Bio:

The Joe Perry Project is an American rock band formed by Aerosmith lead guitarist Joe Perry. Perry started working on forming the band shortly before his departure from Aerosmith in 1979. The Joe Perry Project signed a record deal almost immediately after Perry's exit from the band with Aerosmith's label, Columbia Records, who were disappointed with the chaos in the Aerosmith camp and hoping to maneuver Perry back into Aerosmith. The original band line-up consisted of Perry, singer Ralph Morman, bassist David Hull, and drummer Ronnie Stewart. This line-up recorded The Project's 1980 debut album, Let the Music Do the Talking, which was produced by long-time Aerosmith producer Jack Douglas. The album was fairly well received and sold a respectable 250,000 copies in America within its first six months of release.During the tour in support of the album, Morman's behavior became very erratic due to alcohol-related issues, and he was dismissed from the band in June 1980. He was temporarily replaced by singer Joey Mala, of the New York-based act Revolver, in order for Perry to fulfill concert obligations until a permanent vocalist could be brought in. Morman would go on to become lead singer for Savoy Brown a few weeks after being fired from the Perry organization. A permanent replacement for Morman was found in singer and rhythm guitarist Charlie Farren. Perry, Farren, Stewart, and Hull recorded one album, I've Got the Rock'n'Rolls Again, which proved to be less successful than the group's debut effort. Columbia's reluctance to promote the album combined with Perry's continuing drug and financial problems led to the entire band quitting in 1982.Equipped with a new record label (MCA Records) and three new band members in singer Cowboy Mach Bell, bassist Danny Hargrove and drummer Joe Pet, the band released Once a Rocker, Always a Rocker in 1983. The album met the same fate as its predecessor, selling less than 50,000 copies. Despite the poor sales, The Project went out on a final tour in support of the album, adding then-former Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford to the line-up.A compilation album, The Music Still Does the Talking: The Best of the Joe Perry Project, was released by an Australian Indie Record label in 1999.On October 6, 2009, Joe Perry, on his own record label (Roman Records) released a solo album titled Have Guitar, Will Travel. The first single was called "We've Got a Long Way to Go."Although the record was released as a Perry solo album, the touring band included original bassist David Hull and was billed as The Joe Perry Project. Also participating were guitarist/keyboardist Paul Santo (Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne, Ringo Starr), drummer Marty Richards[8] ( James Montgomery, Norah Jones, The J. Geils Band) and German vocalist Hagen Grohe who was discovered by Billie Perry (Joe Perry's wife) on YouTube. The new Joe Perry Project also backed Joe on his latest album, making it a de facto JPP album. On September 20, 2009, the new Joe Perry Project played the first public concert of the Have Guitar, Will Travel Tour at Memorial Hall in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The show was announced just days before the event. Fans who attended were the first to hear some of the new songs from the upcoming album, as well as a handful of classic Aerosmith songs including: "Let the Music Do the Talking" (original JPP version), "Walkin' The Dog," "Dream On," "Combination" and "Walk This Way." The final song of the night was a cover of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World."During the 2009–2010 tour, the Joe Perry Project opened for Bad Company and Mötley Crüe.

Album:

THE JOE PERRY PROJECT 3rd album "Once A Rocker, Always A Rocker" in its Japanese SHM-CD mini-LP remastered reissue, now out of print. It was a limited edition, and the sound quality is superb. After the band's great second album 'I’ve Got The Rock ’N’ Rolls Again', Joe Perry completely reformed the whole project and recruited three new band members: Cowboy Mach Bell (vocals), Joe Pet (Drums) and Danny Hargrove (Bass). With this new line-up and the determination to climb back up to stardom with his band, the musical orientation for "Once A Rocker, Always A Rocker" was slightly more commercial, focused on radio ready songs yet rocking storming anyway.Mach Bell's vocals brought a new dimension to the band, and overall he rocks with a strong, distinctive delivery. The opening title track, 'Once A Rocker, Always A Rocker' is a short (just under 3 minutes) but a kickin' rock and roller, very bluesy based. Next is one of the highlights, 'Black Velvet Pants'. The intro to this song is outstanding with Joe's guitar solo and then a cool rhythm.'Women In Chains' is one of my favorites, not strange as it was co-written by talented AOR-related Tom DeLuca. This is an excellent mid-paced song with interesting arrangements and lyrics about how women are sometimes mistreated or ignored.‘Crossfire’ sounds like a lost Aerosmith song with Bell's vocals similar to Steven Tyler, and there’s some fine sax playing at the end.All members find room to shine on ‘King Of The Kings’ (love the rounded bass sound on this one), and then we find a fine cover of T. Rex's ‘Bang A Gong’.More classic Joe Perry Project from their first era is the straight rock’n’roll of ‘Walk With Me Sally’, which alongside Joe's shuffle riffs there's some great honky-tonk piano playing courtesy of guest Harry King. The LP close with ‘Never Wanna Stop’, a funky rocker with a fun guitar work including a 'slide solo' by Joe.After the "Once a Rocker, Always a Rocker", Perry started conversations with Tyler, ditched the Project and returned to his original compadres, Aerosmith, in 1984.
This final Joe Perry Project album rocks with a melodic, focused songwriting, and this rarely seen SHM-CD release blows out of the water any other version out there in terms of sound quality.

Bio:

As co-founding member, principal co-songwriter, electrifying lead guitarist and co-producer of Aerosmith, America’s Greatest Rock & Roll Band, JOE PERRY has achieved permanent iconic stature in the pantheon of rock. He has driven his band, over the course of three decades, to sales of more than 150 million albums, four Grammy Awards, 12 MTV Video Music Awards, two People’s Choice Awards, eight American Music Awards, an Academy Award and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.Joe’s fourth solo album, 2005’s Joe Perry, not only received universal praise from journalists across the country, it earned him his first solo Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Song (“Mercy”). “Perry applies his craft with an ear for atmosphere and a respect for nuance,” proclaimed USA Today at the time. “This is his most virile and free work of his non-Aerosmith career,” said the New York Daily News. One Boston-based journalist perhaps summed it up best. “The power and the craftsmanship of his playing are transfixing.”Joe’s new and fifth solo CD Have Guitar, Will Travel, named by Joe Piscitelli, one of nearly 2,000 names given as part of a Twitter search, reveals even more intriguing layers of the guitarist who was immortalized in 2008 when Activision released the Guitar Hero®: Aerosmith, sales of which broke records and further solidified another generation of fans for Joe and Aerosmith.Have Guitar Will Travel, follows self-produced solo releases including Let The Music Do The Talking (1980), Once A Rocker, Always A Rocker (1984) and I've Got The Rock 'N' Rolls Again (1981). Recorded this past Spring at the BoneYard, Perry's state-of-the-art home studio, where Aerosmith’s Honkin’ On Bobo and Just Push Play were recorded, Have Guitar, Will Travel is a ten-song CD written and produced by Perry, complete with his trademark rock and blues ferocity. The CD’s blazing first single “We’ve Got A Long Way To Go,” showcases the voice of a young German singer known as Hagen, found completely by chance on YouTube by Joe’s wife Billie. “I first called him from Cleveland when I went to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Jam with Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Ron Wood, Flea and Metallica,” said Perry. “It took several minutes to convince him that it wasn’t a prank call, but a true invitation to audition to sing on the CD.” Hagen mans the microphone for five tracks, while Perry sings lead on four. The remaining tenth song is an instrumental entitled “Wooden Ships.”“Freedom,” a hard-driving signature Perry track, was written during an election year. “On this record, as opposed to my last solo CD, I thought that I’d write a bit more about what is going on outside instead of inside, and freedom is a really good example of that,” said Perry. “It’s musically inspired by Hunter S. Thompson’s book “Fear and Loathing” that I read during the seventies. Those images have always stuck with me. In fact, I think I lived a bit of it.”Still as scorching hot on guitar as he is preternaturally cool in his persona, Perry attracted an eclectic blend of musicians with whom he recorded. Drummer Ben Tileston, a Boston University percussion graduate, who plays drums with two of Perry’s sons in TAB The Band, joined an esteemed roster of some of the best that the music world has to offer; Bassist David Hull, who played with The Buddy Miles Band at 19 and was in the Joe Perry Project in the 80s, Paul Santo, whose played Hammond Organ/Pipe Organ with the likes of Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton and Ozzy Osbourne, drummers Scott Meeder and Marty Richards and Willie “Loco” Alexander, Boston’s “Godfather of Punk,” who was part of the Bostown sound of the band “the Bagatelle.”It was Alexander who helped Perry pay tribute to the legendary Gene Vincent on the track “Head Kicked In Tonight.” “If Elvis was the “Dom Perignon,” Gene Vincent is the “White Lightening Moonshine” with a stiletto in his boot,” said Perry. “With the Boogie Woogie played by Willie (Alexander), we had a great time recording this song. It turned out to be quite a party.”Perry is planning a “short, fast, hard tour” with the Joe Perry Project after Have Guitar, Will Travel is released. “That’s what I’m really looking forward to – getting back out there with some old friends and some other musicians and doing it like it used to be done.”Perry’s solo credits include composing the theme song for the "Spiderman" animated TV series, as well as the instrumental music for the independent movie “This Thing of Ours,” which starred James Caan. In late 2006, at the personal invitation of Chuck Berry, Perry jammed with Mr. Berry and his band at his 80th birthday celebration at Blueberry Hill in St. Louis. Joe also lent his guitar virtuosity to Mick Jagger's Goddess in the Doorway and played guitar on Les Paul & Friends: A Tribute To A Legend, amongst many others. In fact, Perry’s guitar prowess was documented in a version of James Moore's “I'm A King Bee,” performed with Aerosmith band mate Steven Tyler and seen on the 2005 Martin Scorsese-produced concert on the blues, Lightning In A Bottle. On July 1, 2007, Perry joined Tom Jones and his band at the historic “Concert For Diana” at Wembley Stadium on the classic “Ain’t That A Lot of Love” (with Joss Stone on guest vocals) and covers of Prince’s “Kiss” and the Arctic Monkeys' “I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor.” Between this appearance, viewed by more than 500 million worldwide, and his special guest performance with Kelly Clarkson on the 2007 season finale of “American Idol,” Perry and his fiery signature guitar sound were a part of two of the year’s biggest TV events. In June 2006, Perry and his wife Billie hosted a concert for the town of Woodstock, Vermont, where they have a home, by the Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars. Later that year, Perry joined the All Stars on stage for a medley of Bob Marley's “War” and “Get Up Stand Up.” The couple also ensured that the band would continue to pursue their music by providing them with instruments, along with a MAC computer for the youngest member. In 2003, Perry launched his own food company: Joe Perry's Rock Your World® With the first products being BoneYard Brew™ Hot Sauce, later followed by Mango Peach Tango™; Perry is planning to release his Mac and Cheese “Rockin' Roni™" later this year. It will have two flavors: White Cheddar and Shells and Spicy Buffalo Cheddar and Elbows.Perry and his family are well-known animal lovers and helped to fund the building of a new animal shelter in their community. They were also instrumental in bringing awareness to the Friesian Horse. Twenty years ago, Joe and Billie were the first in the New England area to own a pair of the once endangered breed, a cause Billie is very involved with. In that time, the Friesian Horse has gone from the endangered list to rare breeds list and now numbers in the tens of thousands in America alone.

Album:

2018 release from the legendary Aerosmith guitarist. Sweetzerland Manifesto features 11 hard-rocking original songs from the legendary Aerosmith guitarist. Joining Perry is a Murderers Row of some of the baddest names in rock, including Robin Zander (Cheap Trick), who sings on the single "Aye, Aye, Aye", David Johansen (New York Dolls), and Terry Reid. Even world-famous actor Johnny Depp gets in on the action, playing drums on "Eve Of Destruction". Joe Perry was ranked 84th in Rolling Stone's list of The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. In 2001, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of Aerosmith, and in 2013, Perry and his songwriting partner Steven Tyler were recipients of the ASCAP Founders Award and were also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Album:

JOE PERRY‘s ‘Sweetzerland Manifesto’ was a perfectly good album when it came out five years ago. To some the most exciting new music from anywhere in the Aerosmith universe in 25 years or so. The good news is that Perry’s upcoming LP ”Sweetzerland Manifesto MKII” is more of the same, but not just the same thing twice.Four of MKII’s tracks are recasts from the original Sweetzerland Manifesto, albeit with alternate performances from its guest singers – including Gary Cherone, Terry Reid, Robin Zander, and more – and fresh mixes. But it’s the six all-new tracks that are the draw here, as hot as anything from its predecessor and assuring us that when there’s a guitar in his hand, he’s still Joe Perry 50 years after Aerosmith’s first album.MKII starts on fire with “Fortunate One,” a shuffling rocker with vocals by the Black Crowes’ Chris Robinson, with Perry’s sometimes Hollywood Vampires bandmate Robert DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots on bass. It’s meat-and-potatoes, but top cut and well-chewed, and it’s not long before Perry fires off the first of many scorching solos that sear the album.Extreme and Van Halen alumnus Gary Cherone does the honors on “Quake,” a gritty room-shaker that truly gets the lead out. Cheap Trick’s Robin Zander, whose “Aye Aye Aye” from the first album is reprised here, is back (along with DeLeo) for “Suck It Up,” another stomper, while British-born veteran Terry Reid, another Sweetzerlander vet, returns for “Goes His Own Way,” MKII’s gentlest moment and a showcase for how effective Perry can be with more melodic and deliberate phrasings.Perry takes lead vocals on the grooving “Time Will Tell,” a cautionary tale that slips into beat poetics in spots, and on the new instrumental “Man With a Golden Arm,” he moves between bluesy grind and jazzy fusion – not quite of the Jeff Beck or John McLaughlin variety but still a mark of his upper-echelon guitar chops. The repeats, meanwhile, fit nicely alongside these newcomers and add to MKII’s range, whether it’s the raw, hyper-speed “Aye Aye Aye” or the trippy, string-accented “I Wanna Roll” sung by New York Dolls survivor David Johansen. Two of Reid’s Sweetzerland tracks are also back, the Middle Eastern-flavored “Won’t Let Go” and the psychedelic blues raver “I’ll Do Happiness.”It’s not often that an artist can go back to the same well and draw something fresh. That’s what Perry has done on ”Sweetzerland Manifesto MKII”, however, and we’ll certainly pay attention if MKIII ever happens to come along.

Line-Up:

Joe Perry - guitar (AEROSMITH , The Joe Perry Project , Hollywood Vampires)
