Album:

The eagerly awaited "City Streets" release from London AOR rockers MORITZ is finally released on September 1st 2008 on the 'Harmony Factory' label (Harmony Factory records HF002). Stablemates of HARTLESS, its another class release. The CD features all the songs from the 'Shadows of a dream' EP, originally released on vinyl only in 1987, plus the later tracks recorded in 1988 shortly before the bands demise, where Greg and fellow members Andy Stewart, Andy Elphick & Ian Edwards moved on to form IF ONLY, with Peter Scallan joining SAMSON on vocal in early 1989.Whilst in the eighties the likes of FM, Strangeways, Airrace, Tobruk, Romeo’s Daughter and Shy were the entire proud possessor’s of major label deals, the likes of AOK, La Paz, Zero Zero, Tora, Peroux and Tara Zara were all, in their own rights, damn fine bands that should have gained that elusive deal. However, out of all the unsigned British AOR bands one shone more brightly than the rest… Moritz!Six lads from London who, if there was any justice, should have shook the world, or at the very least, the UK! Formed in the mid-eighties, they crafted songs that were a pure AOR indulgence. In Greg Hart they had a master craftsmen who knew how to take the Yanks on at their own game. Their output may have only amounted to just a 7" single and a 12"EP, plus a few demos that surfaced later on, but their legacy is timeless. As DEREK OLIVER from KERRANG! stated in the review "...Makes Journey sound like Air Supply..." - A bold statement, maybe, but this release shows just how Moritz really did have the 'AOR rock' format sewn up.These songs have been hidden away for over twenty years.

Line Up:

Album:

Moritz was formed early 1986 in London. The simple aim was crafting quality AOR rock. A fantastic set of songs was quickly worked up. By late ‘86 they were playing the first of two now legendary Marquee shows in London's West End. The line-up comprising of Mike Nolan and Greg Hart on guitars, Ian Edwards on bass, Andy Stewart on keyboards and John Metcalfe on drums was augmented by vocalist Steve Annetts who departed from the ranks in early 1987. The band was joined by vocalist Peter Scallan (ex-Laurence Archer’s Secrets), who had originally auditioned for Moritz before Steve Annetts, but opted to join LA Secrets. A second sold out Marquee show quickly followed in July 1987. The band also recorded the now highly collectable 12” vinyl "Shadows Of A Dream" EP. A video was shot for the lead song "Can’t Stop Loving You" in autumn ‘87. Unfortunately, the band did not secure a major record deal and after a few line-up changes the band reluctantly folded in 1988. Peter joined Samson and recorded the album "Refugee". Hart, Edwards and Stewart formed the AOR outfit If Only. Ironically, If Only and Samson played together at the London Astoria in the summer of 1989.Fast forward to 2007, and a chance conversation with Rob Evans from Powerplay magazine and Greg Hart led to the release of "City Streets" on CD. This included the EP songs and some unreleased demos. By pure coincidence. The album was recorded over the last four years at a number of studios. It was produced by Moritz and mixed and mastered by bass/keyboard player Ian Edwards. It is now 30 years since the band’s first release, the now highly collectable 12” vinyl "Shadows Of A Dream" EP. To celebrate this, Moritz have resurrected the "Shadows Of A Dream" label for the new album.Peter got back in touch with Greg. They started tentatively writing some material with a view to doing a possible album. That album turned into "Undivided". Released in 2010, it received incredible reviews and even prompted Rob Evans to call it the greatest UK AOR album of the last 20 years”. Moritz was back and in spectacular fashion.

Album:

Moritz are one in a very long line of "what could have been" bands. Coming together as far back as 1986, Greg Hart (keyboards, guitar), Mick Neaves (drums), Ian Edwards (bass), Andy Stewart (piano, keyboards), Pete Scallan (vocals) and Mike Nolan (guitar) released a 7" single and an EP, as well as putting together some excellent demos. Even though they produced a classy AOR sound that was more than commercially viable for the times, Moritz failed to land a record contract and only two short years after they were formed, they was no more, with some of the band going on to form If Only. Fast forward to 2008 and thanks to some journalist support, the album City Streets appeared containing the four tracks from the band's EP and four other songs lifted from demos. The response was so positive that the six men of Moritz decided to get back together again for another shot at AOR glory and the resultant album, Undivided, is a mixture of brand new songs and some from twenty four years ago that have been rerecorded. There is no denying that Undivided sounds more like another lost gem from the past than a brand new collection of songs, however if you have a soft spot for the likes of Survivor, Night Ranger, FM, Journey and in places the more pompy feel of Tobruk, then you will not be able to resist what Moritz have to offer. Whilst that list of bands also means that yes, you will have "heard all this before", I have to say that Moritz do it so well, that it really isn't an issue. On the strength of the atmospheric keys and upbeat guitars of "Lonely Without You", the keyboard punch of "Same But Different", or the heart string tugging ballad "Should've Been Good" it would be no exaggeration to suggest that if they had gotten the breaks, Moritz could be the household names that Journey or Foreigner are today. The twin guitar attack from Hart and Nolan adds a cutting edge to Andy Stewart's keyboard work, while in Pete Scallan Moritz have a singer that has the class of Lou Gramm, the histrionics of Steve Perry (without the glass shattering pitch) and the bluesy grit of Paul Rogers.Undivided is AOR of the highest order and maybe due to the fact that the band were there when this music ruled the airwaves, it has a real heart and soul that is often lacking from a lot of the newer bands in this genre, adding a welcome air of authenticity to the Moritz sound. Very classy indeed!
