Bio:

Roxx Gang was an American glam-metal band formed in 1982 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Auditions and rehearsals were held at Rockin' Studio 66, a local rehearsal/recording studio owned by area musician, Mike Abdishi. The band garnered record company attention in 1987 with its Love 'Em and Leave 'Em demo. The band recorded its debut album Things You've Never Done Before (1988) on Virgin Records from which it released two singles "No Easy Way Out" and "Scratch My Back" with the lineup now consisting of Steele, Jeff Taylor Blanchard (guitar), Wade Hayes (guitar), Roby "Strychnine" Strine (bass), and David James Blackshire (drums). It was produced by Beau Hill and went on to sell a quarter million copies worldwide. This version of the band broke up in 1991 because of infighting and record company issues. Steele then formed a new version of the band along with Roby Strine, guitarist Dallas Perkins and professional session/touring drummer Andy James from NYC. Years later drummer Tommy Weder and guitarist Stacey Blades replaced James and Perkins. Strine left in 1994 and was replaced by Dorian Sage. The band released the album The Voodoo You Love, its first album since Things You've Never Done Before, and went on to release several more albums in the late 1990s. The band added guitarist Jeff Vitolo and bassist Vinnie Granese replaced Sage. Soon after Roxx Gang created a blues/rock alter-ego The Mojo Gurus. Blades left citing "musical differences" after which evolution into The Mojo Gurus became permanent. In 2006, two of its songs off of the Things You've Never Done Before album, "Ball 'N Chain" and "No Easy Way Out" were featured in the THQ action-adventury video game Saints Row.

Album:

The semi-famous, yet quite memorable, hair metal talent, Roxx Gang, have recently released a swan song box set titled, Boxx Of Roxx. This gem contains all the goods that a hair metal fan could want. The set contains a disc of previously unreleased rarities, a disc of live music, and a DVD of videos. Many may question whether a group that had such a short lived time with their original lineup (1989 – 1991) should be worthy of releasing a box set. What they would fail to realize is that Roxx Gang continued on, releasing several solid albums in the mid and late 90s after hair metal was left for dead. While purists who love the band will be the first to scream that Roxx Gang is not hair metal (more of a hybrid of punk and blues), the music speaks for itself…this is hair metal. There are some bands that were never comfortable with the hair metal moniker (Def Leppard, Dokken, Bon Jovi) and Roxx Gang is one of those bands. However, it should not be deemed an insult to be labeled a “hair metal” band. In fact, it should be an honor. Listening to the rarities disc on Boxx Of Roxx makes it obvious that this is hair metal music and it is pretty darned good. The disc of outtakes harkens back to the bands early days with unreleased radio edits of beloved songs such as “Scratch My Back,” and “No Easy Way Out.” These songs show up again on the live disc and videos DVD. Seeing as how they are the most cherished songs in the Roxx Gang repertoire, it makes sense that they would be contained on all three discs. The real gems on Boxx Of Roxx are the recordings with original guitarist Eric Carroll who died mysteriously in the late 80s before the band gained their true notoriety. Boxx Of Roxx takes the listener on a time-traveling journey, spanning the entire career of Roxx Gang, but the three Eric Carroll tracks stand out as the ones with the most potential. They are, after all, the songs that got the record companies attention in the late 80s and rightfully so.The live disc was recorded in Texas in 1989 featuring the bands most famous and beloved lineup. Ripping through their hit songs and early material, this live album gives us a taste of what a Roxx Gang show was like back in their heyday. Those fortunate enough to have seen the band live, witnessed a real treat, as Roxx Gang built their reputation on their live performances. It would have been nicer if the band was able to release this concert as a DVD for the set, but fans should be ecstatic with the existing audio to enjoy.Overall, if you’re a hair metal fan, a lover of Roxx Gang, or someone that enjoys re-discovering some of the forgotten acts of the 80s, Boxx Of Roxx is worth the investment.

Album:

Things You've Never Done Before is the second studio album by American music group Roxx Gang, released in 1988.Glam hard rockers ROXX GANG major label debut album 1998’s “Things You’ve Never Done Before“. The album was reissued / remastered in 2000’s.Well, this is a rare CD reissue including that remastered audio plus 5 bonus tracks, rare singles and songs from their first indie recording. While isn’t an official reissue this is a professionally made, silver pressed CD and the quality is top notch, both in audio quality and the complete booklet.Roxx Gang was a band that I had heard of forever, but never attempted to track down any of their stuff. It’s a shame that band fell apart in the face of the looming alternative movement because they’re definitely a band of solid sleaze rockers. I guess they just came in too late to really make a difference and cement themselves. After making waves with their Love’em and Leave’em EP, this was the only full album the band released before breaking up in 1991 (they got back together and released a few albums from 1995-2001). This album did fairly well though, selling 250,000 copies. Pretty good, I’d say. The band went on to sign with Sony’s Epic Records but never made it to the 2nd album thanks to fighting in the band and with the label itself.Definitely a sleaze rock album worth looking into with “No Easy Way Out”, “Red Rose” and the bluesy “Ball ‘N Chain” sticking out as the best material.Highlights: “Scratch My Back”, “No Easy Way Out”, “Red Rose”, “Live Fast Die Young”, “Ball ‘N Chain”, “Fastest Gun in Town”, “Need Your Sex”

Album:

ROXX GANG first signed with Perris in 1995 and released their much anticipated second CD entitled “The Voodoo You Love”. The band released their debut in 1988 on major label Virgin – the reason for the time gap between the first Roxx Gang record and ”The Voodoo You Love” was that Virgin offered to make a second record to be released on their Charisma label. The band opted out of that deal with Virgin and signed with CBS/Epic which was bought by Sony shortly after. Sony then fired the staff at Epic and dropped many of the bands on the Epic label including Roxx Gang. These events along with the onset of “Grunge” rock delayed the release of ”The Voodoo You Love” until the band found a home on Perris Records. Now Perris Records is reissuing ROXX GANG’s “The Voodoo You Love”, and while this label never order a remastering of their early releases, this 2023 reissue comes with a bonus track. Less glam / pop metal and much more bluesy Rock-n-Roll / hard rock, “The Voodoo You Love” includes classic guitar riffs, some piano, horns and saxophone on various cuts.Kevin Steele, lead vocalist for Roxx Gang, said: ”What most people don’t know about ”The Voodoo You Love” is that the first album ‘Things You’ve Never Done Before’ line-up recorded this record. Two songs, “Time Bomb” and “Thick As Thieves”, were added afterwards and recorded by the at the time new line up pictured on the album cover. The new reissue contains the bonus track “Magic Carpet Ride” (original song not the Steppenwolf classic) that was an outtake from recording sessions. I can’t for the life of me remember why we didn’t include it on the record because it’s a really cool song”.Better, more meaty than their debut album, ”The Voodoo You Love” rocks all the way through start to finish, still with a bit of ’80s glam metal but firmly planted in timeless hard rock / rock ‘n roll. Add to that the Roxx Gang’s trademark fun tongue-in-cheek lyrics and some killer solos and we have a very good rockin’ album here.
