Bio:

Saigon Kick is an American rock band from Miami, Florida, that formed in 1988.Saigon Kick was formed by lead vocalist Matt Kramer and guitarist Jason Bieler along with bassist Tom Defile and drummer Phil Varone. They gained a following on the local club scene and generated enough of a buzz to be signed to Third Stone records in 1990 and release their first album in 1991. They toured at length but the album only made a marginal national showing. They went immediately back into the studio to record their second album, The Lizard which was released in 1992. The album spawned the band's biggest hit single, "Love Is on the Way", which garnered initial airplay on South Florida's WSHE. Just before touring for the album commenced, bassist Tom DeFile was fired. He was replaced by ex-Cold Sweat bassist Chris McLernon. They toured from summer 1992 to spring 1993, enjoying gold status sales for The Lizard.Looking to continue their momentum, the band quickly returned to Sweden to record their third album Water in 1993. During recording, Matt Kramer became disgruntled with the direction that the band was heading both musically and stylistically. Kramer also argued that there were financial disputes within the band and tensions reached a boiling point. He officially left the band mid-session and returned to Florida. With Kramer gone, Bieler decided to take over all of the vocal duties in addition to playing guitar on the album. Finishing touches were added to the album at sessions in Tampa, Florida. Guitarist Pete Dembrowski was hired in time for the band's fall 1993 tour to support the new album. Water sold significantly less than the previous album, and Atlantic decided to drop the band in 1994.The band signed to the CMC International label in 1995, and the lineup of Bieler, McLernon, Varone, and Dembrowski released their fourth album Devil in the Details that same year. Saigon Kick then toured to large success globally, particularly in South East Asia, but they never managed to build on the success of The Lizard in the USA.In July 1997, the band attempted a reunion with Matt Kramer on lead vocals. Phil Varone had left the band and was replaced by drummer Ricky Sanders. A new song was recorded with this line-up called "Dizzy's Vine" which was released on Moments from the Fringe, a compilation album of demos and rare tracks. The reunion was quite short lived however, and Bieler left after two live shows in their home state of Florida, effectively ending the band.Bieler, Dembrowski, and Sanders would record the final Saigon Kick album, Bastards for release in the Far East in 1999. The three then decided to retire the Saigon Kick name and reorganize as Super TransAtlantic. In 2000, original members Kramer, Varone, and DeFile resurrected the Saigon Kick name for a short tour. Jason Bieler, being involved with Super TransAtlantic and wanting no part of a reunion, was replaced by DeFile's former Left For Dead band mate Jeff Blando on guitar. After the tour, the members scattered and Saigon Kick were considered finished.Bieler, Dembrowski, and Sanders, along with bassist Pat Badger of Extreme, formed Super TransAtlantic and released the band's only album Shuttlecock in 2000. They also appear on the soundtrack to the film American Pie with the song "Super Down".Matt Kramer released his debut solo album titled War & Peas on September 11, 2002 through Lascivious Records. He also published his debut book of poetry, An American Profit, on October 31, 2007 through Lascivious Books. Kramer has 3 additional books finished and slated for release in the future.Phil Varone joined Skid Row bassist Rachel Bolans side project Prunella Scales in 1997 and recorded their album Dressing Up The Idiot. He then joined Skid Row in 2000 and can be heard on the band's album Thickskin. Varone left Skid Row in 2003, citing his ongoing battle with cocaine addiction and his need to turn his life around. Afterwards, he began promoting his movie Waking up Dead in which a film crew chronicled several years of his life as a rock star, and the behind the scenes ups and downs that come with it. His focus is no longer primarily music, and up until the summer of 2010, he was booking and hosting stand-up comedy shows in Los Angeles. In the Fall of 2010, Varone moved to Las Vegas and directs a video series for Vivid Entertainment. He also has a signature adult toy line released by California Exotics Novelties.Chris McLernon and Ricky Sanders teamed up to form Two Heads Music, working in television, film and advertising music production.Jason Bieler and his brother Aaron now own a recording studio and record label in South Florida called Bieler Bros. Records.Ricky Sanders is currently the touring drummer for former Bad Company lead singer Brian Howe.Beginning in 2011, Jason Bieler began a new studio-only project named Owl Stretching. It is an ongoing project featuring former Saigon Kick members Rick Sanders and Chris McLernon among others. Several songs are available for download on the band's official website and iTunes. On 21 September 2012, via the official Saigon Kick page on Facebook, the following message was posted: "Saigon Kick will be reuniting with all of the original members Matt Kramer, Phil Varone, Jason Bieler, Tom Defile and Chris McLernon. Dates to be announced shortly." The band has discussed the possibility of new material. On 25 February 2013, via the official Saigon Kick page on Facebook, they announced that Tom Defile was no longer involved with the reunion."After the official Saigon Kick reunion announcement and rehearsals, we regret to announce that Tom Defile will not be continuing with the band. Tom and Saigon Kick amicably decided this is best for both parties and we wish him nothing but success in his future endeavors."-Tom Defile.A string of concerts were played in March / April 2013 in Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale, St. Petersburg, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and New York City.An additional pair of shows were announced for December 2014 - in Las Vegas and St. Petersburg. These shows are significant in the band's history as they saw a return the return of original bassist, Tom Defile. The Las Vegas concert was the first performance by all four of Saigon Kick's original lineup in 22 years.

Album:

From the opening of "New World", one is fully aware that they are listening to a different brand of hair metal. While most people will remember Saigon Kick fully for their hit ballad "Love Is On The Way", the band's self-titled debut is the place to start. This is where Saigon Kick started to develop the sound that they became best known for. While The Lizard is a decent album as well, it relies too heavily on gimmicks, including loopy instrumentals and sentimental ballads to gain sales. This album has none of that and succeeds in just about everything it tries. Matt Kramer's lyrics, which can veer from serious ("Coming Home" and "Down By The Ocean") to quite silly ("What Do You Do") help to serve the album in more ways than one. The music is eclectic as hell but again, it's only more of a drawing point for the band. And let's not forget the songs, most of which still hold up a whopping eighteen years later; from "My Life" and "Colors" to the closing finale of "I.C.U." the band were more than capable of some kick-ass material. The fact that they are only known for a damn power ballad is more than a shame but what can you do now. The band is split into four separate factions, most of the hatred and acrimony pointed at guitarist, keyboardist, vocalist, songwriter and producer Jason Bieler clearly shows that a classic reunion will never happen, so just sit back and enjoy the music!

Album:

First off, if you’re going to write off Saigon Kick because of their uber cheesy ballad “Love Is On The Way”, stick around. You just may learn something. Anyways, Saigon Kick was a band that pretty much defied any kind of label. Were they metal? Were they alternative? Were they alternative metal? Either way, Saigon Kick managed to put out one of my all time favorite albums “The Lizard” and it was unlike anything I had been listening to. Much like bands like Animal Bag and Collision, Saigon Kick was taking elements of heavy metal music, 60’s Beatles like harmonies and modern (at the time) alternative hard rock and creating a hybrid of music that was all their own.“The Lizard” was the band’s 2nd album and much like their debut, what captured me was the songwriting and the over all sound of the album. The album is very thick sounding and has much better vibe than the thin, tinny sound of it’s predecessor. Lead Singer Matt Kramer has such an amazing voice that at times sounds like a cross between Jim Morrison and Perry Farrell. The harmonies that Kramer and guitarist Jason Bieler are absolutely amazing and it really creates a great dynamic. The songs on “The Lizard” cover a lot of ground. Songs like “Hostile Youth”, “Freedom” and “Body Bags” cover the melodic hard rock side of things while “Peppermint Tribe” and “My Dog” are pretty much acid inspired psychedelic metal. As much as I hate the ballad “Love Is On The Way”, the album’s other ballad “All I Want” is a bit on the cheesy side but it’s a beautiful song and I totally appreciate it more now than back then. The album closes out with a novelty song “Chanel” which showed the band’s since of humor and it’s actually a really fun song to listen to.“The Lizard” is an album that unfortunately committed suicide with “Love Is On The Way.” If that song hadn’t been on the album, the band would never have had a hit song but at the same time, if it wasn’t on there maybe more metal fans would be open to giving this amazing album a listen. Song for song “The Lizard” is a really awesome collection of melodically beautiful songs with some stellar playing and arranging. The album sounds really well thought out and has a flow that makes it very easy to listen to. Before writing this one off give this one a listen. You just may find that this band can surprise the hell out of you.

Album:

Rock Candy specialists have just 'Remastered & Reloaded' all three SAIGON KICK albums with bonus tracks. First and self-titled debut "Saigon Kick" is one of the best rock albums appeared at the beginning of the '90s.During the early Nineties there were an enormous amount of hard rock bands that, although extremely talented, suffered front the shifting sands of time and taste, with the media almost exclusively focused on the sounds of Seattle, and, in particular, the emerging grunge movement. It was this obsession with a new trend that resulted in a number of perfectly serviceable groups being consciously sidelined.Saigon Kick was one such example. Formed in Florida during the late '80s, this storming four man unit, led by vocalist Matt Kramer and guitarist Jason Bieler, crafted a particularly potent brand of hard rock that relied as much on power pop as it did on heavy riffs. It was an interesting twist on traditional rock, edgy but melodic, poppy at places but powerful, always taking care to detail. There was also a perceptible psychedelic tinge to the arrangements helping the band to rise above the standard competition by a considerable margin.Produced by Michael Wagener (Skid Row, Extreme, Ozzy Osbourne), and released on Atlantic Records (via Michael Douglas’s Third Stone imprint), the album had been taped at a frantic pace in Los Angeles, featuring the great Jeff Scott Soto providing backing vocals.Released in 1991 it sold well and quickly established the band as exciting contenders. The album contains a number of instantly catchy tracks, including the infectious ‘What You Say’ (quite strongly aired at MTV), the fun ‘Down By The Ocean’, power ballad ‘Love Of God’, or the heavier ‘Coming Home’.It was an impressive enough debut to warrant Atlantic records making a commitment to album number two.Not only "Saigon Kick" is one of the best rock rock albums from 1991, but also one of the most consistent which marvelously has stand the test of time. This band had it all; very inspired songwriting, solid musicianship, a strong lead vocalist and some amazing chops from guitarist Jason Bieler. While the songs are more elaborated than the typical album from the genre / era, expert Michael Wagener keep things always catchy and melodic, providing a crisp production sound. This Rock Candy fresh remaster is truly excellent, and the reissue includes 2 rare, hard to find B-side as bonus tracks.

Digitally remastered deluxe edition includes 12 page full color booklet with 3,500 word essay, enhanced artwork with unpublished photos and new interview. In the not too distant past, record companies would sign artists and let them develop over a period of time. A good case in point was the development of Saigon Kick.Rock Candy reissue specialists have just 'Remastered & Reloaded' all three SAIGON KICK albums with bonus tracks. "The Lizard" is the band's second effort, perhaps their most complete record and one from the early '90s US melodic hard rock scene you need to own.Listed by Rolling Stone Magazine among the '50 Greatest Hair Metal Albums Of All Time', "The Lizard" is in fact much more than that, plenty of elaborated arrangements and killer hooks. In the not too distant past, record companies would signs artists and let them develop over a period of time. A good case in point was Saigon Kick.Their debut album was greeted with positive reviews and sold a healthy amount of copies, giving Atlantic Records the confidence to push ahead and sanction a well-supported sophomore album, happy in the knowledge that the band was on an upwards trajectory. With this kind of support, the Saigon Kick relished the opportunity to craft another record, an album that would show a refinement of their sound and style. This time around the emphasis was on finely honed songs, with far more mature arrangements, and memorable riffs and harmonies. The band was perceived as operating in the melodic hard rock zone, which was quickly becoming obsolete for the music industry in the face of the developing grunge revolution. But, like such fellow comrades as Skid Row, Love/Hate and Extreme, they managed to inject a degree of excitement into their music that actually gave them an edge over the fading late-Eighties hard rock scene.Originally issued in 1992, produced by band leader Jason Bieler and recorded in Sweden, "The Lizard" contents easily eclipsed the quality of their debut album, showcasing a band with a much broader palate, focusing on sharp riffs and melodic hooks. This approach was emphasised by the surprise hit single "Love Is On The Way", hot at MTV and reaching #12 in the charts, a track that not only upped the band’s profile but also helped the album achieve gold status.‘Love Is On The Way’ is a terrific ballad, however, not very indicative of the band’s overall sound. With "The Lizard" Saigon Kick became one of my favorite bands from the era because the guitar work is in your face and strong like it should be in a Rock album. You can’t help but take notice to the monster riffs and screaming solos from Jason Bieler.Style-wise, "The Lizard" screams Rock through every song, and goes through every level of the music, varied, always interesting, and manages to avoid clichés which in and of itself is reason enough to place Saigon Kick ahead of other pretenders in the music scene.Production is incredible, the sound full and rich, and the vocal harmonies excellent. The first track, the sinister instrumental "Cruelty," starts the disc off followed by a faltering, fabulous chugging riff in "Hostile Youth." The third and fourth tracks "Feel The Same Way" and "Freedom" each has the heavy guitar and melodic vocals that make the band such a treat and separates them from other hard rock bands.“All Alright” deliver crushing Skid Row-esque metal riffage, same with the title-track "The Lizard" but here blended with off-kilter harmonies for great effect. The light-speed tempo of "My Dog" gives way to the twisted "Peppermint Tribe" which picks up the pace with a machine gun riff and clever lyrics. And of course there's the wonderful "Love Is On The Way", one of my favorite Rock ballads ever. This single nearly made it into the Top 10 and is the band's defining moment of national US recognition. As a slow number the tune makes an impact because it features a pensive mood that avoids the traps of standard power ballads."The Lizard" is a terrific album. The daring, eclectic nature of the songwriting and adventuresome spirit makes Saigon Kick a remarkable band - it's a shame that they never really got the attention it deserved.Their sound is not to be and shouldn't be compared to any other band from the era. They were unique. This Rock Candy remaster is excellent, providing a crystal clear definition to an already pristine production.

Album:

Rock Candy specialists have just 'Remastered & Reloaded' all three SAIGON KICK albums with bonus tracks."Water" is Saigon Kick's third album, their first to feature guitarist Jason Bieler on lead vocals, and presenting new bassist Chris McLernon.Saigon Kick's fortunes were radically reshaped with the release of their second album, ‘The Lizard’ and it contained the hit single ‘Love Is On The Way’. It was a track that made them MTV stars, helping to achieve a gold album. This was a major coup for this much-loved Florida four piece that had been signed to Atlantic Records via the imprint Third Stone, a company owned by Hollywood A-Lister Michael Douglas. However, despite these achievements, all was not well within the band’s ranks. By 1992, bassist Tom DeFile and vocalist Matt Kramer had left the group. Kramer had clashed with main songwriter Jason Bieler and it was mutually agreed that the only way to solve the problem was for Matt to depart. Not surprisingly this move left the label somewhat confused as the project was set to move to another level of success. As with the previous record, it was agreed that Bieler could not only self-produce and record mainly in Sweden, but also take on the role as lead vocalist. It was a brave move and not one without reservations from various interested parties.Issued in 1993, "Water" was actually another comprehensive statement of intent. It signalled a move towards experimentation but the original framework was still intact.Hard riffing but melodic tracks, such as ‘One Step Closer’ and ‘Torture’ nestled comfortably with such wide screen melodic rock / pop psych fare as ‘Sgt. Steve’, ‘Close To You’ and ‘Fields Of Rape’.Oh, and look out for a superb version of Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’.A very solid, rocking album in its own right, "Water" is the third and final major label album from this brilliant Florida based band, fully digitally remastered for the first time by Rock Candy including a bonus track.
