Bio:

Danish born vocalist/guitarist Henrik Ostergaard formed Dirty Looks in Erie, Pennsylvania before heading to the bright lights of San Francisco, California. While in California, and upon their return home, the group had a revolving door membership yet managed to release an EP and three independent (and hard to find) albums before Atlantic records came calling. The band then relocated to Rochester, NY and became local favorites at places like The Penny Arcade. For their major label debut Dirty Looks consisted of Paul Lidel (guitar), Jack Pyers (bass) and Gene Barnett (drums). The resulting album, Cool From The Wire, proved to be one the band's biggest successes and even found its way onto the Billboard charts. In 1990 Gene Barnett left to join Lillian Axe, and a new rhythm section of Brian Perry (bass) and Jim Harris (drums) were recruited for Five Easy Pieces. The group broke up following this release, with Ostergaard forming Rumbledog, Lidel hooking up with Dangerous Toys (and later Broken Teeth) and Perry resurfacing in Bubble. Ostergaard began recording under the Dirty Looks moniker again in 1994 releasing several albums without any information on who was playing on them. The classic "Cool from the Wire" line-up reformed in 2007 to record "Superdeluxe".While working on 2010's I.C.U. album, new Dirty Looks bassist Greg Pianka was stabbed to death in a bar fight but appears on the album posthumously.Henrik Ostergaard, lead singer and frontman for Dirty Looks, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2011 at 9:18 a.m. from natural causes.

Album:

Great CD reissue label FNA Records....reissue of an obscure gem by a band that deserves some attention and is still going strong, namely Dirty Looks. FNA recently reissued the debut, self-titled album by Dirty Looks. With these types of reissue campaigns it is important to recognize that these releases may have limited appeal to fans of the bands from the first time around. Accordingly, it is critical that the label present a quality package to attract potential new fans and to entice buyers and the older fans who may already own the original pressing. Fortunately FNA recognizes this the package is really nice. Good graphics, nice layout, lyrics, photos etc make for a quality package. The debut happens to be a digi-pak. I would have liked to see some liner notes, essay, or maybe some commentary by the band talking about the origins of the album but you can’t have it all.The Dirty Looks debut came out way back in 1984 as an indie release on the Sticky Label and was probably never issued on CD. Included as a nice, little bonus is the incredibly rare and obviously out of print debut 4-track EP, also called Dirty Looks. For 15 tracks clocking at just under an hour it is a good deal.Musically, the band entered the Hard Rock, melodic Metal sweep-stakes quite early and had a few independent releases before getting picked up by a major label and coming to broader attention. This is pretty raw and primitive Hard Rock but you can hear the beginnings of what was to become a very popular and long running band. The songs fall into the 3-5 minute range, fun drinking songs, with some groove, lots of sex and fun, easy lyrics. The vocals of mainstay Henrik Ostergaard have always, in my mind, been one of the major attractions of the band. His unique delivery and vocal phrasing add a dimension to the band that makes them instantly recognizable. Good times sleazy rock ’n’ roll!.It might be pretty hard to find original master tapes that are over a quarter-of-a-century (!) old and remix and re-master them into something better but the label did a good job. The drums sound big and boomy and everything is nice and clear. As a fan from the early days myself, it is a real treat to hear these songs on CD. My old cassettes were getting worn pretty thin! If you are familiar with the band's recent work and want to explore their roots, or perhaps you only heard the few, big-label albums in the late 80s, or just want to discover some great driving, classic melodic rock this is an excellent place to start.

Album:

"Cool From The Wire" remastered by Rock Candy Records. Well here it is, sounding better than ever. There's no denying the power of great rock music to evoke the exact time and place when it was first heard. Indeed, such was the power of "Cool From The Wire" when appeared in the '80s that virtually everyone that knows this record will almost certainly testify to that theory. It is an album that made people sit up and take notice right from the opening salvo to its closing chimes, capturing the essence of a work that still resonates to this very day.Formed in San Francisco in the early Eighties, the band, led by Danish-born frontman, guitarist and songwriter Henrik Ostergaard, resettled in Pennsylvania and recorded a string of independently released albums before being spotted and signed by the powerful Atlantic Records label. With commitment and belief the label teamed the band with seasoned British producer Max Norman (Ozzy Osbourne, Y&T, Coney Hatch) who crafted an exceptionally potent record focusing on catchy hooks, killer riffs, deadly rhythm and Ostergaard’s melodically inclined vocals.Issued in 1988, the album contained a number of stunning tracks including ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off You’, ‘Oh Ruby’, ‘Put A Spell On You’, the earth shattering title track, and the kicking ‘It’s Not The Way You Rock’, which ended up on the soundtrack of 1988's Johnny Be Good movie. With comparisons to Kix, Rose Tattoo, Krokus and of course AC/DC, the album is regarded as one of the most impressive hard rock releases of the late '80s and, deservedly, continues to make its mark. With a fully remastered sound from the master tapes shaped from 24 BIT digital technology, "Cool From The Wire" now sounds sharper and a with greater deep low-end.Dirty Looks should have been huge, and this baby certainly Rocks. One of the best hard rock bands from the '80s you never heard.

Album:

Licencing label X5 Music Group has arranged with Warner Music Group for the release of several Rock artists from their catalog, like this just released DIRTY LOOKS “The Atlantic Albums”, including into one package the two records the band recorded for Atlantic Records: 1988’s “Cool From The Wire” and 1989’s “Turn Of The Screw”.The good thing about these X5 releases – all digital downloads only – is that they take care of the sound quality. While other ‘digital only’ companies just copy the digital master as it is – many times from different sources with horrible volume / gain differences, especially V.A. compilations – X5 Music Group seems to do the right thing, some kind of a ‘mastered for iTunes’.Yes, we have “Cool From The Wire” remastered by Rock Candy, but the sound quality of all the digital files from both albums on this “The Atlantic Albums” is very good. Indeed, this pack sounds great on the iPod.Great ’80s albums, great 2-in-1 compilation.

Album:

Without a doubt, alongside their major label debut ‘Cool From the Wire’, DIRTY LOOKS‘ second album “Turn Of The Screw” finds the band at their finest moment. Rock Candy records did the magic with ‘Dirty Looks’ some years ago, now it’s time for 1989’s “Turn Of The Screw” to be ‘remastered & reloaded‘ in full force.Unknowingly, with ‘Cool From the Wire’ DIRTY LOOKS had crafted one of the era’s greatest albums that although registering with fans and some well-informed critics strangely failed to set the world on fire. Atlantic records however were not disheartened and signalled the go ahead for a follow-up album.Issued in 1989 and titled ‘Turn Of The Screw’, the band moved on to a new producer in John Jansen (Billy Squier, Britny Fox) and set about recording in New York at the world-renowned Power Station studios. The result is a riff-rock packed album with some great and catchy tunes such as ‘Take What Ya Get’, ‘Slammin To The Big Beat’, the title track and anthem ‘Nobody Rides For Free’. It’s another enormous tribute to simple but effective loud and proud hard rock, this time with a much more polished production and that 1989’s glare. Our DIRTY LOOKS favorite album.Dirty Looks formed in San Fransisco in 1984 when Danish-born Henrik Ostergaard, who had tired of playing in a cover band in Pennsylvania arrived to the Bay Area intent on forming his own band and recording original material. The band’s first self-titled album was released by a French label called Axe Killer Records. Apparently disillusioned with the Frisco scene the band relocated back to Pennsylvania in 1986 and recorded a second indie album called ‘In Your Face’.That record and its single ‘Oh Ruby’ got the attention of major labels and in 1987 Dirty Looks signed with Atlantic Records who released the Max Norman produced debut ‘Cool From the Wire’. They got a little airplay on MTV and flirted with the Billboard charts but the album (now a cult classic) was not the success the band and label expected.Dirty Looks soon entered the studio with producer of the moment Beau Hill to record this follow-up “Turn Of The Screw” but were dissatisfied with the results and started over with a new chairman, John Jansen, who had produced Britny Fox’s hit debut the previous year.Dirty Looks were one of several bands of the era (Rhino Bucket, Dangerous Toys, Nevada Beach, etc) that displayed a rather obvious AC/DC influence, but this “Turn Of The Screw” is quite impressive in its own right with a more of the ‘Californian sound’ of the moment (1989).The album opens with the raucous title track ‘Turn Of The Screw’ driven by a hot riff like a mix between Aerosmith and the aforementioned Britny Fox. The song is immaculately put together, very clean yet with a kick ass attitude.Up next the single ‘Nobody Rides For Free’ (one of may favorites) continues with the rockin’ attack but even more catchy. Great verse with a nice singalong line and then a very melodic chorus that rides a groovy riff. After these two first winners you can hear in this album Dirty Looks wanted to inject quite a bit of melody into their riff-driven brand of rock and roll. Those first two songs stand out above the rest but the whole album is good. A hyper track called ‘C’Mon Frenchie’ is followed by the in your face awesomeness of ‘Take What Ya Get’.Another favorite is the slick sleazy rocker called ‘L.A. Anna’ based in a nice groove and a huge chorus. After the little formulaic but anyway effective ‘Love Screams’, Dirty Looks deliver the requisite very good ballad ‘Go Away’ (brings to mind CINDERELLA), and for the end we have the killer riff-rocker called ‘Have Some Balls’, hot n’ rockin’.Dirty Looks “Turn Of The Screw” remains unheard by many ’80s hard rock aficionados and this is your opportunity to discover a very good, ballsy yet polished piece of rock ‘n roll. A punchy, energetic and melodic groovy album.

Album:

To complete DIRTY LOOKS ’80s underrated albums, here’s the band third indie album ”I Want More” from 1987 before being signed by major labal Atlantic originally released on the band’s own Sticky Records, and finally released on CD for the first time by FnA Records including bonus tracks, a release approved by vocalist Henrik Ostergaard before his untimely death. After two solid, rocking albums DIRTY LOOKS built a name for themselves and a respectable following. Then in 1987, the band forged forward with the release of their third full length album, ‘I Want More…’ and more is what the band would get.The single ‘Oh Ruby’ got the attention of major radio station and received heavy airplay. Major labels started calling: EMI, Elecktra, Chrysallis, and Atlantic all put in their bids – Atlantic won… and the rest is history as they would say. Dirty Looks saw MTV Airplay, worldwide tours, major recording budgets, and an era that ushered Hard Rock into the mainstream.Originally out in 1987 ”I Want More” was ultimately the album that got the band noticed to a larger audience and the major label deal with Atlantic. In fact six of the ten cuts made it onto ‘Cool From The Wire’, so there is quite a bit of overlap.Considering the lyrical content of the lead-off track ‘Fuck you…I Want More’ it is not surprising that that song didn’t make the cut for the major label! The treat on this one is for fans to hear the subtle differences in production and delivery between the now familiar songs. The other major plus are the other songs exclusive to this album and the two unreleased tracks into this reissue in the form of the demos ‘Smell The Gasoline’ and ‘Narcissist’.The sound quality is fine but taken from cassette, as not only the master was lost, the band / Ostergaard doesn’t even has a vinyl LP pressing as source. If you are new to the band this might be the reissue to start with, it has many songs that later became the ‘classics’ of the Dirty Look’s catalogue and the band have really started to solidify their signature style, on this, their third album.Boozy ballads, rumbling rockers, all topped off by Henrik’s unique and awesome delivery this band should have been bigger. This FnA release of “I Want More” is out of print, with copies being sold for around $200.

Album:

Second full-length album. They just wanted to rock! So when Erie, Pennsylvania cover band Crossfire called it a day, Danish born vocalist/guitarist, Henrik Ostergaard, and fellow Crossfire bassist Jimmy Chartley packed up and headed to the west coast (San Francisco to be exact)...and Dirty Looks was born. With a small self-titled ep already under their belt, Dirty Looks would release its first full length album of the same name in 1984 on Sticky Records. Axe Killer Records (France) would pick up this album a year later and give it a bigger production. Meanwhile, back in the states, bands like Quiet Riot, Motley Crue, and Ratt were putting a very public face on hard rock music. So it was really no wonder why local radio stations were spinning Dirty Looks, especially with the lofty comparisons to Bon Scott and AC/DC. However, trials and tribulations would eventually cause the band to break-up and head back to Pennsylvania. Dirty Looks would eventually regroup with the addition of bassist Jack Pyers. The band with the core duo of Henrik and Jack would then release two more independently produced albums in the next two years. 1986 saw the release of INYOURFACE which garnered a lot of airplay on the reputable Z-Rock. Dirty Looks stock was rising! Then in 1987, the band forged forward with the release of their third full length album, I Want More...and more is what the band would get. The Major labels started calling: EMI, Elecktra, Chrysallis, and Atlantic all put in their bids; and Atlantic won...and the rest is history as they would say. Dirty Looks saw MTV Airplay, worldwide tours, major recording budgets, and an era that ushered Hard Rock/Heavy Metal into the mainstream. In 2009, FnA Records found itself in the fortunate position to release three uber-rare gems on CD for the first time ever...and to a worldwide audience. Make sure you pick up remastered versions of the first 3 indie Dirty Looks CD's: Dirty Looks - Dirty Looks w/ 1984 EP, In Your Face, and I Want More.
