Bio:

There could hardly be a better symbol of Mönchengladbach rock act Motorjesus’ ambitions than the cover of their latest album, Wheels Of Purgatory, due out on 10 December 2010 on Drakkar/Sony: the Son of God with a fag in the corner of his mouth, riding a black Pontiac V8, bolting straight from hell on his way to new adventures. “We preach rock’n’roll,” vocalist Chris ‘Howling’ Birx explains, delivering this solemn statement with wink, just like the album’s inspired artwork isn’t to be taken entirely seriously. That this obvious sense of humour also includes verve and fun, wildness and spiritedness, but first and foremost a lot of energy and a talent for haunting compositions becomes as obvious on this masterpiece as it did on the heavy rock albums Dirty Pounding Gasoline (2004, released under the name of The Shitheadz), which was celebrated by the press and extremely popular with the metal community, and Deathrider (2006), both of them earning the band countless live appearances: from youth clubs to concert venues, alongside heroes great and small, from Motörhead to Anthrax, from Volbeat to Misfits, from Prong to Hatesphere, from President Evil to A.O.K. And now there’s their latest album, Wheels of Purgatory – Motorjesus are really letting it rip again! It’s their extremely successful mix of traditional hard rock, down-to-earth metal, sprinklings of rock’n’roll and occasional 90s grunge and stoner rock elements which make Motorjesus stand out. A mix which comes across more homogenously and conclusively in 2010 than ever before. “I feel that Wheels Of Purgatory sounds better overall than its predecessor,” Birx reckons. “Deathrider featured a number of very good songs, but to us, the album also had its weak spots. This time around, the record really gets down to business from the first to the very last note. It’s much more coherent, which is probably also due to the fact that we’ve returned to our stylistic roots.” The reasons for this return are fairly obvious: after a number of short-term line-up changes in 2008 and 2009, Motorjesus are back with their strongest line-up ever. What exactly does this mean? With the exception of their new bassist, Roman Jasiczak, the band is operating in the same constellation as in their early days, in other words with Chris Birx, the two guitarists, Andy Peters and Guido Reuss, and drummer Oliver Beck. These musicians are extremely well rehearsed and share the same musical direction. Yet there was no masterplan for their current songs: “We simply started to write new numbers without worrying about their direction. Perhaps the great homogeneity of the material is also due to the fact that a number of tracks were conceived in jam sessions at our rehearsal room.”Wheels Of Purgatory was recorded between July and September 2010 at the Sonic Sound Studio in Mönchengladbach, produced and mixed by Achim Kaiser, and mastered, as usual, at the Principal Studios in Münster. The result is definitely worth hearing, in terms of its compositions as well as its sound. The opener ‘Motor Discipline’ sees Motorjesus crossbreed rock with metal, refining this explosive nitrogen mix with a number of surprises. The same applies to the consciously snotty ‘King Of Dead End Road’ and the harsh ´Hammer Of The Lord’ with its ironically witty lyrics on the Redeemer’s new role. “The song describes Jesus as an action hero along the lines of Arnold Schwarzenegger,” Birx points out, adding: “But we only play with all this sacral-religious symbolism, like our band name does; serious blasphemy is completely alien to us, after all we were all raised as good catholic boys.”Motorjesus have recorded a total of 13 powerful rock songs plus a cover version of the Neil Young classic, ‘Old Man’, Wheels Of Purgatory’s atmospheric finale. As already mentioned above: this biblical purgatory puts the heat not only on the Pontiac-driving Jesus, but also stands for the inner fervour of the latest Motorjesus album. Wheels Of Purgatory – a heavenly heavy rock album, and at the same time a veritable ride to hell and back!

Album:

Active in one form or another since 1992 (officially changing their name in 2004 to the current MOTORJESUS as the band tired of censorship issues because of their previous profanity laced moniker), the quintet unleash their fourth full length record, a 13 song platter that assembles the best in Stoner Rock, Classic Hard Rock, and Metal angst to make a potent, addictive cocktail stylistically.Expect choruses that are easy to ingest and larger than life, musical hooks coming at you early and often, and a boat load of charisma and groove. John Bush-led ANTHRAX, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY during the 1990’s and MUSTASCH are three bands that come to mind the most when listening to these tracks. The riffs are down and dirty, mean and lean – while the vocals have a grit that hasn’t been heard from James Hetfield in quite some time, albeit through a southern /bluesy filter.Highlights are numerous. “Midnight Rider” has this take no prisoners, up-tempo punk vibe – the spitfire Chris Birx verse delivery in line with Lemmy Kilmister. “The Run” opens with a guitar sequence that could be a distant relative to “Wild Child” from W.A.S.P. before turning into this semi-gallop stoner metal track that forces your feet and hands to bounce. “Rust” starts in dual guitar mode with slow licks that would come straight out of LYNYRD SKYNYRD territory, a moving ballad that builds to a tremendous payoff through dynamic musical shifts and a multi-part vocal harmony that will be hard pressed to leave your headspace. All the way through to the drumming/bass boogie element permeating “Ressurection Man”, MOTORJESUS just have this intuition and sixth sense on where to lock onto the right riff/ chord combinations and hammer home the arrangements to become future set classics.Considering this is my first exposure to the band, I’m very surprised they haven’t tried to spread their wings into the North American market – as their sound is addictive and could rouse many audiences be it small bars to theater size arenas. If you love street level Hard Rock with stoner and metal textures, MOTORJESUS should be a no brainer purchase.

Album:

With line up changes finalised, the gasoline rockers from Mönchengladbach, Motorjesus are now set to unleash their fifth album release, Race to Resurrection. An uncompromising mix consisting of classic rock, traditional metal and punchy rock music it is out on the 15th June 2018 via Drakkar Entertainment.Don’t let Motorjesus’ rocking riffs fool you, Race to Resurrection has one foot firmly planted in the world of metal. Catchy rhythm and huge choruses get the blood pumping for the likes of Tales from the Wrecking Ball, Re-Ignite and Speed Sanctuary. The classic metal patter of Motorjesus isn’t going to win them any awards for originality but it certainly doesn’t lack quality.13 tracks long, it’s mostly all high-tempo tracks with the occasional ballad number thrown out such as The Infernal. It does start to drag on a bit in the latter half as repetition is the biggest problem. Race to Resurrection has many tracks that work as singles but a whole album full? It’s a bit too much. When it’s good though, it’s really good. Engines of War is an absolute treat of hard rocking riffs, Running Out of Time has a fist-pumping beat while Awaken the Tyrants has a bit more depth to it thanks to a melodic drop in pace about halfway through.

Album:

We love a bit of rock n roll… don’t we? Some of us like it all the time, some of us like it half the time, some of us like it only when we are intoxicated and are up for a laugh, either way you know what you’re going to get. There is a growing scale and class of rock n roll. Rolling Stones, The Ramones, Motorhead at one end; Band Tango, Shotgun Messiah and Kingdom Come at the other. Where do Motorjesus fit in on this range? The live album (this is my first encounter with this German rock ‘n roll troop) is always a good starting place if you are new to an established band.So when it comes to a live album: All the hits should be on here plus some more recent ones too, which is true of this album. All the songs should be recorded in one session, not always the case with a live album but this is true here. Which means you get an honest and true representation of the band at this point in time.Motorjesus - Live ResurrectionAfter hearing this album, I felt, even though I have never heard this band before, that I have heard all of these songs previously. I wondered when and where had I heard these songs beforehand? I’ve come to the conclusion very quickly that each country has a Motorjesus. A rock 'n roll band that crawls from the same DNA pool and thrives in the country of origin. They are influenced by the same bands but feed off the nation that houses them. England has The Wildhearts, rock 'n roll tinged with The Beatles; USA has Black Stone Cherry, rock 'n roll with a lick of southern rock; Australia has Airborne, rock 'n roll with... well rock 'n roll but hopefully you get my point. Motorjesus are a rock 'n roll band that come from Germany. And this is where I draw a blank. They are rock 'n roll but they are not influenced by the Scorpions, more Hanoi Rocks, Guns n Roses, but also a smidge of Pantrea and Metallica with a slight southern rock accent. So you can guess what the songs are like, high octane, fast paced good time anthems that encourage a sing along and a dam good time. The best of this bunch is 'The Howling'. Some of the songs are a bit corny, 'Motor Discipline' being very cringe worthy. But all the songs bounce along and singer Chris (Howling) Brix sings with such fire and enthusiasm that if you’re in attendance with some local brew inside of you and a good wind behind you, you’d find it tough not to join in.So let’s put another dime in the jukebox and play some rock ’n roll, if your into that sort of thing.Motorjesus release 'Live Resurrection' on December 20th via Drakkar Entertainment

Album:

In existence since 1992, Mönchengladbach’s MOTORJESUS are a band that have deserve a lot more recognition than they have been given over the last three decades. Now on the brink of releasing their 7th Studio album entitled ‘Hellbreaker’, and following on from 2020s ‘Live Resurrection’ that was recorded on the road whilst still being able to tour, they emphasise the phrase “If I ain’t broke, then don’t fix it”, to maximum effect with retro influences and a modern sound, achieving that difficult balancing act particularly well.Opening track ‘Drive Through Fire’ is blistering and straight to the point. If you’ve never heard the band before, think MOTÖRHEAD but with a Southern Rock vibe and early IRON MAIDEN style energy and this a great track which instantly makes you think of bikers & car drivers tearing down Route 66 well above the speed limit. ‘Battlezone’ keeps up the speed with 80s Metal noodling on guitars provided by Andy Peters & Patrick Wassenburg, the latter of which is making his debut with the band on this release as part of their new line-up. With the final lyrics of this number being ‘Welcome to the Battlezone’, it’s almost like the song was written as a welcoming for their latest member. The title track, I was lucky enough to be sent for my weekly radio show a while ago and ‘Hellbreaker’ speaks of determination, inner strength and breaking out for freedom. Three tracks in, three home runs so far.‘Beyond The Grave’ takes a darker, with a much more sinister vibe with being the heaviest and grittiest song so far and more a Post Grunge / Stoner vibe that wouldn’t sound out of place on a GODSMACK record and a superb piece of Radio Rock. In comparison ‘Dead Rising’ is lighter, punkier and much more upbeat. The relentless speed of this album where again, both guitarists are trading lead & rhythm duties and how Chris “Howling” Birx can deliver his vocals with so much speed, melody and execution simultaneously is a delight to listen to. Adam Borosch also provides German efficiency behind the drums, and whilst not being particularly flash with his playing, does the job very well. The middle point of this record ‘Car Wars’ lacks depth but as a transition track from the 1st to the 2nd half of the album, it works ok but is a bit of a filler compared to what has come before it. As the weakest song on this record, this only helps show how strong the rest of the album is. ‘Firebreather’ has a bass intro and groove and finally an opportunity to hear what Dominik Kwasny can provide. It’s nice to see a song on the album which has been built around his playing. ‘Lawbreaker’ picks up the pace again, finishing off with a very pleasant acoustic outro & clocking in at 5:04 is the 2nd longest track on the album (only opening track ‘Drive Through Fire is longer than this) and keeping the rest of the songs on the album, short-ish and sharp works brilliant. ‘Black Hole Overload’ instantly paints the picture of Adults celebrating & having a good time in a saloon bar in one of the southern parts of the United States. Another appearance from the acoustic guitar shows up here, this time being the build up to more superb guitar soloing before a final chorus. Penultimate track ‘Back to the Bullet’ sounds like the actual ending with its speed and “get back to work” mindset however this is a slight red herring as it’s followed straight on the acoustic instrumental ‘The Outrun’ which helps the listener take stock of the entire 44 minutes & 26 seconds that all together completes this LP.There’s so many potential anthems on this album which you can imagine being sung in arena’s and at festival’s, it makes one wonder how MOTORJESUS have gone under the radar for so many for so long. This is an absolutely superb record which bridges Hard Rock & Classic Metal which takes inspiration from other sub-genres without ever going off on a tangent or losing focus. A lot of credit for this has to go to the album producer Dan Swano for helping the band members focus on what they are great at, but also to the band themselves for executing this set of songs so well. For fans of PHIL CAMPBELL & THE BASTARD SONS, early IRON MAIDEN, old school JUDAS PRIEST, and no-nonsense Hard Rock & Roll. You shall not be disappointed.
