Mystery (stylized as MYSTERY) is a Canadian progressive rock band formed in 1986 by multi-instrumentalist Michel St-Père. Mystery's current line-up is St-Père and singer Jean Pageau, with touring musicians Benoît Dupuis, François Fournier, Sylvain Moineau and Jean-Sébastien Goyette. The group has been together for twenty years, but there's two clear phases in the band's history; the 90s with original singer Gary Savoie, and their new millennium Neo Prog era with vocalist Benoit David (in YES as well). The album posted here was a retrospective of the early years, now Mystery is presenting "Unveil The Mystery", covering the recent period starting in 2007.Mystery's progressive style is strongly impregnated by Melodic Rock / AOR waves, turning more 'easy', neo-prog with the material included into this CD.Ever the years, the band leaded by talented guitarist and composed Michel St-Pere has evolved from melodies inspied by Styx and Asia to more adventurous neo prog like that of Rush, Saga and even Journey, but featuring delicate acoustic passages not normally heard from these two.Mystery won't dazzle you with technical prowess but you will appreciate their strong melodies, elegant arrangements and attention to detail. And we have the velvety vocals of Benoit David. In 2008 David became the lead singer of Yes (as well as Mystery) filling in for Jon Anderson. This helped the band reach a wider audience. Not in vain Yes chosen Benoit David as vocalist, he steals the show here on many of the songs. There's not a single weak song on this disc, always interesting and propelled by heavenly melodies. One of my favorites is the prog pageantry of "Pride". The piece runs the gamut from reflective to rocking enhanced with soaring guitar leads throughout."Dear Someone" is expansive and expressive with engaging changes and strong solos. "Time Goes By" is stark at first then builds up to the catchy hook and continues to ebb and flow in its sentiments and speeds.Musically, Mystery is an incredibly very well balanced band that can be enjoyed by any audience. There's something for everyone here; elegance, hooks, beautiful acoustic passages and excellent vocals."Unveil The Mystery" is a proper compendium of one of the most underrated and ignored Melodic Neo Prog bands from Canada (perhaps because they are from the 'French side' of the country). The ideal way to discover the music and passion of Mystery.

Michel St-Pere - Guitars, Keyboards

With a new album gaining rave reviews it was agreed to assemble a live band consisting of both David and St-Père along with touring members Benoît Dupuis (keyboards), François Fournier (bass guitars), Sylvain Moineau (guitars) and Jean-Sébastien Goyette (drums). With a touring band in place, 2013 would prove to be a year of much travel with Mystery performing live monthly and for the first time outside of Canada. Concert dates took them to Mexico, the Netherlands and the UK. There is an old adage that says, “That which doesn’t kill you, only makes you stronger,” and certainly that would apply to Mystery. Their past may have been full of personnel upheaval and sadness and yet out of all that turmoil Mystery have evolved into one of the symphonic progressive rock genres leading bands. They have gone from strength to strength and continue to gain fans around the world with their classic sound and yet as they enter their 28th year of existence they still have much to prove and more music to write. Clearly the story is far from over.

Album:

Delusion Rain is the sixth studio album by the Canadian rock band Mystery, released in November 2015 on Unicorn Digital. The album features a new studio lineup for the band, with guitarist and keyboardist Michel St-Père, keyboardist Benoît Dupuis, bassist François Fournier, guitarist Sylvain Moineau, drummer Jean-Sébastien Goyette, and singer Jean Pageau. The album also features two guest musicians: Antoine Michaud on guitars who played guitars for Mystery during their 2014 tour and Sylvain Descoteaux who is a member of Huis. The cover art for the album was created by photographer Leszek Bujnowski, who also created the artwork for The World is a Game and Tales from the Netherlands, and is entitled Delusion Rain. One of the favorite Neo Prog bands of this blog, Canadians MYSTERY, will release their new album "Delusion Rain" next November 13, the first with vocalist Jean Pageau.Known for the exquisite vocals of Benoit David - who also was in Yes at the same time - after his departure in good terms with the rest of the band, he is being replaced by Pageau, another great find by Mystery.Again produced by mastermind, founder, guitarist and keyboard player Michel St-Père, "Delusion Rain" is a wonderful album that continues to showcase Mystery's outstanding musical abilities. St-Pere is truly a talented and gifted artist who continues to develop lush, deep and layered arrangements. For those unaware of Mystery's music, the band perform a mix of intelligent and tasteful AOR with careful progressive rock flavours, preferring to focus on well-written song structures with strong melodies. Most of the proggier instrumental flourishes are tightly incorporated around the songs, very rarely self-indulgent or trying to show off, and never at the expense of the overall tune. "Delusion Rain" is perhaps more progressive than the previous album, the songs are longer but as happens with quality Neo Prog bands, all flow easily thanks to the sweet and accessible melodies, something like 'songs into songs'.You have almost 3 songs inside opener title track "Delusion Rain", four parts in the excellent "The Willow Tree" and an exercise of gusto in closer "A Song for You".As usual, Mystery not only delivers top class music, but also some thought provoking lyrics; just check "Wall Street King".New singer Jean Pageau has brought a really nice fresh dimension to Mystery, as his vocals, still really melodius, have a slightly more 'Rock' approach. If you like beautifully crafted songs that display a ridiculously high standard of musicianship, then this is for you. If you like soaring guitars with solos akin to the likes of '80s David Gilmour which make the hairs on your back stand up, then this is for you. If you like proggy AOR ballads, then this is the best you will find. Add to all this some classic waves in the style of Marillion, '80s Yes, Rush, Saga, etc.You can't go wrong with Canadians Mystery, and the band has won me over again with "Delusion Rain". This new record is a pure delight: elegant, intense at places, always melodic. "Delusion Rain" is true Neo Prog; progressive arrangements with real sense, adorned with AOR / rock&pop sensibility, precise instrumentation and pristine production. Catch Mystery on tour all over Europe right now, you will thank me for the advise later.

Album:

I chose to review this live 2CD/DVD simply because I have previously had very nice experiences with Unicorn artists. I have no idea what MYSTERY sounds like and even if I’ll like it. I just go with my gut feeling on this one. What I do know to expect is for this to be progressive. I do not know how progressive this will be. But it does start on a very good note with a distorted guitar, so that can’t be bad can it? MYSTERY follows in a fine Canadian tradition of prog rock set by bands like Rush and Saga. I am not the greatest aficionado of prog rock. Too often it gets too technical for me and it dribbles me off but this I like. It brings back memories of me listening to Pallas second album in the 80s. Or listening to The Flower Kings in the present. And since they are Canadian I do hear a touch of Rush too. But the overall feeling is that this is a really cool live album and a great starting point for me to dig deeper into the universe that is MYSTERY.

Album:

We featured here many albums from one of the best Melodic Neo Prog bands from the last twenty years, Canadians MYSTERY. Now, the group, after many requests from fans and collectors, has remixed and reissued their debut album "Theatre Of The Mind [2018 Edition Remixed +1]", for years impossible to find. And this are great news, because this CD is strongly impregnated by Melodic Rock / AOR waves. In fact, "Theatre Of The Mind" is more AOR than proggy, akin Journey's 'Trial By Fire'.Mystery got some major press some years ago when Benoit David became the lead singer for YES. But at the early stages of the band there was other vocalist; Gary Savoie. When first hear him many years ago I was struck by his voice, absolutely one on one with Steve Perry, same tone and same color. While "Theatre Of The Mind" has a light progressive heart (early Journey do so), the overall production style, the guitar riffs, the synths and the crystal clear tenor vocals of Savoie brings to mind Journey's last album with Steve Perry, Asia, GTR, and a bit of country fellas Saga. The album begins very strong with the title track where each musician shine, very good piece showing that Mystery know to handle the instruments very well and the arrangements are mature for a band's debut.'Lonely Heart' is pure Journey-like melodic rock midtempo, 'Peace of Mind' adds acoustic to the mix but later grow-up wonderfully, 'Black Roses' showcases some terrific interplay, while 'The Inner Journey' creates fantastic atmospheres.I remember hearing a cassette copy of this (then) hard to find album, and if memory doesn't fails, this 2018 remix / remaster has turned things much more melodic and polished, plus the excellent bonus track "Heart of Stone".Mystery's "Theatre Of The Mind [2018 Edition Remixed +1]" will surprise you, and if you love classic Journey, do yourself a favor and grab a copy NOW.

Line Up:

Gary Savoie - lead and background vocals
Michel St-Père - guitar, synthesizers
Stéphane Perreault - drums, percussion, glockenspiel, synths
Benoît Dupuis - keyboards
Michel Painchaud - classical and acoustic guitars
Richard Addison - fretted and fretless bass guitars

additional musicians:

Patrick Bourque - bass
Patrice Bédard - keyboards
Marie-Claude Masse, Marie Lacasse, Ahimsa Gilbert - strings
Serge Gangloff - special FX synthesizer
Gilles Peltier - special FX and synthesizer programming

Tracklist:

01. Theatre Of The Mind 6:07
02. Lonely Heart 4:31
03. Peace Of Mind 4:50
04. Virtual Mentality 1:16

Album:

Canadian melodic and symphonic progressive rock band Mystery will release their eighth studio album, Redemption, on 15th May. It has been five years since their last album, the highly-acclaimed Lies and Butterflies, and whilst the live releases Live in Poznan (2019) and Caught in the Whirlwind of Time (2020) were wonderful retrospective collections highlighting the band’s live repertoire, the anticipation associated with new studio material has been steadily growing over recent years. It is marvellous (and a great relief) to report that Redemption is an absolute progressive rock triumph and has shown that the long gestation has been well worth the wait. The band were formed by guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Michel St-Père, back in 1986, although their debut EP was not released until 1992 and the first album only arrived in 1996. It was the lead vocals of Benoît David (and his subsequent tenure in Yes) which ignited a wider interest in the band, including the albums Beneath the Veil of Winter’s Face (2007) and One Among the Living (2010). However, on a personal basis, it was the discovery of The World is a Game in 2012 that made me appreciate the sheer abundance of quality within the group – and my subsequent and oft-repeated opinion that it was a ‘mystery’ why they were not much more popular and widely-recognised as their talents deserved – especially here in the UK (although they have quite a following in the Netherlands, amongst other countries). The replacement of Benoît with Jean Pageau as lead vocalist in 2014 could have proved a difficult transition, but 2015’s well-received Delusion Rain was a great response, and the subsequent Lies and Butterflies album saw the band develop and progress further still. By this stage the current line-up was well established, and it is this continuity that is behind the cohesion and synergy of the music. Joining Michel and Jean are Antoine Michaud (keyboards & guitars), Sylvain Moineau (guitars & keyboards), François Fournier (bass, pedals & keyboards) and Jean-Sébastien Goyette (drums), and the interplay and flexibility of this talented sextet is an integral part of their sound.Well, that’s the background – what about the album?Behind the Mirror starts things boldly, and it is textbook Mystery, combining all the elements you would expect from the band. It is a dramatic musical statement with a powerful and memorable guitar riff from Michel driving the song over Jean-Sebastien’s dynamic drumming, mingling with François’s rumbling bass. Jean’s clear and impassioned vocals carry the tale of a desperate flight of refugees from a troubled and ruined land, into a hopeful – although still uncertain – future.Michel delivers a soaring and vibrant guitar solo mid-way, as Antoine’s lush keyboards are heard to rise up from their supporting role, with Sylvain’s guitar contributing to the rich, symphonic soundscape. What follows is a diverse collection of songs that display all of this complex and interweaving musicality within the band. Jean’s stunning vocals and Michel’s melodic and expressive guitar chords and lively solos might dominate proceedings, but the ensemble work of the other musicians provides the canvas over which these elements can shine – and with their ability to add additional acoustic guitar and layers of keyboards and synthesisers to the sound, they allow a variety of tempo and textures.Redemption is slower and quite unsettling with Jean’s yearning, languid and apologetic vocals over a dramatic musical background that gradually builds in richness and depth as the keyboards flow over the chiming guitar patterns. The emotional, cathartic weight of the lyrics define the track wonderfully. The Beauty and the Least has a sweeping, epic feel, the lyrics reflecting the thoughts of a young girl locked in a cycle of guilt and regret for the path she has taken, but still hopeful of a way out in the future. Whilst steeped in emotion, it avoids being over-melodramatic by the musical intricacy and melodic, flowing structure highlighted throughout. Lead guitar breaks, warm, layered keyboards, repeating themes, rich harmonies and thoughtful, empathetic vocals are all there.Melodies and harmonies interweave seamlessly, whilst flights of fancy from guitars and keyboards soar high. There is a sense of resignation and regret throughout, but the grandeur of the music provides a satisfying finale, even if there is a hint of uncertainty in the final notes to suggest that the question in the song’s title might not been fully answered just yet.At over 74 minutes, the album is a sumptuous and wonderfully indulgent musical statement that is worthy of listening to in its entirety – but that doesn’t mean you can’t dip into individual tracks out of sequence and get pleasure from them. It is a progressive rock ‘piece de resistance’ that rewards a generous investment of time from any discerning listener, repeated plays revealing hidden qualities and interplay not necessarily apparent on first listen. I thought Delusion Rain and Lies and Butterflies would take some beating, but Redemption has revealed musicians at their artistic peak and fully at ease with the synergy their skills and vision produce, both on stage and in the studio. This is melodic and symphonic progressive rock at its most impressive and Mystery have produced another keynote musical feast that will undoubtedly be one of the albums of the year for many, including myself.
