Bio:

This American vocalist/guitarist started his career in the jazz rock group Pieces. He subsequently played with a number of similar bands on a short-term basis, and built up a reputation as a fine backing vocalist and talented songwriter. He worked with Cinderella, Y&T, Vixen and Lita Ford in this capacity and was offered a solo recording contract by PolyGram Records in 1986. He debuted with Race To Paradise the same year, a highly polished and melodic collection of AOR anthems, similar in style to Michael Bolton and Eric Martin. Wired Up saw Paris toughen up his approach. The album was typical North American rock and drew comparisons with Bruce Springsteen and Bryan Adams. However, both sets failed commercially and PolyGram terminated his contract in 1988.

Album:

If there's an '80s AOR album that deserved a remastering it was JEFF PARIS' "Wired Up". This terrific record always suffered of a poor mastering in my opinion, and Rock Candy specialists have done a very nice job on this essential 10-track melodic rocker.Back in the mid Eighties the Rock world seemed fixated on Melodic AOR singer / songwriters. Jon Bon Jovi, Richard Marx and Bryan Adams were of course leading the field, but just below the surface there were numerous contenders ready to ascend the throne.Jeff Paris was, naturally, a prime contender, with songs and a sound that suggested success would be a sure fired certainty. That he sank without trace remains one of life’s great mysteries. Signed to Mercury Records by the very same person who inked Bon Jovi, Cinderella and Kingdom Come, things looked very good indeed. So good in fact that, despite a lack-lustre reception to Jeff’s debut album ‘Race To Paradise’, the label dug down deep to back a follow up, this sensational "Wired Up", a record brimming over with confidence and optimism. Produced by Tony Platt (Foreigner, AC/DC, Krokus) and mixed by Bob Rock (Mötley Crüe, Bon Jovi,) the record was infused with some of the best melodic hard rock of the era. Issued in 1987 to gushing reviews, the album contains 10 melodic rock nuggets, garnished with razor sharp guitars performed by awesome guitar master Michael Thompson, and a souped up rhythm section part consisting of future Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum, and Night Ranger's Gary Moon on bass, a talented lead vocalist itself.Tracks such as "Saturday Nite", "Heart To The Flame" (also recorded by Van Zant) "Charmed Life" and "Cryin" (later successfully covered by all female rock band Vixen) makes for an album that not only exudes excitement but showcases Paris as an exceptional songwriter. And the man proves he can sing greatly, with a swagger and feeling on par with the renowned cats of the genre. If you never heard JEFF PARIS' "Wired Up" you're missing an important piece in your American AOR / Melodic Rock puzzle. If you already love it, listen this proper Rock Candy remaster.

Album:

The name JEFF PARIS is undoubtedly familiar to many American Hard Rock / AOR fans, thanks to his contributions as songwriter to a number of 80s greats (Lita FORD, Y&T, Mr. BIG, VIXEN, XYZ, Stevie SALAS). He also took part in the recording of CINDERELLA’s 1st album (Night Songs) in 1986 as an additional musician, playing keyboards.Less well known to the general public, this American musician has also had a solo career since the mid-80s. Having started out at the end of the 70s with PIECES, a band that mixed Jazz, Soul and Disco, and then with L.A.X, a Disco band, Jeff Paris finally found his feet in FM / Radio Rock in the Eighties. By the middle of the decade, he had signed to Mercury and was firmly on the road to a hopefully successful solo career. His first studio album, “Race To Paradise”, appeared in 1986. For the occasion, Jeff Paris was supported by the future drummer of Mr. BIG’s future drummer, Pat Torpey. Jeff Paris’ first solo album navigates the Melodic Rock / AOR waters of the time and will not confuse fans of the genre. Now reissue label Bad Reputation is releasing “Race To Paradise” for the first time on CD, including four bonus tracks. You can’t go wrong if you’re a sucker for mid-Eighties stuff. Tracks such as “I’m Better” and “Race To Paradise”, which veer openly towards melodic hard rock, and the mid-tempos “Mystery Girl” and “Hot Love”, are fairly classic in both form and content as they have all the ingredients to please aficionados (good choruses, biting guitars just right, a few layers of keyboards). Some tracks even stand out from the crowd, notably the midtempo “Don’t Make Promises”, which anticipates what WHITESNAKE will do shortly afterwards in 1987, then MR. BIG with its bluesy overtones,“Give It Away” is a lively, punchy Big-Rock / Hard US track with a strong melodic framework, Jeff Paris at his best vocally, backing vocals to match, not forgetting a very nice scratch solo, or to a lesser extent “Back On My Knees”, in the air of the times, but sufficiently well-written and well-arranged to be convincing. All in all, “Race To Paradise” is a well-crafted debut album for Jeff Paris, with its share of good songs, sticky choruses and huge melodies. You can tell why Jeff was one of the most requested songwriter back in the day.
