Bio:

Ensiferum (Latin ēnsiferum, n adj., meaning "sword bearing") is a Finnish folk metal band from Helsinki. The members of the band label themselves as "melodic folk metal."Metal and folk melodies are played on lead guitar or keyboard, overlaying heavier heavy metal backing rhythms such as the classic gallop. The band also include fairly frequent use of acoustic guitars, usually at the beginnings of songs. The lyrical themes of their music most often relate to fantastical, archaic, or historic stories that can most often be grouped in with Nordic concepts, usually with heroic sentiment.Ensiferum was founded in 1995 by Markus Toivonen (guitar), Sauli Savolainen (bass) and Kimmo Miettinen (drums). For the band's name, they took the Latin neuter gender adjective ensiferum, which means "sword bearer". In the next year, Jari Mäenpää was taken into the band as singer and second guitar-player. In 1997, the first demo was released, containing three songs. The highly stylized logo of Ensiferum has appeared on all of their releases. In 1998, Sauli and Kimmo left the band and were replaced by Jukka-Pekka Miettinen (Kimmo's little brother, then 14 years old) and Oliver Fokin. In January 1999, a second demo was recorded, which although it did not produce a recording deal, boosted the band's confidence. In November 1999 a third demo, "Hero in a Dream", was recorded, which was successful in obtaining a record deal with Spinefarm Records. The logo that appears on all the bands releases was designed for the third demo by Tuomas Tahvanainen, who also designed the logos for the earlier demos. In 2000, the band went into the studio to work on their first album, Ensiferum, which was released in August 2001. In the same year, Meiju Enho joined them as a keyboard-player.

Album:

The EP opens with the extreme Warmetal, song of Finns Barathrum on your hard Infernal 1997. It is a piece pulled and aggressive, dark and full of double bass that will hopefully have awakened in the Finnish band a little 'passion for the sounds more violent. Second track is the famous Wratchild Iron Maiden, bonus track of the Japanese version of Unsung Heroes and previously in single Burning Leaves: very similar to the original, slightly accelerated with keyboards that play a fundamental role to customize as much as possible, a brick history of heavy metal. From a classic of the metal in a classic 70's hard rock: Lady In Black Uriah Heep is a beautiful song where text and music go hand in hand as it rarely happens. The version of Ensiferum, inserted into the tracklist of Victory Songs, pays homage to the original with the right amount of distorted guitars without distorting it. Last track is Breaking The Law Judas Priest, available in single Stone Cold Metal (2010). The sound dirty little tricks "epic" and the voice rough enrage the classic duo Tipton / Downling, a little pleasure to listen despite his age now important.Only real question that raises such work relates to the production of the first track, definitely recorded during the session of One Man Army: if the sixth album of Ensiferum will have the same power and no shortage of bass could really be a problem.

Album:

Having been a fan of ENSIFERUM’s music since their early days, I must admit to being one on the ones not entirely blown away by “Unsung Heros”, and so it was with mild trepidation that I first pushed play on their sixth full-length album, “One Man Army”. Due for release towards the end of this month, this album packs 11 songs with a total play time of just under an hour, with the bonus material comprising almost 15 additional minutes, and is a loud and clear message that ENSIFERUM still have plenty of punch left.Starting off with “March of War”, an epic intro melody sets the scene for the oncoming battle, complete with uplifting flutes and sweet acoustic strains which soon give way to the frantic paced, “Axe of Judgement”, a thunderous track that shows ENSIFERUM’s full glorious sound, calling to mind the fervour contained in the “Victory Songs” album. This song is sure to be a killer live, redolent as it is with everything from choir passages, shredding guitar parts, and all backed by majestic keyboard sections. “Heathen Horde” carries on in this epic vein albeit with the pace being taken down a notch. Featuring a guest appearance by Heri Joensen of TYR, this is another crushing track with an infectious chorus that you just can’t help but sing along to. The title track “One Man Army” has all the frantic passion that made “Deathbringer from the Sky” so electrifying. This song is true ENSIFERUM through and through, and is sure to win over the hearts of many sceptics, myself included. This is followed by the very short “Burden of the Fallen”, which melts in with a slow keyboard melody and clean vocals, preparing the listener for the slightly melancholic yet galloping track of “Warrior without a War”. Contrasts are rife in this album, as is evidenced by the next track: “Cry for the Earth Bounds” starts off with throaty a cappella chanting that gives way to a mid-paced choir-driven soulful tune that shows that ENSIFERUM can do more than thundering songs. The following track, “Two of Spades”, is however a bit more of a mixed bag. What starts out as a super catchy melody that could easily match “Twilight Tavern” in terms of being a sheer awesome drinking ditty takes a very unexpected twist, suddenly morphing into an ‘80s disco melody that then mingles with an almost western banjo undertow. Even after many listens, I still can’t really get used to this convolution, and this track will likely be one that gets extreme reactions one way or the other.“My Ancestor's Blood” on the other hand is a heavily bass-driven track that makes you just want to bang your head. And here again we see the clever variations from track to track, with things slowing down and becoming more mournful before melding into an atmospheric part that flawlessly joins with the next track “Descendants, Defiance, Domination”, almost giving the feeling that the two are really just halves of the same song. Clocking in at over 11 minutes, this is the longest song of the album; the pace gets taken up again fairly quickly through, taking the listener on one last climatic journey of victory and triumph. The final song “Neito Pohjolan” sees the Finnish Folk/Country influences of the band really shine through. However, whilst I don’t imply that the song is bad in any way, it doesn’t really seem to fit in with the rest particularly well, making it stick out a bit. Nevertheless, I guess a tribute to something closer to home for the band is also understandable and does add a certain facet to the album. The digipack version of “One Man Army” also comes with several bonus tracks, first of which is a hilarious cover of “Rawhide”. These bonus tracks are not nearly as refined as the rest of the album, but for that positively ooze reckless fun on the side of the band, almost reminding me of the ridiculously wild and merry chaos that is so trademark of FINNTROLL.One thing that must be said for ENSIFERUM is that they have chosen the track order exceptionally well, with alterations in tempo and style from one song to the next, ensuring that the album remains fresh and interesting throughout. “One Man Army” also has something to offer everyone newer and older fans alike, and many disappointed by “Unsung Heroes” will likely be pacified by this album which sees ENSIFERUM take a step back in the “From Afar” direction without making an album that sounds like “From Afar”-Version 2.0”.In short, this is a decent release, and with it ENSIFERUM show that they are not ready to relinquish their spot as one of the bands in the forefront of the Folk Metal genre just quite yet. “One Man Army” is definitely a strong come-back for the band, and I for one can’t wait to see them on their upcoming European tour!

Album:

The primary objective of listening to music is to have fun. True, there are several elements that bind us to the phonographic art like relatability or the emotions that are triggered by certain sounds. But nothing beats the simplicity of enjoyment through musical exposure.Ensiferum is a band that you have most certainly heard of, so I won’t go into listing band members and say that they are one of the most prominent bands to come out of Finland; or blab about how they are the coolest jocks in the epic folk metal school. They are precious for playing plain, simple, and fun folk metal most of the time, with some glimpses of Viking here and there for the sake of those serious bits. So even if you don’t care for the genre or aren’t familiar with these guys, you should at least have a laid-back, straight-forward experience listening to them anyway. The band’s latest campaign through the mythical forests, heroes tales and… well, metal, ‘Two Paths’, continues their legacy of being epic, energetic and true to their roots. Right from the first seconds of intro “Ajattomasta Unesta”, you get to feel the aura the group is trying to illustrate. And when “For Those About to Fight for Metal” kicks in, it becomes absolutely imperative that these guys know how to create fun, catchy and bombastic experiences. This – I dare say – is one of the best compositions in Ensiferum’s history, being not just a ton of fun, but also surprisingly grandiose. I kid you not: this song sums up every feeling and cultural nuance that make metal the beloved and rich genre that it is. From the colossal choirs accompanying the verses to the blood-pumping chorus, it is a perfect song and becomes more and more heart-warming every time you listen. As the name suggests, the album basically takes two different paths in terms of songwriting. There are the epic portions, which tend to turn to the Viking/Pagan side of things, with Petri Lindroos leading the band with his harsh vocals and the sounds being more aggressive and “in your face”. Examples are the already mentioned opener, the dauntless “Way of the Warrior” and the relentless, yet sorrowful “I Will Never Kneel”. And then there are those times where the Finnish go full-on folk like the Skyclad-esque “Don’t You Say”, the magical “Feast with Valkyries”, and “God Is Dead”.The songwriting is as good as any album from Ensiferum. While the amount of energy is high enough to feed an entire small town, the lyrics often hit a brick wall of creativity. The production value seems decent, but there are some parts where some riffs sound bland or the vocals are mixed in a strange way. But there are no visible problems when the unorthodox folk segments – like when Netta Skog’s accordion is more evident – come to light; which is, of course, the main proposal here. The core of what Ensiferum represents is maintained and still intact in the entire effort, but much like its predecessors ‘One Man Army’ and ‘Unsung Heroes’, it still slips in some occasions, mainly when it drastically changes from an epic and aggressive badassery to a joyful and medieval fair-like soundtrack, and vice-versa.‘Two Paths’ is a good album in the same way that ‘Lethal Weapon’ is a good movie – when you have this amount of action and this blowing-up in your ears, you don’t need much story and complexity. Always true to their fanbase and their winning formula à la Sonata Artica-meets Children of Bodom-meets Turisas, Ensiferum didn’t create a mind-blowing, erudite form of art. Rather, they chose once again to just make you want to grab that drinking horn, fill it with mead and get drunk with some kick-ass epic folk metal.
