Six years later the whole band has reemerged again and put out three albums in 2006 and 2007 and Here We Are in 2008.Mad Max will be supporting German heavy metal guitarist Axel Rudi Pell during the Circle Of The Oath Tour during April & May in 2012

Album:

Michael Voss is a really busy musician, a self-made man that stands as one of the most hard-working characters in the Traditional Euro-Metal scene, and one of the most prolific as a songwriter. A guitar player, a singer, a producer that is known as the leader of many legendary bands such as CASANOVA / DEMON DRIVE or WOLFPAKK, recently fronting nothing less than MSG and of course as the Lead singer/Lead guitar player for 80’s survivors MAD MAX. The MAD MAX career is spread for over than 30 years with many turmoils, splits, stops and restarts, but now the band is composed by the same line-up of original players, they went in between to play with JADED HEART / CASANOVA / TANNER.”Interceptor” is the name of their latest album, a release that is focused on the Hard Rocking side of MAD MAX and on the most edgy vibes, full-throttle from start to finish with no ballads or mellow songs. The opening track “Save Me” is a good example, of how the sing-along Melody and pure energy can melt in a perfect amalgam fusion of Rock dynamics, easily the best cut. There is something for everyone, sharp riffing, mid tempo and an anthemic chorus from the great Hair Metal book. The remaining tracks are more or less in the same vein, with some fun lyrics inspired by their numerous experiences (“Rock All Your Life” / ”Streets Of Tokyo”) and the now obligatory cover of THE SWEET with their hit , the 1974’s “Turn It Down” a very good habit, if you ask me, as I’m also a big fan of this legendary outfit from England. The faultless production and the vocals are exemplary, it’s the strongest assets of this release, the originality isn’t the priority or the goal, just a good fun and a positive attitude in order to make you roll. The eighth track is a new version, it’s one of their rarer song that appeared as a bonus track in some foreign edition of “Night Of Passion” in 1987, this fresh rendition is heaviest than ever with no keys , just a big fat six-strings-attack in their noble Headbanging tradition.A solid release with all the basic ingredients to rock your night away.

Album:

German rockers Mad Max will release their new album, Thunder, Storm And Passion, via Steamhammer / SPV on August 28th in Europe, and on September 4th in North America. The album comes as a high class digipak and contains 12 re-recorded classics on CD 1 and a bonus CD, Live at Bang Your Head Festival 2014. The complete tracklisting can be found below. It all began in 1982 when the New Wave of Britsish Heavy Metal stormed in from Great Britain all over Europe. This was the starting point for the passionate and young German band from Muenster. Heavy Metal music was the rule, and sending the first demos ever to the recently founded company Roadrunner Records made them get one of their first signings. Mad Max were in good company: Bands like Metallica, King Diamond or Lee Aaron were signed to the label as well. The deal ran over three albums, and suddenly the band started touring intensively with bands as Pretty Maids, Yngwie Malmsteen, Uriah Heep or Stryper and playing the legendary Dynamo Open Air Festival in Eindhoven. Then, in the beginning of the new century, Mad Max signed to SPV and played huge international festivals like Rocklahoma, Wacken, Bang Your Head or Rock Of Ages, followed by two European Tours as support for Axel Rudi Pell.

Album:

Idealism is, as we all know, an inherent character trait that you can neither learn nor unlearn. In other words: you either have it or you don't. Mad Max musicians Michael Voss (vocals, guitar), Jürgen Breforth (guitar), Axel Kruse (drums) and Thomas Bauer (bass) doubtlessly have that unshakable idealism that ensures that the band still delivers optimum performance even after 35 years, without ever giving in to supposed restrictions dictated by the music industry. In the case of the current Mad Max album "35", which reflects musically and thematically the development of the band since it was founded back in the early 80s, there can be no doubt that they still haved lots of strong ideas up their sleeves. What is more: the new album sounds both classic and contemporary, holds lots of surprises in store and - last but not least - pays homage to the four band members' heroes."35" was produced at the Kidroom Studios in Greven, the drums were recorded under the direction of Rolf Munkes (Crematory, Phantom 5) at his Empire Studios in Bensheim near Frankfurt and the album was mastered at CS Mastering in Bratislava by Christoph Stickel (Michael Schenker Fest), so the production parameters live up to the album's high compositional standard.

Album:

For a band who’ve been cranking out some slick-sounding melodic hard rock while packing the arenas in their native Germany and throughout the thunderdome of the Old Continent for close to 40 years, MAD MAX are only slightly known over here amongst a few of their North American hard rock cohorts. With a deeply-ingrained melodic hard rock sound driven by haunting guitar riffs, catchy vocals and a rhythm section with an infallible timing, the band draw many tonal similarities to bands such as PRETTY MAIDS and PINK CREAM 69 to name a few of their EU AOR peers here. And while much of their lack of intercontinental success had been due to a 12-year hiatus between the release of 1987’s Night Of Passion and their 1999 comeback album Never Say Never, the quartet – comprised of Michael Voss (lead vocals, lead guitars), Jürgen Breforth (rhythm guitars), Thomas “Hutch” Bauer (bass, vocals) and Axel Kruse (drums) – have coursed their 20-year comeback with one of their musically strongest albums to date with their 13th studio album Stormchild Rising.Granted, while MAD MAX are a relatively new band to many of us both reading and having written this review, Stormchild Rising is definitely an album that harkens back to the band’s early raw melodic sound, paying its homage to the bygone era of the 80’s while successfully emerging as a well-rounded album in its own right. Like its predecessor albums and indeed the whole contour and mission statement of the band itself, Stormchild Rising isn’t so much looking to push musical boundaries further to reach a broader audience as it is in maintaining the current loyal audience that it already has, and given that the album pays its tribute to MAD MAX’s slightly similarly-titled 1985 album Stormchild, named after the band’s warrior character known for fighting on the side of everything good, it was only fitting that in these coronavirus times that a revival came full circle here. “On our last tour we talked to fans from lots of different countries every night and found out that they don’t want us to experiment, they want to hear exactly the kind of songs that MAD MAX have been known for since 1981,” alluded Jürgen Breforth on the band’s last jaunt supporting 2018’s Thirty 5. And while experimentation has been beneficial in helping a band foster and grow, so has loyalty to the fans that have given the band an audience in the first place. The album’s first single “Hurricaned” is proof of this with its Blackmore-inspired opening riff as it takes on a life of its own as a modern-day RAINBOW track on steroids, even roping in its current frontman Ronnie Romero (whom the band had toured with) to share vocals with Michael Voss. It’s such an endearing musical homage to RAINBOW that you almost forget that it’s also a socio-critical message about what Breforth describes as “a veritable hurricane of media overkill”.Other surprise collaborations throughout the album include a mesmerizing rendition of “The Blues Ain’t No Stranger” which sees the band experimenting with more rustic slow blues overtones and a haunting guitar solo by STRYPER’s Oz Fox (who’d also toured with MAD MAX during the 80’s) and a soaring cover of ROUGH CUTT’s “Take Her” featuring shared vocals by Paul Shortino himself. And closing out the album is an alternate single edit of the Hysteria-era DEF LEPPARD-sounding “Ladies And Gentlemen” whose German version features a neat collaboration with children’s song star Detlev Jöcker and students of a German music school who sing their rendition of the chorus in German. For those of us who truly take MAD MAX’s ethos of straightforward no-nonsense reliable hard rock to heart, the aforementioned “Hurricaned”, “The Blues Ain’t No Stranger” and “Take Her” alongside the power-friendly “Talk To The Moon”, “Kingdom Fall”, “Mindhunter”, “Gemini”, “Rain Rain”, “Busted” and the original version of “Ladies And Gentlemen” are the songs in particular that continue to meet that criteria and round off the album nicely. So, while MAD MAX’s nearly 40-year career hasn’t immediately sprogged maddening heights of worldwide success, they’ve otherwise maintained the support of their familiar fans and even grown their family thanks to the high-speed energy and resurgence of Stormchild Rising. Guess Tina Turner was wrong about us needing another set of heroes after all.

Album:

Of the many iconic characters to rise to prominence in the 1980s and be adopted by the metal world, few could hold a candle to the cynical vagabond and driver of The Interceptor that would come to be referred to as The Road Warrior. Though technically a persona that was born in the late 70s via the original film, said piece of post-apocalyptic cinema was definitely a forward-looking story that would come to shape the approaching decade's obsession with a future dystopian wasteland from which humanity would battle to rise again to former greatness. Teutonic metallic rockers right from the city of Munster (itself a past location of a dystopian event during the height of the Protestant Reformation) might seem a less than obvious outfit to go by the name Mad Max given the more extreme bands that would come to dominate the scene in the latter half of the decade, but by the standards of 1982, this band weren't necessarily slouches at delivering up the metallic thunder, albeit tempered with a fair bit of melodic detailing that would make it less dangerous sounding than the likes of Venom and Satan. At first glance, this fold's debut LP Heavy Metal may come off as a bit schizophrenic, largely owning to a lack of commitment to a particular set of influences. On one hand, Andreas Baesler's gritty, mid-ranged snarl comes off as a fairly typical affair for a band that was taking its cues from the NWOBHM, sounding a lot like Rob Halford minus the banshee wails and plus a tad bit more rasp. Likewise, the dominant influence upon the musical foundation of this band's formula would be that of Judas Priest's early 80s material, leaning a bit more towards the rock-based and less biting character of Point Of Entry, but with occasional elements of British Steel. Then again, there are frequent deviations from this formula to a bit more of an older, 70s hard rock sound that has traces of southern blues rock such as the verse riff of "No Remedies" (a dead-ringer for 38 Special's "Hold On Loosely"), and even some off-kilter early doom metal moments (see the intro to "Shake Some Action", blatant "Black Sabbath" homage). When put together, it makes for an interesting, albeit uneven total package. That all being said, song for song, this is a solid experience that manages to cover most of the obligatory bases while also showcasing some occasional forward-looking moments. Conventional rock anthems like the galloping romp "Free Will" and the more shuffling groove machine "Can't Live Without You" exemplify most of this album's character and take about as many cues from Kiss as they do Saxon, but there is definitely a more overtly metallic character to the riff assault. Likewise, the flashy lead guitar work of Wilfried Schneider has some fairly blatant similarities to the handiwork of Diamond Head's Brian Tatler, and proves to be the most distinctive element of this album as a whole. Generally things seesaw between being AOR fodder and being moderately pummeling, but things take on a far more powerful character towards the end when the riff-happy galloping speeder "Barbarians" hits the speakers. The coup de grace, however, is the closing semi-ballad "Wheel Of Fortune", which has sort of a dreary "Beyond The Realms Of Death" character to it, but also lays down a truly wicked set of semi-thrashing riffs once the tempo kicks up just prior to the solo.Though definitely not of the same caliber as a number of consequential early 80s offerings, this album definitely has some moments that would play very well to the ears of current trustees of the present traditional heavy metal revival. In similar fashion to their similarly obscure and fellow Teutonic contemporaries Darxon, Mad Max started on a bit more of an uneven, immature footing that blends the grittier side of the NWOBHM with a more AOR-friendly rock style that has fairly mixed results. While the songwriting is largely on point, the ebb and flow of the whole LP is a tad uneven and Baesler's vocals prove to be a bit lackluster, which is likely indicative of why he didn't stick around long after this album and exited the scene entirely. Subsequent efforts would see a more refined sound that incorporates more of a melodic metal approach, all the while still maintaining the punch and pizzazz of the genre's roots. This may not a genre-defining masterpiece after the mode of British Steel or Strong Arm Of The Law, but it does a decent job of paying tribute to them while avoiding being an overt carbon copy.

Bio:

MAD MAX is a Münster melodic Hard Rock outfit debuted with a line-up of vocalist Andreas Baesler, guitarists Wilfred Schneider and Jürgen Breforth, bassist Thomas Hoffman and drummer Uwe Starck, cutting a self-financed, eponymous album for issue in 1982. This offering was subsequently re-issued via Roof Music in 1983. The band signed to Roadrunner Records and new singer Michael Voss, then just nineten years old, featured on the second album ‘Rollin’ Thunder’, released in October 1984. ‘Rollin’ Thunder’ was also granted a valuable US release on the Metal Blade label. The band then replaced Hoffmann with new bassist Jürgen Sander. MAD MAX evolved further when both Schneider and Starck vacated their positions to join fellow Münster Heavy Metal band Carrie. 1985’s ‘Stormchild’ album witnessed new recruits being drafted in the form of bassist Roland Bergmann, drummer Axel Kruse and guitarist Christopher Wegmann. The single ‘Fox On The Run’, from 1986, was a cover of the Sweet classic.MAD MAX guitarist Chris Gerhard (‘Angel’) Schliefer was eventually to join SINNER for their ‘Comin’ Out Fighting’ album in 1986 and has also enjoyed stints in the ranks of Pretty Maids, Bonfire and the rejuvenated Sabu. Drummer Axel Kruse currently plays with German Melodic Rock outfit Jaded Heart.Their final Roadrunner album release, the Dirk Steffens produced ‘Night Of Passion’, arrived in 1987.Mad Max debuted in 1982 with their self-titled album and managed to gain a lot of success in Europe and Japan in the mid-80's before fading away in 1989. Michael Voss and Jürgen Breforth reunited and put out a comeback album in 1999. Six years later the whole band has reemerged again and put out three albums in 2006 and 2007 and Here We Are in 2008.Mad Max will be supporting German heavy metal guitarist Axel Rudi Pell during the Circle Of The Oath Tour during April & May in 2012

Album:

It all began in the year 1982 when the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal stormed in from Great Britain all over Europe. This was the starting point for Mad Max founder and guitar player Juergen Breforth to make his musical dreams come true. Mad Max was born and now 2022, after 15 albums and concerts all around the world, Mad Max is celebrating its 40th anniversary. "Wings Of Time" is Juergen's vision of Mad Max. With Julian Rolinger on lead vocals, Mad Max captures perfectly the style and vibe of their 80s roots, but also taking the Mad Max sound way further. The first single "Too Hot To Handle" is a heavy melodic rocker with a magic groove. Radio DJs who already heard the song couldn't believe that this band is from Germany. They thought it must be a newcomer from the USA and not a band from Germany with a history of 40 years. Check out "Best Part Of Me" which was inspired by the wonderful spirit of Jimi Jamison from Survivor and you know exactly what the radio DJs are talking about. With "Wings Of Time" you will discover the new Mad Max, but there are also lots of classic guitar riffs and melodies for all the true and loyal fans who kept the Mad Max spirit alive for 40 years.

Album:

Second full-length album.Much like their cinematic namesake, the Munster-born quintet of early 80s metal rockers dubbed Mad Max hit the vibrant scene with a sound about as rustic and primitive as they come. Though by no means was their 1982 eponymous debut a poor offering, but compared to the elites of the NWOBHM and the immediate predecessors that were its influence, it ended up wanting in some respects, most notably the limited and occasional rough vocal abilities of original front man Andreas Baesler. However, despite some noteworthy flaws, this Teutonic fold of upstarts would catch the attention of Roadrunner Records, which when combined with a couple of significant lineup changes would see a revamped and ultimately superior sound emerge by the time 1984 rolled in. The resulting sophomore studio resurgence, aptly titled Rollin' Thunder, would see a brilliant blend of kinetic speed metal elements and melodic rock swagger take centerstage, spearheaded by the entrance of glorious high-ranged wailer and guitarist Michael Voss. The shift in stylistic demeanor that has taken hold here is almost jarring, to the point that this scarcely sounds like the same band. From the opening chugs of the mid-paced anthem and opener "Fly, Fly Away" it becomes clear that the sonic flavor of this band has become far more metallic, with a busy assortment of riffs that scream Iron Maiden influence about as blatantly as Bruce Dickinson's signature air raid screams, with a correspondingly infectious dueling lead guitar assault. In a manner similar to Stormwitch's concurrent offerings, several of these songs predict the upcoming merger that the German speed metal sound would make with power metal, most notably faster-paced melodic cruisers such as "Evil Message" and the high octane cruiser "Shout And Cry", the former featuring a triumphant chorus section that likely influenced Chroming Rose, while the latter could almost have been an addition to Riot's Thundersteel. Even when things are kept at a more moderate pace on rocking groove machines like "Losing You" and "Stranger", the blend of virtuosic guitar showmanship and crunchy riff work provides a needed metallic, Judas Priest-like edge to what would otherwise be pure AOR fodder with a saccharine-steeped vocal performance out of Voss.In essence, the first two-thirds of this album are an exercise in brilliantly blended metallic thunder with a softer, listener-friendly rocking gloss, but even when things start to tapper off as high-flying fun gives way to more reserved and predictable material the vibe of 80s enthusiasm endures. The first hint of things dying down comes in with the more down-tempo march of the title song "Rollin' Thunder", which has a bit more of a mid-80s arena rock shtick going, though interestingly it proves to be one of Voss' more gritty performances and newly recruited Jürgen Sander gets a bit of time in the sun. Probably the greatest flaw of this album is that the bass rides a bit lower in the mix than it should, but when it manages to punch though, it shows some occasional flourishes beyond the Ian Hill approach. In similar fashion, the mid-paced coaster "Riding Through The Night" plays it pretty safe, though the principle/verse riff has a nice galloping edge to it and the shred breaks put forth by Wilfried Schneider and Jürgen Breforth stand out nicely. That's sort of the odd charm of this album, the guitar work is so outlandishly fancy that it actually surpasses the most flamboyant displays out of Tipton and Downing prior to 1988, to the point where even the extremely downplayed ballad and closer "Thoughts Of A Dying Man" finds itself morphing into an extended jam session.Fully nailing down whether this album is a raucous metallic forerunner to Helloween or a heavier version of the ascendant AOR-craze of the mid-80s is a tough call, as it finds itself vacillating between the two even during its softer moments. As such, it will probably hold the greatest appeal to those who enjoyed the more anthem-crazed mid-80s material put out by the likes of Leatherwolf, Pretty Maids and Luv Hunter, though it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to see fans of Stormwitch and 1985-86 Accept liking much of what happens on here. In many respects, the addition of Michael Voss into the fold is what makes this album work, but ultimately it's a team effort and all of the instrumentalists laying the groundwork for him prove competent enough to trade blows with every heavy-hitter of the 80s. Further lineup changes would continue to dog this dark horse of the Teutonic metal scene throughout the 80s and would see them sitting out nearly all of the following decade, but in this particular case the instability has led to the first in a series of superior ventures, and those new to Mad Max would do well to begin with this energy-infused mid-80s diamond.

Album:

Mad Max debuted on the German metal scene in 1982, delivering a brilliant combination of hard rock and heavy metal. Throughout the years the band managed to record eight full-length albums and one EP, with each release proving their amazing musical skills. This exclusive re-release of Stormchild brings back one of the most underrated German rock legends ever to walk the face of this planet…Mad Max released their third LP – Stormchild – in 1985, showcasing a great musical progression. The album received great reviews in the British music press (especially in Kerrang!) and soon the band decided to organize a small tour across the UK. Unfortunately, guitarist Christoph Wegman was not able to attend the concerts, so he was temporarily replaced by Angel Schleifer. The tour turned out to be a great success, ending with a sold-out show in London’s Marquee Club. After that, Mad Max toured Europe with such artists as Pretty Maids, Stryper and again Yngwie Malmsteen’s Rising Force, in the meantime preparing the material for their next album. Throughout their long and fruitful career, Mad Max had their ups and downs, but always remained true to their original, hard rockin’ sound, making each of their releases truly unforgettable. 2009 re-issue in digipack limited to 2000 copies with one bonus track.

Album:

Third album plus Maxi single "Love On The Run" (1986) with 3 tracks. This album is the last of the 80’s Mad Max (and likely the last of anything worthwhile getting from them? I dunno) and though still kicking a lot of ass, it is softer and more melodic than albums like their strong sophomore effort, the very much metal ‘Rollin’ Thunder’ that marked a radical departure from their lame first effort. By this stage, both bass and drums duties had been handed over since the recording of said second album, and the band was in quite a bit of turmoil. Uwe Starck had long since been fired on drums, and his successor, Axel Kruse steps in here for his second album behind the kit. All these lineup changes took their toll (even in the midst of several very strong albums), and Roadrunner could put up with it no longer with these stresses. Following the releases of this album, they axed the band, which lead to their demise, until re-uniting in the late 80’s from what I understand. This is a strong album – more melodic and US AOR influenced than the early works, but still retaining plenty of metal, and dazzling guitar efforts, as well as the strong impassioned vocals of Voss, whose voice and delivery are really a signature of the outfit, even though he came in at album # 2. Some tracks are still solidly metal, like the dark and ominous ‘R.I.P.’ with a guitar lead tone that’s very passionate, moody and beautiful, leading into the harmonic-infused galloping cruncher ‘Drive Through the Sky’. Tracks like ‘Wild and Seventeen’ are pure pop-metal anthem domination. This song is awesome; very much sitting in that melodic heavy metal category, this one sounds very akin to a mid paced track from the early Dokken albums, and features a strong hook in Voss’ chorus delivery. It’s quality, catchy efforts like this that prove how awesome 80’s pop metal can be, and pisses all over most of the wannabe US bands from the same period. The opener has the same general feel about it; big hooks, power melodies, energy, enthusiasm, with an almost poppish vibe. This is a great album and strong representation of the subgenre. Good bands like this are what people don’t know of or consider when they make statements saying all this type of stuff is shitty and without merit. Sure, things might get a bit too formulaic and saccharin in tracks like ‘Hearts on Fire’ which sounds like Firehouse, but a good majority of the songs have more metal orientated guitar feels, even if the production on the album washes stuff out, in typical commercial fashion. This is one of the better 3 albums from this great, and forgotten act, along with ‘Rollin Thunder’ and it’s successor. If you’re a fan of Dokken, or you like 80’s glam in terms of Firehouse etc, or you like the power melody sorta stuff like Sound Barrier, Luv Hunter, Horizon, Europe, this comes strongly recommended. ‘Love Loaded’ and ‘Wild and Seventeen’ are definite highlights, and watch out for solid guitar performances throughout; passionate leads that sound like something from Vinnie Moore. Very good stuff here, and criminally overlooked.
