Bio:

Autograph began in late 1983 originally as a solo project for singer, songwriter & guitarist Steve Plunkett, who had recently left the band Silver Condor. Plunkett then began playing and recording his own material with a group of his musician friends, most of whom had previously played with him in other bands. On lead guitar was Steve Lynch, who had played with Plunkett in the band Looker.Bassist Randy Rand knew Plunkett from their days together in Wolfgang, a prominent club band in Pasadena, California that has been described as a local legend, and of which Kevin Dubrow (lead singer of Quiet Riot) once said, "They smoked us all... they got a better response than us and Van Halen".Keyboardist Steve Isham, who had also earlier played with mutual acquaintance Holly Penfield, was brought in to give the fledgling band a more modern sound.Drummer Keni Richards, an old bandmate with Plunkett from John Doe rounded out the band's lineup. Richards' friendship with Van Halen lead singer David Lee Roth was instrumental in leading to Autograph's big break the following year.Quickly, this group of musicians began playing and recording together, taking the form of an actual band. Plunkett chose the name "Autograph" for the band, having been inspired by hearing Def Leppard's similarly titled song, "Photograph," on the radio. They recorded their first rough demos in late 1983, but played them only for a few close friends. One of these friends was Andy Johns, a famous record producer who Steve Plunkett had met while helping singer Joe Cerisano produce Silver Condor's second album Trouble At Home. Johns invited the band to re-record and upgrade those demos at the world-famous Record Plant Studios for free under his guidance. Keni Richards then played the demo for Roth, who subsequently invited the band to open for Van Halen on their 1984 tour. The band rose to prominence opening for Van Halen, ultimately playing 48 shows, an act of distinction for an unsigned band. Due to their rising popularity, Autograph soon signed a contract with RCA Records following a performance at Madison Square Garden in New York City in late 1984.The band’s debut album, Sign In Please, was completed and released in October of that year, but did not make an appearance on any record charts until January 1985. The album contains the band’s only major hit and now signature song, "Turn Up the Radio." The song itself was one of the last ones recorded for the album, and the band members were initially very lukewarm toward it. However, the tune would become a top-30 hit, pushing album sales past the gold album mark (500,000 copies sold). The album later went platinum. The song was featured in an episode of "Miami Vice" (entitled "Little Prince") and was also leased out to numerous other films, even further elevating the song's popularity. Lynch's guitar work in "Turn Up The Radio", featuring a distinctive two-handed, fretboard-tapping technique, won him the "Guitar Solo of the Year" award from Guitar Player magazine in 1985."Send Her to Me" was released as a follow-up single, though its success paled in comparison to the massive first hit. Other songs from the Sign in Please album, "My Girlfriend's Boyfriend Isn't Me" and "Deep End," along with "Take No Prisoners," which would soon appear on the band's follow-up album, were featured in the 1985 film Secret Admirer, starring C. Thomas Howell, Kelly Preston, Corey Haim, Lori Loughlin and Casey Siemaszko. The band also recorded a song titled "You Can't Hide From the Beast Inside" for the film Fright Night.A second album, That’s the Stuff, was quickly recorded and released in the fall of 1985, and the group went on tour in support of several other bands, including Mötley Crüe and Heart.Although record sales were disappointing in comparison to their first album, it still achieved near gold status. Supported by the single, "Blondes in Black Cars" and the title track, a minor-hit, it eventually peaked at No. 92 on the Billboard album charts.[2] The band then recorded a song titled "Winning Is Everything" for the film Youngblood.Autograph recorded a third album which took longer to record than the other two combined. Loud and Clear was released in the spring of 1987. The title song featured a music video with Ozzy Osbourne and Vince Neil of Mötley Crüe as extras. The band also made three appearances on "Headbangers Ball" in support of the album. In October, the band made a cameo in the film Like Father, Like Son, starring Dudley Moore and Kirk Cameron. The first song featured was "Dance all Night," which played briefly, and then they performed the song "She Never Looked That Good for Me" for the film, appearing in a brief cameo as themselves. Despite all three of these songs being released as singles, the album was not a big success, mostly due to lackluster support from the label. The original members have gotten back together for a reunion. Due to Plunkett not being interested in doing the reunion, they have replaced him with Jailhouse, Flood, 1RKO and solo artist singer/songwriter/guitar player Simon Daniels. The band has been rehearsing and have an interview on YouTube conducted by rock journalist Lucas H Gordon and Guitar World as to what their many plans are for the future. The band played the Monsters of Rock Cruise, M3 Rock Festival, Firefest along with other festivals and Worldwide touring before going to the studio to cut a new Album in 2014.On January 15, 2015 they released their first single from their new album, "You Are Us, We Are You."On April 21st, 2015 they released their 2nd single "I lost my mind in America."Shows and festivals Worldwide are booked solid for 2015 and beyond.

Album:

AUTOGRAPH's first album Sign In Please contained a surprise hit single, the infectious ‘Turn Up The Radio’, whilst a sell out tour supporting Van Halen elevated them into the upper echelons of the Eighties hard rock elite. Things were looking more than good. However, when a Stateside tour supporting Motley Crue was secured, RCA, their record label, hit the panic button, insisting that in order to keep momentum rocketing the band should get back into the studio and cut a follow up album as quickly as humanly possible. It was inevitable that things began to slide; a rushed choice of producer, a lack of pre-production time and a touring deadline that was looming ever closer. Amazingly, when the album was released its cover had to be changed due to bungled copyright issues. And if that wasn’t enough, in order to combat the appearance of Russian band Avtograf (pronounced Autograph), RCA thought it might be a good idea for Autograph to record a cover of Grand Funk Railroad’s classic ‘We’re An American Band’ adding it to the record half way through the campaign.Under any other circumstance this set of events might have spelled disaster but for Autograph it was just a one more river to cross and one more hurdle to jump."That’s The Stuff", despite all the pressures baring down on them, was hailed as another solid slice of prime-time American melodic hard rock, big on hooks and crammed with some of the best guitar playing that Steve Lynch ever recorded.Opening with the the title cut filled with the same happy smiling in your face rock and roll as the debut album and take no prisoners attitude, has the echo kind of backing vocals that made Dokken and Ratt famous.Blonde's In Black Cars' was the hit off this one, it's actually quite good, sure it didn't go as far as 'Turn Up The Radio' but that kind of song is really once in a lifetime. 'You'll Get Over It' is a beautiful love song (mid-tempo, not really a ballad), 'Crazy World' is fun and rocking, in the Night Ranger vein. The stand out track on this album is 'Changing Hands' a beautiful ballad that should have been released as a single, sounds very much like Def Leppard from the Hysteria period. 'Hammerhead' shows that is among the best, while 'Built For Speed' and 'Paint This Town' are cool melodic hard rockers with nice hooks. This Rock Candy remaster includes the bonus 'We're An American Band', a cover done in a very hair metal way."That’s The Stuff" is another solid album from Autograph, plenty of hooky rockers and a feel-good vibe.Rock Candy's chief engineer Jon Astley has enhanced the bass lines (slightly buried in the original) and now with this fresh remaster the record sounds punchier, more vibrant.

Album:

Between 1984 - 1987, L.A. quintet AUTOGRAPH released a string of successful records, all of them doing their bit to give melodic hard rock a good name. However, it's their third outing that is widely regarded as the pick of the pack... "Loud & Clear" is one of the all time great albums of the '80s US scene, ably produced by studio legend Andy Johns.Fully digitally remastered by Rock Candy Records, "Loud & Clear" sounds better than ever.In style, "Loud and Clear" is very similar to Autograph's previous albums, but we have a stronger, mature songwriting, arrangements, musicianship and production. It's an upbeat, feel-good party rock album with odes to hot girls, loud parties and rocking all nite. Catchy hooks, great melodies and just enough keyboards are all abundant on "Loud & Clear", and Steve Plunkett does another knockout job on vocals. There really isn't a Turn Up the Radio style hit on this album, but "Dance All Night" and "Just Got Back From Heaven" should have been solid radio hits at the time, and "More Than a Million Times" should have been huge. It's a brilliant, "soundtrack ready" melodic rocker. As good as it is, "Loud and Clear" was Autograph's least successful album, and ended up being their last work as a band, with Plunkett using the moniker but in fact being a solo artist. If you're a fan of the second half if the '80s glossy melodic rock sound, "Loud & Clear" is a 'can't miss' album from one of the era's more unfairly overlooked bands. This Rock Candy remaster sounds million bucks.

Album:

A must have release Remastered & Reloaded by Rock Candy Records is without a doubt "Sign In Please", the awesome debut album by American melodic hard rockers AUTOGRAPH.Emerging in the early Eighties, unsigned at the time, Autograph were hand picked by Van Halen to open a mammoth North American concert trek – an accomplishment that quickly led to their inking with industry giant RCA Records and an ensuing hit single, the energetic and infectious ‘Turn Up The Radio’ which made the US top 30 in the same year.Feted and championed by the hard rock cognoscenti (supporters included Motley Crue and Ozzy Osbourne) this Los Angeles based quintet made all the right noises by packing both melody and muscle into their music; highly valuable commodities that found Autograph reaching a level of success that would see them out perform most of the competition.‘Sign In Please’ was, then, the band's highly praised debut album, unleashing a beast of significant fire power and songs that would stand not only the test of time but would also improve with age including the classic hit single ‘Turn Up The Radio’.Taped by renowned British producer Neil Kernon (Queensryche, Dokken, etc) the album exudes Class-A melodic hard rock all the way with big hooks and solid riffs.'Send Her to Me' (another hit), 'My Girlfriend's Boyfriend Isn't Me', 'Thrill Of Love', 'All I'm Gonna Take', all are anthemic commercial rockers in the best 80s US tradition.Definitely one of the greatest albums from the '80s LA scene, Autograph's "Sign In Please" claims a place in your collection, and this Rock Candy 24-bit remastering from original source tapes is the way to do it.4,000 word story of the making of the album by Pail Suter and exclusive interview with singer / songwriter Steve Plunkett, previously unpublished photos, one bonus track, all spread out over a super 16 page full colour booklet.

Album:

None would have given a dime for '80s platinum-selling Californians AUTOGARPH return few years ago. But a couple years ago, founding member guitarist Steve Lynch and bassist Randy Rand decided give the a band a new life. Both approached original singer Steve Plunkett about the reunion, but he is a music business man now and declined.Soon Jailhouse singer Simon Daniels took the frontman position, and Autograph released their first new song in over 25 years, "You Are Us, We Are You", some months ago.Now Autograph are presenting "I Lost My Mind in America", their new single. Both songs (there's a full album in the making) are really promising. The tracks got that typical catchy choruses and guitar riffs that made Autograph big.New singer Simon Daniels owns a hard-edged, bluesy voice that fits the new Autograph really well, and the band as a whole feels energized. To US residents, with "I Lost My Mind in America" Autograph say: "Happy 4th of July everyone!"And for the rest of the fans of this type of classic melodic hard rock; "Stay tuned, there's more Autograph in the making!"

Album:

When I say that this is unexpectedly good I mean no disrespect, but I really wasn’t expecting this sort of quality recording from a band largely unknown outside of the US and on their third reunion, this time without former main man Steve Plunkett. But the truth is that original guitarist and bassist Steve lynch and Randy Rand have made some beautiful noise here with new vocalist Simon Daniels and sticksman Marc Wieland after a few years hitting the Festival circuit stateside. As openers go title track ‘Get Off Your Ass’ might just be the best song Autograph has recorded, sure those that grew up with iconic tunes like ‘Turn Up the Radio’, ‘Friday’, ‘Send Her to Me’, ‘Just Got Back From Heaven’ and my personal favourite ‘She Never Looked That Good For Me’ might disagree, but hell it’s definitely up there if you can bear to put aside for a minute your teenage memories that so often colour our appreciation of the music of our youth.More remarkable though is that this is an album that doesn’t stop there and though it includes five tracks from 2016’s heavier, keyboardless ‘Louder’ EP including the live version of the obligatory ‘Turn Up the Radio’ the other five new tracks here all rock considerably. Those familiar with the EP will know that, though edgier and harder edged than their eighties outings it still retained that trademark sound and had some great cuts, none better perhaps than ‘You Are Us, We Are You’ and the spectacularly catchy AOR anthem ‘I Lost my Mind in America’ which would have given vintage Foreigner a run for their money. On to the new stuff then: the soaring ballad ‘All I Own’ more than passes muster, whilst ‘Meet Me Half Way’ swings and rocks with the best of them before ‘All Emotions’ hits the ground running, sweeping you up in a sweet melodic chorus that offsets the grit of the verse and ‘Ready to Get Down’ gets a new party started. This indeed is something special. The album of course had to end with that song and it is of course a roaring live rendition showcasing the great pipes of new vocalist Simon Daniels. The best thing about ‘Get Off Your Ass’ though is that here it’s just another great song.

Album:

Demos and tracks from their never-released fourth album.Missing Pieces is the fourth studio album by Autograph. It was released initially in 1997 on the Pavement Music label, then re-released in both 2002 and 2004 by Crash Music, Inc.The material was recorded for an album intended for a 1989 release, but the project was abandoned and the group disbanded.Rare, posthumously released merchandise from a rather successful Eighties band in the USA that never got beyond the status of an insider tip in this country - for the common Central European, AUTOGRAPH's heavy pop rock probably always sounded a bit too American. Yet Steve Plunkett and his band were well on the way to at least partially satisfying the traditionally more down-to-earth sounds of the old world, as some of the songs on this fourth album emphatically demonstrate. With titles like 'Heartattack' or 'Dead End Street', the smack factor was by no means neglected - it's just a pity that the follow-up to the respectable "Loud'n'Clear" album ('87) was never produced properly, but only in demo form, and that it will hardly be possible to recruit a new audience today. Friends of the early days should not disdain this interesting collection of rare recordings (including the original version of the US hit 'Turn Up The Radio' and the original version of 'Angel In Black', known from the Bangalore Choir One-Off).

Line-Up:

Steve Plunkett - lead vocals, guitar

Album:

On January 31, 2022, Frontiers Music Srl made an announcement welcoming the legendary 80s hard rockers Autograph to the label's roster. The band - at the time featuring vocalist Simon Daniels, guitarist Jimi Bell, bassist Randy Rand and drummer Marc Wieland - was close to wrapping up work on the brand new studio album "Beyond", which the label had slated for release later in the year. Just past mid-April 2022, Randy delivered the final masters and artwork for "Beyond" and was sorting out plans for the release with the label when he received some news about his health. And then, shockingly, just a few days later (April 26, 2022) Randy Rand, a founding member of the band, passed away. Before his untimely passing, he shared with his bandmates that if something was to happen to him before the release plans were finalized, he wanted them to release "Beyond", his last recorded work. And so, with bittersweet emotions, Frontiers Music Srl announces the forthcoming release of Autograph's new studio album "Beyond", the last album to feature founding member and bassist Randy Rand.Autograph, whose hit "Turn Up The Radio" was a staple of the hard rock soundtrack of the 80s, disbanded in 1989, but in 2011, founding members bassist Randy Rand and guitarist Steve Lynch decided to meet up at the NAMM show in Anaheim, CA. They rekindled their friendship first before even thinking about a musical reunion. With their personal relationship rebuilt, they made a collective decision to play again. "We approached our original singer Steve Plunkett about a reunion", recalled Rand. "He didn't have the time to join the band again due to his busy schedule. He did give us his blessing to move forward though and that was important. We missed our fans. This is for them."Fully embracing the future, the remaining members began a search for a new singer. They discovered some videos of singer, guitarist & songwriter Simon Daniels (Jailhouse, Flood, 1RKO) on YouTube and instantly, they sensed a connection and knew that he was the right fit for the band. "He was perfect to front Autograph", smiled Rand. "His hard-edged, bluesy voice and massive riffing sharpen our edge. He's given us new energy and he impressed us immediately. We all had a euphoric feeling after the first rehearsal", Rand added.Rand said that during his long-lived career, he had only loved playing with two drummers. One is the great late Randy Castillo and then there is Autograph's new drummer Marc Wieland. As Rand put it: "We're heavier than before. At the same time, the melodic vocals and catchy hooks are still an integral part of our sound."In 2019, Lynch decided to leave the group to pursue different musical styles and was replaced by international monster shredder guitarist Jimi Bell (House Of Lords). The band didn't skip a beat and went on to record a new album, "Beyond", with this line-up before Rand's untimely passing.Autograph, the platinum-selling Southern California hard rock band who gave the world the ubiquitous hit "Turn Up The Radio", has released seminal albums such as "Sign In Please" (1984), "That’s The Stuff" (1985) and "Loud And Clear" (1987). Over the course of their career, they have played shows with everybody from Mötley Crüe and Ronnie James Dio to Van Halen and Aerosmith. Successfully touring again since the beginning of 2014, Autograph has strived and shined at arenas, casinos, major music festivals such as M3, Monsters of Rock Cruise, The Moondance Jam, 80s in the Park, Grand Rock Tember, Cat Club Festival at Irvine Meadows and Firefest UK, among others. In 2017, Autograph released a new album on ex-Megadeth member David Ellefson's EMP Label Group, hitting # 21 on the Billboard Classic Rock Sales Chart, as well as placing two new singles on the top 10 Hard Rock Mediabase Radio Chart. The band will release the new studio album "Beyond" via Frontiers Music Srl in 2022. It is the last album to feature founding member and bassist Randy Rand.
