Bio:

Band founded in 2016.From three-plus decades as Motörhead’s axeman to being voted number 20 in the pole of top 100 Welsh Heroes (comfortably beating JPR Williams, Roald Dahl and Sir Anthony Hopkins) to covering a Norweigian promoter in squirty cheese, Pontypridd-born Campbell continues to live life to the fullest with guitar in hand and humour intact.Growing up admiring the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Tony Iommi and Jimmy Page, Campbell was playing professionally at the age of 13 with cabaret band Contrast on the Welsh club circuit. He bought his first Les Paul in 1973, and only 5 years later (in 1978!) he formed popular heavy metal indie band Persian Risk. Spending several years gigging with Risk, in February 1984 Campbell auditioned for the vacant guitar slot in popular beat group Motörhead. He ended up sharing guitar duties with fellow auditionee (and partner-in-cheap-laughs) Michael Würzel Burston. In a 32 year Motörcareer which spanned three drummers, the departure of Würzel and the appearance of a horse onstage, Campbell was a major creative force and identity for the legendary rockers, selling millions of albums, filling dozens of passports and finding fun and games wherever he went. With 16 studio albums under his belt, Campbell has co-written some of Motörhead’s most-loved songs, including “Orgasmatron”, “Going To Brazil” and “Rock Out”. In fact, since joining the band, Campbell has co-written 90% of Motörhead’s studio output. He has also enjoyed various accolades, including 4 Grammy nominations and one Grammy win (in 2005), two Golden God awards from Metal Hammer magazine, a Kerrang! award, an official proclamation from the City of Los Angeles in August 2015, and a grand total of 16 speeding fines. Bear in mind that Phil is also El Presedente of the Campbell Comedy Corporation.Phil Campbell & The Bastard Sons, featuring Campbell alongside his three sons Todd (guitar), Dane (drums), Tyla (bass) and complemented by vocalist Neil Starr have stepped up their touring activities in 2016 and performed a blinder at Europe’s oldest, most prestigious metal festival, Wacken on August 3rd. Phil Campbell & The Bastard Sons have just completed work on a self titled EP, which will be released in November 2016 by UDR Records.

Album:

Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons are about to fly a mighty Welsh-born rock’n’roll flag in your direction! The legendary Motörhead guitarist, Phil Campbell, has teamed up with his sons Todd, Dane and Tyla, plus vocalist Neil Starr, to record their debut self-titled 5-track EP. Produced by Todd Campbell at their own Stompbox Studios in Wales, UK, and mixed by Motörhead’s producer Cameron Webb, Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons loudly shoves you head-first into its raw, gritty, classic and instantly-accessible rock’n’roll charms. Whether it’s the speedy biker-charged refrain of “No Turning Back”, the crunchy catchy jump of “Big Mouth” or the beautiful, yet bombastic, balladry of “Life In Space”, Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons brings uniquely organic life and verve to every last riff and stomp, with Starr’s sensational vocals ensuring this EP will be the surprise of the 2016 rock’n’roll release calendar.

Album:

Much like James Bond and Doctor Who, there’s a line-up of Motörhead which was your Motörhead. For me, it was Mikkey Dee and Phil Campbell (and a grizzled, mutton-chopped man in black). Having properly gotten into Motörhead during their purple patch with Cameron Webb at the mixing desk, The Wörld is Yours was my Ace of Spades. Phil Campbell has featured on some of my favourite Motörhead songs and had he packed his gear up and not given the world another song, it would have been a loss for music.Thankfully, Campbell has rounded up his sons (Todd, Dane and Tyla – guitar, drums and bass, respectively) and Neil Starr (vocals) to continue the hard rock goodness with The Age of Absurdity. It’s not some ham-fisted attempt to continue Motörhead’s legacy nor is it a complete departure. Instead, it’s Campbell having fun and doing what he does best as well as flexing his muscles. There’s variation to the music but at the heart of it all, it’s still unmistakably Phil Campbell.Hard, dirty riffs are rightly front and centre which squeal and crunch in only the way Phil Campbell can deliver them and make their presence right from the start with “Ringleader”. With a second guitar in the mix, Campbell Sr trades licks with Todd who proves he can keep up with dad. It’s clear he’s been an influence on him musically as he provides his own chunky riffs to wrap around them. Meanwhile, Tyla’s bass lines are so heavy, they come dangerously close to climbing out of the speakers and bashing your head in.Following it up is “Freak Show” to make an excellent one-two punch of an opener and proves Campbell and his Bastard Sons aren’t messing around. With its chunky bluesy opening riff, it’s not dissimilar to AC/DC’s “Girls Got Rhythm”, and while it does sound like the Highway to Hell number on steroids, you can still picture a denim-clad Kirriemuir man belting this out as he gargles gravel. “Skin and Bones” goes in the complete opposite direction and with its chugging riff and Dane’s bombastic drums, sounds like something you’d hear from a band inspired by today’s modern day titans like Alter Bridge, Shinedown, Black Stone Cherry, etc.Meanwhile, “Dark Days” doubles down on the blues vibe becoming far more sludgy and injecting it with a healthy dose of Southern sensibility to give a Clutch vibe. Actually, that’d be one hell of a tour, wouldn’t it? “Dropping the Needle” and “Step into the Fire” revert the album back to the normal service established with the opening two tracks and between the pair of them are probably the best representations of the band’s sound with their no-nonsense hard rock sound. “High Rule” acts as the title track as it puts politicians under the microscope with its hook of “Welcome to a new part of history – the age of absurdity” and while it may not be quite as poetic as Lemmy ever managed, you can imagine it prompting a wry grin from him.Featuring as a bonus song is “Silver Machine”. Yes, that one you’re thinking of – which is essentially where it all started for Lemmy. The Hawkwind classic (and ironically their most successful single) has been reworked to sound like it was a Motörhead song and even features Dave Brock lending his guitar and vocal talents to the track. Whilst it may not feature on this review copy, it was played on tour with Airbourne and became a completely new beast in this form and one of the highlights in a set full of great songs.I’ve been looking forward to this album for quite some time now and I promised I wouldn’t mention Motörhead and instead judge the album on its own merits. But it became glaringly obvious that would be impossible. This album manages to successfully stand on its own two feet and is good enough that I’d want to find more material from Phil Campbell if I was unaware of his past efforts. Miraculously, by trying not to be a re-hash of Motörhead and experimenting with styles, Campbell and his sons have not only managed to fill the void left behind but have also made something brand new. We may only be at Blue Monday and a wealth of great albums on the horizon but we may already have a contender for the best album of 2018.

Album:

There is not much a band can do when there is no touring, especially if you consider that this situation has gone for longer than everyone was expecting to (or should I say hoping for). Most of the musicians who have been following the album release/touring cycle must have been feeling in their bones this gap in their life. The question is what to do; wait until normality has been restored, or try to make the best out of it. For the latter, a band has to be able to remain inspired and hungry to create new music and give the fans something to hold on. Oh yeah, for many, music is a lifeline, and if you think about it, is a way to keep our community alive and ready to fill the venues whenever this happens. PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS is a band that was not meant to be a studio act, simply because the MOTÖRHEAD gene is a dominant one, and therefore needs to be onstage. Phil Campbell’s extended family, with Neil Starr being the “adopted son”, entered the studio and hammered “We’re The Bastards” that should not be a surprise that lives and breathes to be played live. The Phil-trademark guitar rhythm has the Rock ’n’ Roll groove we have learned to love from his six-string. Neil starts singing the title track, and the lyrics “Music is medicine, music is therapy” will immediately put a smile on your face and a grin of agreement. That’s right, fellow Rock ‘n’ Rollers; music is our medicine, and maybe we are the bastards, as the title track states. This one is an ode to what this music is all about and how it brings everyone together, not giving a flying shit where you come from, or what the color of your skin is. That’s right; we are part of the crew; and of course there is a connection with what Lemmy was saying in “(We Are) The RoadCrew”. It should not be a surprise that PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS share the same mentality with MOTÖRHEAD but not in a “want to sound like that” way. In fact, in this album, the band has been expanding its sound, but more about this later, because the bass doodle in “Son Of A Gun” will hit all the right spots, and you will be looking for a cold one to match the fast riff-driven rhythm and the killer guitar fills. You should pay attention to the lyrics too, because Neil has practically taken a snapshot of what’s going on around us in these “always streaming” days. The groovier “Promises Are Poison” and especially “Born To Roam” carry an almost American Hard Rock breeze that I have to say fits the album’s Rock ‘n’ Roll like maple syrup on pancakes. In case you might think that Phil and Co. have decided to take the band on the other side of the Atlantic, you should think again, because songs like “Animals” (oh yeah, with that rhythm guitar) or the mid-tempo “Keep Your Jacket On” will put your mind at ease and your head into headbanging mode. The sound production is spot-on, simply because it feels like you are in the front row watching the band storming the setlist at maximum volume. Listen how the guitar starts on “Riding Straight To Hell” or the amp feed on the Punk-esque “Destroyed” set the mood for the next two minutes-long of adrenaline rush. Is there some MOTÖRHEAD in there too? You bet there is, and it’s topped off by the backing vocals that will invite you to raise the middle finger to whom this may concern [sic] as you sing-along “don’t wanna listen to a word you say, we say fuck you”. If this isn’t therapeutic to sing out loud, I dunno what is... And it ties with what I was saying about music being a powerful lifeline. “Waves” closes the album after six and a half minutes, and once the Rock ‘n’ Roll dust has settle, you will notice how much artistic room this band has to grow and evolve. This bass-driven song and the subtle orchestration bring along some sweet nostalgia (I have no better words to describe this) and, in a way, gives you some time to cool off after “Destroyed”. The guitar leads add another layer to make this mid-tempo and emotional-charged song that goes heavier during its climax-drum-kick ending. In lieu of concerts, PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS took all the bottled-up frustration and energy and put together an album that is a promise of how things will go down once this situation has become past news. Bands need this as much as we do and therefore buying new music is the best way to keep the amps plugged in, until we meet again inside venues and in festivals’ grounds.

Album:

British rockers PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS, led by former Motorhead guitarist Philip Anthony Campbell have released a brand new live album titled ”Live In The North”. Recorded in 2021 during a particularly intense show at The Independent in Sunderland, UK, ”Live In The North” is the first recording to feature the band’s new vocalist Joel Peters. It serves as a document of their live expertise ahead of their upcoming UK tour supporting Black Star Riders and Michael Monroe. There’s a couple of things there. First, this is the first ever PCABS live album, second, in addition to their own stuff (which is superb) there’s a liberal sprinkling of Motorhead too. And that’s never, ever going to be a problem.“Live In The North” was recorded in Sunderland on the tour they did when gigs resumed in 2021. It opens with “We’re The Bastards”, their anthem. They are. And they are really, really good. New single “Bite My Tongue” casts a critical eye on this decade and concludes there’s not much you can do with stupidity, except “Rock Out”, I guess. That’s the first Motorhead tune and it takes you back to every Autumn, when we’d go and worship. They were shows like no other and credit to PCATBS for keeping the flame alive in such a fashion, while writing their own songs that don’t copy them much at at all.Indeed, if this live album does one thing, then let it recognise just how good these cuts are. The Orange Goblin flavoured “Spiders” for one, “High Rule” for another. It reasons we live in an “age of absurdity”. It’s got worse since this was written too.Another from their 2018 record, “Ringleader” has more of a flavour of the job Phil Campbell used to do, but its interesting to hear them sung by Peters. He’d stood out as a member of Bootyard Bandits and he’s relishing the chance to front this band. They’ve got a groove, have the Bastard Sons. “Dark Days” is full of it, and if “Big Mouth” swaps that for pure, visceral energy, then either suits them.It also helps that you’ve got a clutch of legendary songs to play, but that neglects to mention “These Old Boots” from Campbell snr’s solo record. A standout even here, but lets be honest here. There’s “Ace Of Spades”, there’s “Going To Brazil” and there’s “Killed By Death” to finish. I am probably not the only person in this world to have it as a top ten song of all time, but we are where we are and its still genius. And it still makes me think of Lemmy every single time.Of course too, this was a tour tinged with tragedy and “….Hell” is poignantly dedicated to Tom from Wolfjaw, who were originally slated to support before he tragically died.Phil Campbell And The Bastard Sons have rock n roll in their DNA, of course they do, but they are a quite marvelous band in their own right. “Live In The North” underlines that for anyone still unaware.

Album:

Some people just don’t need no introduction. And this fine gentleman is high on top of that list: PHIL CAMPBELL, Welsh rock titan, Motörhead guitarist for more than 30 years until the bitter end. Now in 2019, Campbell releases his first solo album ‘Old Lions Still Roar‘ coming armed with an arsenal of fierce riffing, anthemic hooks, pumping energy and no-holds-barred hard rocking fuel.Featuring an array of star guests including Alice Cooper, Rob Halford, Dee Snider, Mick Mars and more, on ‘Old Lions Still Roar’ Campbell underlines his reputation as one of classic rock’s keenest preservers.Since the end of Motorhead drummer Mikkey Dee has found a home with the Scorpions and guitarist Phil Campbell has been forging ahead with his band the Bastard Sons. Now Campbell has decided to release a solo album and as you’d expect from a musician with many years in the music business, he can call on a large list of guest vocalists including Dee Snider, Rob Halford and Alice Cooper.Opening with ‘Rocking Chair’, featuring Leon Stanford (The People The Poet) on vocals, you’re lulled into a false sense of security as this is a laid back, bluesy number. Lovely bit of playing by Campbell on this one. After that it is rock and metal to the fore, as Rob Halford rattles through ‘Straight Up’, whilst Orange Goblin’s Ben Ward adds a nice vocal to boot to the Sabbath air on ‘Faith In Fire’.One of the good things about this album is how the songs fit the vocalist, none more so than ‘Swing It’ which Alice Cooper has great fun with. A great catchy number that has a hint of 80s and 90s vintage Aerosmith.Dee Snider puts in a show stopping performance on ‘These Old Boots’, a wonderful old school rocker with lots of swagger. The we find the remarkable ‘Dead Roses’ featuring Benji Webbe of Skindred who sing here like you’ve never heard him before, it’s a wonderful soulful ballad that sounds incredible.‘Old Lions Still Roar’ is an album that never lets you down, and the deeper you get the more you realize the quality never wavers.Another highlight come with ex-Skin Nev MacDonald on the wonderfully bluesy uplifting tune ‘Left For Dead’ – his voice has lost none of its power and melody, while there’s a Nick Oliveri’s kick ass heavy groove contribution on the stuttering ‘Walk The Talk’.The instrumental ‘Tears From A Glass Eye’ closes the album and Campbell is joined by fellow guitarist Joe Satriani. They play it melodically, none of that widdly widdly solos for these two esteemed chaps. If you never liked Motorhead you better forget that with ‘Old Lions Still Roar’, it’s far from the Lemmy’s band abrasive sound, but a mostly melodic classic rock / traditional hard rock record with tons of emotions to enjoy. An album you can put on to lift the mood and enjoy again & again.

PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS, the band featuring MOTÖRHEAD guitarist Phil Campbell alongside his sons Todd, Dane and Tyla, will release its third album, "Kings Of The Asylum", on September 1 through Nuclear Blast Records. It will be PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS' first studio release to feature singer Joel Peters. To coincide with the announcement, PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS have shared a video for the album's first single, "Schizophrenia", and announced that they will be playing an intimate release show at The Patriot in Crumlin, South Wales on September 7. Tickets go on sale on Friday, June 23 at 9 a.m.Phil comments: "We are thrilled to finally announce that we will be unleashing our brand new album 'Kings Of The Asylum' on September 1st. PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS' latest album, "We're The Bastards", came out in November 2020 via Nuclear Blast.Formed in the aftermath of MOTÖRHEAD's dissolution, following the death of Lemmy Kilmister in December 2015, PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS were always going to draw a crowd at any discerning rock or metal festival. Led by one of the genre's most respected guitarists, the band emerged onto the 2017 touring circuit powered by a huge amount of good will, a smattering of MOTÖRHEAD covers and a handful of new songs that crackled with passion and swagger. Landing themselves a prestigious support slot on GUNS N' ROSES 2017 summer stadium run, the BASTARD SONS hit the ground running.Fast forward to 2020 and, just like everyone else, PHIL CAMPBELL AND THE BASTARD SONS had to cancel a lot of carefully laid plans when the global pandemic descended on us all. But as if to confirm their absolute dedication to blowing people's heads off with thunderous rock 'n' roll, the band refused to cancel plans to record a follow-up to their widely lauded debut. Recorded and engineered during lockdown by guitarist Todd Campbell, the second BASTARD SONS album, "We're The Bastards", was described in a press release as "bigger, better and even more raucously uplifting than its predecessor." In October 2019, Phil Campbell released his first-ever solo record, "Old Lions Still Roar".
