Bio:

FROSTTIDE are a four-piece epic/ dark/ folk metal band formed by Joni Snoro back in 2009. The band released their first EP called "Dawn of Frost" in 2010 and won the "Year’s underground act 2011" trophy at the Finnish Metal Awards. Frosttide have already played shows with KORPIKLAANI as well as festivals together with the likes of SABATON, FEAR FACTORY among other bands and released second EP "Our Journey" – again single-handedly – in 2012.In April 2013, the band signed with NoiseArt records and its first full-length album called "Awakening" was released on 30th of August, 2013. Frosttide's debut got a positive response among fans and reviewers around the globe, which led the band to take part in the HEIDENFEST tour and play shows through Europe together with ENSIFERUM, TURISAS, EQUILIBRIUM and SUIDAKRA. The tour was a success. Frosttide supported their debut album with an intense sound and bombastic shows, earning more fans and recognition. Then the band embarked to tour France as support act for Ensiferum on their Unsung Heroes tour and later played 2 shows in Finland supporting Finntroll and Korpiklaani. Frosttide's sound can be described as the mixture of melodic and technical riffs, aggressive vocal lines and fast drumming accompanied by magical keyboard atmospheres that take the listener into an epic journey!

Album:

Last year NoiseArt Records graced my greedy hands with Survival of the Fittest, the debut release by Italian band Krampus. With two well received EPs already floating about, I was excited to hear their brand of modern folk metal. By the end of the year the album had worn a considerable groove in my playlist, so much so it eventually ended up on Madam X’s Top 10(ish) of 2012. Until now, 2013 has felt a little lean in terms of folk metal, outside of Månegarm’s (Legions of the North) blackened folk offering, nothing’s jumped out at me – Finnish melodic folk metallers Frosttide are doing their damnedest to change that.Frosttide’s first EP (Dawn of Frost) hit the shelves back in 2010 and while it’s a worthy listen, the beautiful melodies failed to hide that it was the product of a fledgling band. Their second EP release (Our Journey) hit around the tail end of 2012 and showcased a more professional edge - one of a band that removed the training wheels and grown considerably. And now in 2013 we have Frosttide’s debut full-length Awakening… a fitting title for a band awakening to a whole new chapter in their journey [Is this an infomercial? - Steel Druhm].To kick things off, Awakening is a concept album that tells of a group of warriors embarking on a journey to rescue a remote village from enemy invasion. The tracks transport you into the minds of these warriors, exposing you to their excitement at the start of the battle and similarly their crushing defeat as the battle ends. The tale begins with a lengthy instrumental “Winter’s Call.” The track feels like it needs a spot in a huge cinematic production like The Lord of the Rings or maybe The Hobbit. It’s a brilliantly constructed, swelling tune that feels as though it has a bit of Shade Empire grandeur trapped inside it. It’s lengthy, but doesn’t overstay its welcome, escalating seamlessly into the title track. “Awakening” introduces you to the harsh reality of the journey and you have a strong sense throughout Awakening that were Wintersun and Ensiferum to unite, Frosttide could well be the by-product of that union. “Dawn of Despair”, “Siege” and “Ruins of Defeat” mark the dark and dramatic turning point in the warrior’s mission, pummelling you with the cold, harsh reality of their defeat and things culminate well in “Unwritten (Engraved in the Stars)”.“Quest for Glory” and “Siege” showcase Joni Snoro’s roaring, stronger-than-ever, blackened rasp that sometimes brings to mind the all powerful Nergal. Joni has a vocal style that I don’t tire of hearing and it perfectly leads Juho Patinen’s screamy and coldly delivered backing vocals. Outside of his vocal duties, Joni’s guitar work reminds me a lot of Jari’s work with Wintersun. Frosttide’s guitar riffs don’t quite hit the mark on the technicality and speed of Wintersun, but hell, for a band that for all intents and purposes lacks Jari’s experience, Joni and Juho are doing a fine job! Melody is the name of the game with Frosttide, from the guitars through to the well placed, subtle, delicate keyboard interludes (delivered by Felipe Munoz), all are well placed and provide perfect contrast to Joonas Nislin’s precise, bruising battery. “Quest for Glory,” “No Turning Back,” and “Ruins of Defeat” carry you along on earwormyness [Oh my, another word to add to my ‘banned’ list! – AMG] and I’ll be damned if you aren’t trying to gouge their melodiousness out of your grey matter after only a few listens.Frosttide_final_comp_v04-clean_smallThere isn’t a lot to complain about with Awakening, but Frosttide don’t have a style that exactly sets them apart from what’s already out there. They make no use of traditional instrumentation and their guitar work fails to reach the breathtaking level of Wintersun, but in terms of a good, melodic musical journey Frosttide deliver. The production of the album is modern and plays up the instrumentation well. At times I felt Juho’s backing vocals were a little pulled back in the mix, but not unpleasantly so, Joni is after all the star of the show.Frosttide have me intrigued and impressed with their debut release. Taking note of the growth and increased maturity between their 2010 release and what they have on offer with Awakening, I’m already fired up to see what direction they take next.

Album:

Pursuant to a multitude of unspoken Finnish melodeath laws, Frosttide will always find themselves instinctively compared to the more audacious fare that blew so many of us away roughly 10-12 years ago. The Wintersun comparison is one that is so easy to draw here, but in my eyes, that implies marked deficiencies all across the board. Wintersun's debut had a few great tunes, especially "Battle Against Time," but honestly the entire project has become a parody of itself in recent years for reasons I can't be bothered to explain. Enter Frosttide, who came out of seemingly nowhere two years ago and blew me away with Awakening, which melded all paradigmatic attributes common for the style purported by Ensiferum and the like. Only, these fellas aren't exactly down in the squalor of the battlefield waxing heroically concerning deeds of valor and courage, instead isolated up in the nearby hillside congregated around a campfire, content to hammer out odes to the mystical and abstruse without ever losing that monumentally uplifting and powerful melodic astringency that gives the style such lasting power. For clarity's sake, the remaining Wintersun comparisons should be addressed right away. This primarily comes into play concerning the procession of the record, which akin to the debut, consists of only a handful of songs, with two of them hovering around the ten minute mark. Being familiar with the band right from jump, this wasn't of much concern to me, but it should stand to reason that if a duff tune does come down the creek, it hurts more than it should since a large swath of the album drops out as a result. "Gates of the Asylum" is such a number, as it fails to craft the esoteric magicks I have to come expect from these guys in a consistent manner. The primary motif of the tune is quite lackluster, and I found myself repeatedly checking my watch, wondering if and when the next song would ever finally come around. A disappointment after the riveting title track to be sure.Looking at the record as a whole, while such a complex formula could easily lose traction in the hands of a band of overtly self-indulgent dilettantes, I have always appreciated these guys as not only a collaborative project, but on an individual level as well. Particularly Felipe Munoz, who blows me away in nearly every project he has contributed. A moment of self-realization occurred while listening to this thing, wherein I realized how much more genuine it sounds when the keyboard arrangements are truly played by hand instead of taking the easy route and programming them like so many other acts do, whether it be a lack of resources or concerted laziness. The two instrumental breaks make this case for me, and both lead spectacularly into two of the strongest numbers here. One of those examples would of course be "New Reign," which makes great use of the lack of time constraints to craft a bulwark of pure majesty, comprised of grainy chugs, delicate lead intervals and an overall well-written arrangement on the whole. Generally, the guitars sort of bob and weave back and forth between more traditional melodic death and less weighty power metal antics, and the intangible, joyous vision elucidated means that even the shorter tunes hardly have their work cut out for them. Generally, newer acts like Frosttide tend to trace steps long forgotten and return to the eager, hungry sounds of their broadsword-swinging forebears, but I found it quite refreshing that these Finns are otherwise content to expound on the vivacious debut. It works damn well.Other than the fact that the production values are a modicum suspect at times (the guitar tone is honestly rather toothless), there is little to complain about here other than "Gates of the Asylum." That one off-song means that Blood Oath fails to upstage its predecessor in lasting power, but for those of you sick of Wintersun's bullshit as of late, there is no reason to cry over spilled Koskenkorva; as Frosttide's got your back, and they deserve a pat on theirs as a result. Great stuff.

Album:

Epic, orchestral, but still restless an wild – FROSTTIDE provide everything that fans love about Finnish Metal. Between influences such as Insomnium, Moonsorrow, Wintersun and Amorphis, the band presents a characteristic way of sound, that combines directness with sweeping structures. With their debut on Out Of Line, FROSTTIDE immediately set a mark! Their „Decedents“-EP originally recorded for a tour through Japan is now completely new mixed and got a remaster by Finnvox Studio (u.a. Children Of Bodom, Nightwish) setting the song material on a perfect sound ground. Despite the large big screen arrangements and distinct over-lenght the songs seem to flow on their own and come to the point in melodic and suspense just as easy as a ballet dancer. The coldness of the finnish winter rays out of every note and adds an own, raw beauty to the effort. Songwriter and frontman Juho Patinen comments: "With the new mixing and mastering „Decedents - Enshrined“ finally reaches its whole potential. The concept surrounds around the theme of death. Like in reality, the stories are many so each song represents its own unique story about the sorrow and darkness, yet beauty and peace of death. Fitting perfectly to the tone of the songs." „Decedents – Enshrined“ will be released as a 2-CD Digipak with the instrumental versions as bonus.
