was to capture the human feel of Heart live in the studio. "On these classics, some of which had suffered from eighties-era over-editing-production-curse, we stripped the paint off and found the beauty underneath," he says. For Ann, the album allowed her to revisit, and re-sing, songs she felt "never reached their full development." For Nancy, the lyrical HEART came alive: "I felt these songs were poetic pieces that were lost in translation with the sounds of the eighties, which was harder and more digital. We wanted to drape them in velvet, and make them shine."One example of is "City's Burnin'", originally on the 1982 album "Private Audition". "The first time we recorded that was in 1981," says Ann, "and it was in a key that was a bit 'show-offy,' and sped-up. On 'Beautiful Broken', we put the key in the right place, and the song really bore fruit."Nancy Wilson sings one of three new songs, "Two". The song had a different genesis than many HEART classics, as Wilson first heard it on a demo made for a television show her husband Geoff was working on. She reached out to the song's writer — R&B sensation Ne-Yo — and asked if he'd consider giving her the song. "I went to work begging for the song," she says. "Ne-Yo said, 'sure.' It ends up he's a HEART fan. He may still release his own version at some point, but to me the song feels like mine now.One of the unique aspects to "Beautiful Broken" is the string arrangements on four songs done by legendary arranger Paul Buckmaster. Buckmaster's resume includes work with THE ROLLING STONES and Elton John ("Levon"). "We were talking about how we wanted 'Paul Buckmaster-type' strings at one point," Nancy said. "So then we decided to call Paul himself."Buckmaster's work on "Sweet Darlin'" is, in particular, a standout, but only because the strings highlight Ann's powerful vocals. Ann had always wanted another shot at "Sweet Darlin'" so it was an ideal choice for "Beautiful Broken". "To me the original sounded somehow incomplete," Ann says. This version, with Buckmaster's strings, finishes the song properly, but it also showcases how Ann's voice has remained strong over the decades.Ann and Nancy Wilson formed HEART when the idea of two women leading a rock band was still groundbreaking. From the moment 1976's "Dreamboat Annie" was released, they became stars. With hits like "Magic Man", "Crazy On You", "Barracuda", "Alone", "What About Love" and "These Dreams", the band became one of the biggest hit-makers in the seventies and eighties. In 2012, their memoir "Kicking & Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul and Rock & Roll". became a New York Times bestseller, and in 2013 they were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. They have sold more records than any sister act in the history of popular music, but they've done so keeping their vision - that women can both rock and put forth emotional intimacy — central to their sound."Beautiful Broken" follows in that tradition, an album with pure rock power on the title track, but also tender sexual yearning on "Language Of Love". It's a contrast that has always been the essence of HEART. "We still make records like we always have, and they are always impossibly romantic, because Ann is always an impossibly romantic singer," Nancy says. "In a world where there is less poetic lyric writing, we've always tried to plant a flag for poetry."That may seem "broken" in a way, in a world of machine-created pop music, but it is also certainly a beautiful vision. This year HEART will bring that vision to half a million fans during their summer concert tour, and "Beautiful Broken" extends that relationship with radio-ready songs, and deep album cuts.

With Top 10 albums on the Billboard Album Chart in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2010s, Heart is among the most commercially enduring hard rock bands in history. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.

Album:

HEART are releasing today the album "Live In Atlantic City", a performance that first aired on VH1 Decades Rock Live back in 2006 finally sees its release on LP / CD / DVD / BluRay - newly mixed and remastered."Live In Atlantic City" pays tribute to, and celebrate, the band’s legacy with the help of a wide range of renowned artists. The 14-track set features guest appearances from a raft of musicians, including country music star Carrie Underwood, Jane’s Addiction founding member and former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Dave Navarro, singer-songwriter Gretchen Wilson and Canadian-American singer-songwriter and composer Rufus Wainwright. An exceptional highlight of the show furthermore entails the return of renowned grunge rockers Alice In Chains with Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan joining his friends on stage. Each guest artist had the chance to perform two or three songs together with the band, for instance Heart’s “Crazy On You”, with Dave Navarro delivering a hot guitar work, or Alice In Chains’ “Rooster” done into a more bluesy fashion.A joined performance featuring all of the guest artists for “Barracuda” rounded up the strong show, which will now finally be released on audio as well as visual formats for the world to enjoy.Heart have been on hiatus since Ann Wilson’s husband Dean Wetter was handed a suspended sentence for assaulting sister Nancy’s twin sons in 2016, with Nancy going on to work on her Roadcase Royale project and Ann launching a solo career. However, the sisters’ relationship appears to be back on track, with Nancy reporting earlier this month that the pair were back on speaking terms. She also hinted that a possible reunion tour could take place as early as next spring."Live In Atlantic City" is a strong Heart album / release, finely mixed with a clear output sound, and very entertaining.
