Bio:

King Kobra was formed in 1983 when legendary drummer Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge, Rod Stewart) approached Mark Free to add his vocals to some tracks he had previously written and recorded with guitarist Earl Slick (John Lennon, David Bowie). Three songs - "Overnite Love Affair," "Fool In The Rain" and "You Are My Life" - were strong enough to secure King Kobra a deal with Capitol Records. Producer Spencer Proffer, however, insisted on all new material for the band's major label debut, and the demos were scrapped, never to be released. With an album to make, Appice and Free started auditioning players and writing songs. Guitarist Mike Wolfe came aboard and immediately kicked in some song ideas of his own. Keel's guitarist David Michael Phillips was then brought in, followed by wild-man bassist Johnny Rod. Before he was able to record a single note, Wolfe bailed out to open a recording studio, and was quickly replaced by Mick Sweda. The line-up of Free, Phillips, Rod, Sweda and Appice would go on to record two solid albums for Capitol - Ready To Strike and Thrill of a Lifetime. For the next three years, King Kobra toured the world over, barnstorming North and South America - as well as parts of Europe and Japan - supporting such formidable headliners as KISS, Iron Maiden and Queensryche. During this time, the band attempted to re-introduce their original demos into the fold, adding Rod's basslines, but sidelining them again before they were able to include Phillips and Sweda. In 1986, Rod accepted an invitation to join W.A.S.P., and was replaced by Lonnie Vincent. Two new songs were cut - "Lonely Nites" and "Young Hearts Survive" - but were abruptly haulted when Free became dissatisfied with the direction of King Kobra was going. Stepping in for Free, vocalist Marq Torien, Appice, Phillips, Sweda and Vincent wrote and recorded six fresh tracks, including "Your Love Is A Sin." Unfortunately, the combination was short-lived as Torien, Sweda and Vincent went on to form Bulletboys, taking along tunes like "Kissin" and "For The Love Of Money" for their own major label debut.Undeterred, Appice and Phillips pressed forward and initiated vocalist Johnny Edwards (who would later migrate to Foreigner), bassist Larry Hart and guitarist Jeff Northrup - core members of a group called Northrup. Combining their ideas and talents, they recorded King Kobra III for Appice's own Rocker Records label. Songs like "Perfect Crime," "Mean Street Machine," "#1," "Red Line" and "Walls Of Silence" exhibited a new maturity and growth in the band's sound. But it was not to last. This time, Appice received a call from John Sykes and Tony Franklin to join Blue Murder, and after five years, King Kobra was solemnly laid to rest. When you think of King Kobra, a vision of four bleached blondes out in front with one of rock's preeminent drummers in the driver's seat may come to mind. Beneath the hype and heady days of the 80's hard rock scene, however, there were true, inherent surges of brilliance from bands like King Kobra who boasted strong songs, precision chops and exuberant performances. Amidst the shuffle, plenty of ideas would never see the light of day. For King Kobra, much of their most powerful material fell into a well of lost years, and is exclusively presented here for the very first time. For fans of a period when the hair was big and the notes were fat, it's a treat worth the wait.

Album:

"Kollection" 2CD release put together by King Kobra founder Carmine Appice few years ago.The package includes the complete "King Kobra III" (appeared in 1988 and Out Of Print) completely remastered by Appice himself with the help of friend engineers, and a second CD full of B-Sides & Rarities, many of them previously unavailable in North America, plus the never released track "Subway", featuring C.C. DeVille from the band Poison on guitar, a much sought after recording by King Kobra fans."King Kobra" III was originally released in 1988 via the small label New Renaissance Records, featuring new vocalist Johnny Edwards in the 'hard to fit shoes' of Mark / Marcie Free who quit the band a year before.Edwards does a very good job, and there's some killer, criminally underrated songs here in the vein of King Kobra's first album or Quiet Riot. When "Kollection" was released some time ago I heard / read some comments that "King Kobra III" is not remastered at all here. Well, they must be partially deaf as indeed it's fully remastered. I guess these people heard the digital files put online from some dubious source."King Kobra III" sounds fabulous with a punchy, bright remaster rich in high / bottom harmonies. And the bonus disc includes solid tracks deserving to be listened, some featuring Mark / Marcie Free and others the very good Kelly Keeling (Baton Rouge) on lead vocals."Kollection" is a great opportunity to listen the very hard to find "King Kobra III" plus some rare recordings from the mighty King Kobra.

For King Kobra, much of their most powerful material fell into a well of lost years, and is exclusively presented here for the very first time. For fans of a period when the hair was big and the notes were fat, it's a treat worth the wait.

Album:

Fronted by the unique Marcie (Mark) Free, KING KOBRA was one of the outstanding acts from the '80s US Melodic Hard Rock scene. Their two first, most celebrated albums, have been 'Remastered & Reloaded' by Rock Candy Records for our pleasure.Criminally underrated during the hair metal heyday - King Kobra certainly deserved a huge success - the band combined the killer drumming of legend Carmine Appice with the talents of vocalist Mark Free (later Marcie Free), guitarists David Henzerling and Mick Sweda, and bassist Johnny Rod, the band’s first and best known lineup. The first of the two albums reissued & remastered by Rock Candy Records is King Kobra's debut, 1985’s "Ready To Strike", and this is easily the more heavy, aggressive release of the two.Musically they received plaudits for their compelling energy infused riffs, shout-it-out-loud hooks and high-flying vocals.Produced by Spencer Proffer (Quiet Riot, WASP, Cheap Trick) and signed to Capitol Records, the band’s debut album "Ready To Strike" won them the attention of fans and critics alike by delivering one of the year’s best records. This album rocks hard, while at the same time definitely accessible and catchy. A great mix of heavy and melodic sounds, there are plenty of highlights to be had here, including the anthem 'Hunger', standing out with its melodic driven moments and arena-ready chorus. There's a great rocker in 'Tough Guys', a punchy killer tune on ‘Piece Of The Rock’, while the title track has that awesome atmosphere with its intriguing intro.Another favorite is the hard rocking 'Shadow Rider', and even the great semi-power ballad in the form of 'Dancing With Desire'.Exactly why the band never quite took off has long been the subject of debate, with potential reasons ranging from emphasis in the music industry shifting, to the band getting the short end of the stick when it came to their publicity and representation from their record label. Regardless, the group was shortchanged and never achieved the possible commercial success.Mick Sweda (and later members Marq Torien and Lonnie Vencent) would later jump ship and enjoy later success in Bulletboys, but even then, it has been stated in interviews with Appice that that band’s success with their first album resulted from their reworking of in-progress King Kobra songs!Ready To Strike" should have been a major chart buster, but sadly, this was not to be. But, all the more reason it is worth rediscovering here with this very good Rock Candy remaster.Mark / Marcie Free performance is jaw-dropping, the drums are a blast, and the songs kick major ass.Certainly this record is one of the best examples of mid-80s US hard rock ever created.

Line-Up:

Mark Free - lead and backing vocals
David Michael-Philips - guitars, backing vocals, synths
Mick Sweda - guitars, backing vocals, synths
Johnny Rod - bass, backing vocals
Carmine Appice - drums, backing vocals, percussion

03. Shadow Rider 4:02

06. Breakin' Out 3:57
07. Tough Guys 4:19

Fronted by the unique Marcie (Mark) Free, KING KOBRA was one of the outstanding acts from the '80s US Melodic Hard Rock scene. Their two first, most celebrated albums have been 'Remastered & Reloaded' by Rock Candy Records for our pleasure."Thrill Of A Lifetime" is their second effort, a much more melodic oriented affair. On "Thrill Of A Lifetime", King Kobra, their management, their recording label and - truth to be said, founder member Carmine Appice - decided to drastically change the musical direction. The quite menacing hard rocking sound from their debut album morphed into a poppy AOR / radio friendly / keyboard dominated style, according to the mid-Eighties US trend. The album overall 'waterfall of synthesizers' sound alienated first time fans looking for a continuation of the debut.I think you need to approach "Thrill Of A Lifetime" from a new perspective: this is a record focused to a different audience. And that target were lovers of slick, poppy, wimpy AOR with a little edge and anthemic choruses.Seeing "Thrill Of A Lifetime" as a typical middle-80s keyboard driven album with FM radio orientation, this is a superb record. There's compressed electronic drums, synth galore and killer choruses. The material was spearheaded by the hugely infectious ‘Iron Eagle (Never Say Die)’, a hit from the 'Iron Eagle' movie soundtrack. This song is an immense anthem and if you love '80s pumping AOR this track alone worth the disc.We find a fantastic melody on 'Second Time Around' which always reminded me of Night Ranger, a Loverboy-like catchy winner on 'Dream On', and a stronger rocker on title track 'Thrill Of A Lifetime'.I hear some Foreigner touches in 'Feel The Heat', you can't go wrong with a song titled 'Only the Strong Will Survive', while 'Overnight Sensation' is pure fun.For those missing the hard rocking edge from the first album, 'Raise Your Hands To Rock' and 'Party Animal' (where Appice play his 'wood drums' with fury) will rock your socks off. Then there's the rap-rocker 'Home Street Home' mixing hard rock with an early, rapping rhythm / vocal style which perhaps is the song that most controversy generated. Its metal meets rap certainly was ahead of its time (Beastie Boys sold millions with this style later) but somehow disoriented King Kobra's fans and more traditional hard rock listeners. However, the song provides variation to the album and I always liked it, even more the very rare 'Home Street Home (Street Mix)', the extended remix featuring some wild guitar solos included in this Rock Candy reissue as bonus track. If you are looking for edgy melodic hard rock, grab King Kobra's brilliant debut (presented Here), but if you're as well a sucker for uber polished, fluffy, and even cheesy poppy AOR - read pure '80s - then "Thrill Of A Lifetime" is a mandatory listen.Perhaps not all songs are exceptional, but there's many tracks which are the true definition of pure US AOR from the era.

Line-Up:

Mark Free - lead vocals
David Michael-Philips - guitar, backing vocals
Mick Sweda - guitar, backing vocals
Johnny Rod - bass, backing vocals
Carmine Appice - drums, backing vocals
Duane Hitchings - keyboards, synths

Tracklist:

01. Second Time Around 4:03
02. Dream On 4:26
03. Feel the Heat 3:53
04. Thrill of a Lifetime 4:06
05. Only the Strong Will Survive 3:54
06. Iron Eagle (Never Say Die) 3:30
07. Home Sweet Home 4:21
08. Overnight Sensation 4:20
09. Raise Your Hands to Rock 3:47
10. Party Animal 3:53

Album:

King Kobra II (or II) is a 2013 album by the hard rock band King Kobra. It was the second release by the band King Kobra since its reformation by founding member Carmine Appice (of Rod Stewart, Ozzy Osbourne and Blue Murder). It features most of the original lineup, with the exception of new member Paul Shortino on vocals; Shortino had previously appeared on the band's 2011 self-titled reunion album. Shortino and Appice are joined by original members Johnny Rod, Mick Sweda, and David Henzerling. With founding member and drummer Carmine Appice leading the way, King Kobra made their come back in 2011 with a self-titled sixth album. It was a solid hard rock effort proving that, even after 25 years, King Kobra could still deliver the goods. They're back with the follow up, titled II, a seventh album actually; confused yet? Don't be. The larger question is whether this album has the same strength as the previous one. After a spin or two, my initial answer is 'yes and no' or 'maybe;' it's definitely one of annoying ambivalence. I could even say it's different than the previous album, but that doesn't say enough wither. II is still classic hard rock, straight Eighties stuff, maybe even a step back into late Seventies on some tunes. One thing that seems pumped up is the blues aspect as on Deep River or Have a Good Time, by example. While the album is definitely fluid, following that blues hard rock vein, there's a certain curious detachment between songs. I guess that's what makes it different: the songs are varied and then interesting. But I'm probably over thinking this thing.Fundamentally, there are some really good rockers here. The best include Have a Good Time, Hell on Wheels, Running Wild, The Crunch, and the infectious and catchy Knock Them Dead, such a great chorus. They should cut a video for this song. King Kobra gives you two pseudo-ballads with the soulful reminiscing of Take Me Back and the milder AOR melodic rock of Got It Coming, with singer hoping to recover his lost love. Perhaps the most curious song here is The Ballad of Johnny Rod (an ode to or by the bass player, I suppose) which mimics some guitar licks from ZZ To,p ala La Grange, and turns on a real rock boogie groove. So in the end, to answer the question: Is II as good as it's predecessor? Dodging the question, I'll simply say I liked it and if you liked the previous album then, by all means, get this one. You won't be disappointed.

Album:

I must admit that at the time with so much music around and no real profile outside of the U.S. that King Kobra pretty much passed me by early on even though they boasted a great line-up and had the legendary Carmine Appice leading the show from behind the kit. Maybe they were just a couple of years too early and threw in the towel a little too soon after three records, just as their kind of music was peaking in 1989 when Appice left to play with John Sykes in Blue Murder.Looking back now there’s a lot to like especially on those first two Marcie Free fronted records ‘Ready To Strike’ and ‘Thrill of a Lifetime’ though ‘III’ is also an interesting record which features Johnny Edwards on vocals who had stints with both Foreigner and Montrose after their more revered frontmen left. It’s funny how projects go though, when I last interviewed Paul Shortino back in June 2021 he told me that “ I’m also doing some stuff with Carmine. Doing another King Kobra record that will be released on Cleopatra called ‘Music is a Piece of Art’ – this friend of mine Chris Comet is working on the artwork.” and here we are two years later and whilst the record has now been renamed “We are Warriors” it opens with that very piece of music – a smoky, blue-infused hard rocker that signals King Kobra is back.King Kobra has an interesting lineage too if you follow your Rock family trees with the Icon connections of David Henzerling (or David Michael-Philips as he was on those first records) on guitar. That’s all in the rearview mirror though now with a new line-up that retains only Paul Shortino, Johnny Rod (Bass since 2010 this time around) and Carmine from their last outing when they released ‘King Kobra’ in 2011 and ‘King Kobra II’ in 2013.King Kobra 2023 comprises of new guitarists Carlos Cavazo (Quiet Riot) and Rowan Robertson (Dio) who are of course both great guitarists but the sound has a slightly Bluesier edge than their more recent outings which is fine by me: but with new guitars and vocals King Kobra like snakes do has really shed it’s skin and looks a little sleeker than maybe it did last reunion. Some less gracious might even say it’s really just a different band entirely. What you get is a mixed bag, though always entertaining and it’s not often I level this – but maybe even a few songs heavier than necessary when mist rock bands seem to be things down to nine of ten tracks to tap into the vinyl revival.‘Turn Up The Music’ for example is a nice mid tempo number with a touch of smoke, whilst ‘Secrets And Lies’ comes on like a train and rides a cool groove. ‘Drownin’’ adds a little more grit and stomps up a storm with a great refrain. Sadly though there’s no out and out ‘balls out’ rockers here and everything sounds cool if a little restrained.‘One More Night’ is another Bluesy mid-tempo rocker that has a Rainbow/Deep Purple flavour and like everything here a great vocal from Shortino. For a bit of deja vu ‘Love Hurts’ is the cover of the Boudleaux Bryant song originally made famous by the Everly Brothers and covered by the immortal Nazareth, a band who had a real knack of taking a pop song and rocking out with it (reaching number 8 in the U.S. in 1976). This version is a real homage to Dan McCafferty and perfect for Shortino’s voice. I’d have loved then to have taken another classic and seen that they could do with it but anything that gets people listening to Nazareth is fine by me.‘Dance’ and its sleazy slow crawl is another winner; before ‘Darkness’ adds some cowbell led big groove retro Zeppelin to the mix; and title track ‘We Are Warriors’ (released as a single) an homage to the Sunset Strip that has that early 80’s flavour down pat. We close what will be the vinyl version with the highway song ‘Drive Like Lightning’ that adds a little more cool bluesy midtempo rocking to the mix, very much in keeping with the flavor of the album. The CD adds two additional tracks: ‘Trouble’ and ‘Side By Side’. The stuttering groove of the former you feel is maybe not up to the level of the rest here, whilst the demi- ballad ‘Side By Side’ I really like and really suits Paul’s delivery. This is definitely a grower and if you love that Bluesier hard rock that eschews speed for feel then it’s a keeper.

Line-Up:

Paul Shortino - vocals
Carlos Cavazo - guitar
Rowan Robertson - guitar
Johnny Rod - bass, backing vocals
Carmine Appice - drums, backing vocals

08. Darkness
