There was an impressive number of album releases in the 1989 rock & pop landscape, though many went unnoticed as they were eclipsed by others with stronger promotion. One of these was “Cries“, the self-titled debut and only LP by New Jersey 6-piece CRIES.Musically a mix of AOR & MOR, a commercial radio friendly format designed to appeal to the widest possible audience by staying melodic and easy to listen to, CRIES was among the European corporation BMG first bold bets in America in its quest for success after acquiring RCA.CRIES comprised experienced musicians from the industry such as vocalist / guitarists Rob Grenoble & Keith Mack, songwriters on most of the songs. While the music is accessible, it’s almost entirely guitar driven, with a pure rock foundation instead of pop.It was 1989, and this type of product needed a crystalline clean production, so the label enlisted renowned ‘Admiral’ Peter Coleman as producer & engineer (The Sweet, Pat Benatar, Lee Aaron) who shared mixing & mastering duties with giants Steve Thompson & Michael Barbiero… you know the sound.This original and only CD pressing became pretty rare over the years, so scarce that even bootleg label Time Warp did an unauthorized pressing and sold out quickly.A very nice record mixing rockers with midtempo melodic tunes, very well crafted on all aspects.
