Bio:
Anthony Frank Iommi Jr. (born 19 February 1948 is an English musician. He co-founded the pioneering heavy metal band Black Sabbath, and was the band's guitarist, leader, primary composer, and sole continuous member for over five decades. He is considered one of the pioneers of heavy metal music and is responsible for inspiring numerous subgenres of metal, most notably doom metal. Iommi was ranked number 13 on Rolling Stone's 2023 list of the “250 Greatest Guitarists of all Time.On his last day of work in a sheet metal factory, as a teenager, Iommi lost the tips of the middle and ring fingers of his right hand in an accident, an event which crucially impacted his playing style. He briefly left Black Sabbath (then known as Earth) in 1968 to join Jethro Tull, but did not record any material with the band, and subsequently returned to Black Sabbath in 1969. In 2000, he released his first solo album Iommi, followed by 2005's Fused, which featured his former bandmate Glenn Hughes. After releasing Fused, he formed Heaven & Hell, which disbanded shortly after the death of Ronnie James Dio in 2010 (they toured on Black Sabbath songs when Dio was in the band but changed the name for legal reasons). In 2011, Iommi published his autobiography, entitled Iron Man: My Journey Through Heaven and Hell with Black Sabbath.
Album:
Deluxe edition with 2 bonus tracks. With Black Sabbath's hometown farewell show in Birmingham in the summer of 2025 followed shortly by the immense loss of iconic frontman Ozzy Osbourne, nine-fingered guitar virtuoso, acid blues pioneering metal legend and overall driving force Tony Iommi, seemingly retreated to the studio to process his grief, resulting in his first solo album to solely feature his name since 2005's Fused. Written in collaboration with acclaimed Norwegian vocalist Jorn Lande, From The Dark is the type of old school heavy metal record we don't hear much of nowadays, serving up retro riffage married to Lande's dramatic vocal presence, equal parts theatrical and menacing, as he delves into themes of existential questioning, while utilising dystopian imagery to ruminate on the fleeting nature of the human experience, such as on the standout rager 'Stormwatcher' with its nautical metaphors and thalassic visions of encroaching new horizons. Backed by bassist Becky Baldwin and drummer Karl Brazil, the ample rhythm section locks in trudging grooves with enough space for a deluge of classic riffs and psych-tinged lead guitar solos. Working to self-produce the project with long-time creative partner, co-writer, producer and audio engineer Mike Exeter, From The Dark sounds as fresh as anything Iommi penned when he was half the age he is now, delivering a highly polished, pristinely produced collection of first wave heavy metal worship as authentic as it is theatrical.
