Bio:

Bernard John "Bernie" Marsden (born 7 May 1951) is an English rock guitarist.[1] Having played with Glenn Cornick's Wild Turkey in 1974, he then played with Babe Ruth, from 1975–76, before becoming an original member of Paice Ashton Lord in 1977 and then joining the hard rock band, Whitesnake, after having the possibility of playing with his boy-time hero Paul McCartney and Wings because while waiting, David Coverdale asked him to form Whitesnake. In more recent years, Marsden has toured with his bands Company of Snakes, M3 (both formed with fellow former Whitesnake members Micky Moody and Neil Murray), and performed with Elkie Brooks. Over the years he has taken part in a number of sessions and has released a handful of solo albums (And About Time, Too!, Look at Me Now, Green & Blues, Stacks). He has also collaborated with Micky Moody on a number of Marsden-Moody live and studio projects. On the Sweden Rock Festival on 10 June 2011 Bernie Marsden played with Whitesnake for the first time since 1981, thus becoming the second of only two former Whitesnake band members who have played with Whitesnake in recent years, the other person being Adrian Vandenberg, who also played with them on the Sweden Rock Festival. In the last ten years, Marsden has been involved in very different projects. The most unusual being two engagements at the National Theatre in London for Nickolas Hytner's productions of Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale" and "Henry the V" in collaboration with Simon Webb. Also, he appeared in ZDF television in Germany for their production of "Frankie", a six-part TV special. After this, Marsden has worked alongside Robert Plant, Paul Weller, Ian Paice and Jon Lord for a charity concert in London. Bernie also played Guitar with Ringo Starr and his son Zak Starkey in Monte Carlo. Most recently, he has been playing and writing for guitar virtuoso Joe Bonamassa.Bernie Marsden now endorses PRS Guitars and has his own Signature guitar released in 2012. As of the beginning of 2013, he is recording his new album for Mascot Provogue records at Abbey Road Studios in London and Royal Studios in Memphis. He has also produced a Blues Documentary, in collaboration with Jim Singleton, filmed in Mississippi for release in late 2013.

Album:

Some musicians build their legacy in the recording studio. BERNIE MARSDEN built his in front of an audience. ”STAGE”, the fifth and final installment in Marsden’s acclaimed ‘Inspirations Series’ brings together four unforgettable concerts spanning nearly twenty-five years, celebrating the warmth, musicianship and unmistakable stage presence that made Marsden one of Britain’s most beloved blues / rock guitarists.Spanning four unforgettable live performances recorded between 1996 and 2020, the album captures the late British blues legend exactly where he belonged - on stage.Since 2021, Bernie Marsden’s acclaimed Inspirations Series has celebrated the artists and recordings that helped shape his distinctive guitar style. Albums such as Kings, Chess, Trios and Icons paid tribute to the musicians he admired throughout his remarkable career.Rather than concluding the series with another studio project, “Stage” turns the spotlight on Bernie himself. It captures the place where countless fans believe he truly came alive—performing on stage, connecting effortlessly with audiences through tasteful guitar work, soulful vocals and an infectious sense of joy.The performances of Whitesnake’s ‘Walking in the Shadow of the Blues’, ‘Ain’t No Love in the Heart of the City’ are stunning. Also the classic ‘Walking By Myself’ – the performance becomes even more memorable thanks to the appearance of Bernie’s longtime friend and fellow guitarist Joe Bonamassa, whose fiery playing complements rather than competes with Marsden’s elegant phrasing.Instead of documenting a single performance, “Stage” draws from four carefully selected concerts recorded between 1996 and 2020, each revealing a different aspect of Marsden’s artistry. The Radcliffe Centre in Buckingham (2008) presents an intimate acoustic performance enhanced by string arrangements. The Keeping The Blues Alive at Sea concert from 2019 showcases Bernie in full electric mode, complete with a swinging brass section. The legendary 1996 performance at Norway’s Notodden Blues Festival features an outstanding lineup including Snowy White, Tony Ashton, David Levy and Henry Spinetti. Finally, the 2020 concert at London’s Under The Bridge introduces a six-piece band alongside special guest Joe Bonamassa. Marsden’s unmistakable tone, relaxed delivery and tasteful guitar work create the ideal setting for a remarkable musical conversation with Bonamassa. It’s less about dazzling technique than about two exceptional musicians listening and responding to one another with genuine respect.Together, these recordings form a musical portrait of an artist who could move effortlessly between intimate acoustic blues and electrifying full-band performances without ever losing his unmistakable identity.“Stage” is far more than another live compilation. The album take recordings from different concerts, allowing listeners to experience the many facets of Bernie Marsden as both guitarist and performer. From the intimate acoustic atmosphere of Buckingham to the electrifying energy of Keeping The Blues Alive at Sea, the historic Notodden Blues Festival performance and the star-studded Under The Bridge concert featuring Joe Bonamassa, the album demonstrates the remarkable consistency of Marsden’s musicianship across more than two decades.Whether playing with a full electric band, an acoustic ensemble or sharing the stage with fellow guitar heroes, Marsden always served the song first. His warm tone, lyrical phrasing and genuine love for the music made every performance feel personal, regardless of the venue. As the final chapter in the Inspirations Series, “Stage” couldn’t be a more fitting farewell. It celebrates not only Bernie Marsden’s extraordinary musicianship, but also the generosity, humility and joy that defined him throughout his career. More than a live album, it stands as a lasting tribute to an artist whose influence continues to resonate across the blues world. If your playlist includes early Whitesnake, Gary Moore, Joe Bonamassa, Peter Green, Rory Gallagher, or classic British blues / timeless classic rock, “Stage” is an essential addition to your collection.
