Bio:
The classic line-up who created the albums Silver Haze, Voodoo Caravan and Hooray! It's A Deathtrip has reunited. Lead singer Magnus Ekwall (Ayreon) is back behind the mic together with the dynamic power of drummer Jolle Atlagic (Hanoi Rocks, Electric Boys, Firebird), guitarist Christian Carlsson and bassist Roger Nilsson (Spiritual Beggars, Firebird). This unique foursome has kept the 70́s feel intact and their new album “Born From Fire” contains 12 smashing tracks.Magnus Ekwall about his return in THE QUILL and the lyrics on the new album - I got a phone call from Christan about a year ago and we decided to try and write some songs again. Actually there were no plans for a reunion at that moment but things went very smooth and we kind of got back the old "Silver Haze" feeling and here we are.- The new record is back to the roots, no frills, just full throttle real QUILL rock! The lyrics are based on my life and things in life like, birth, death, sorrow and happiness, and I think that everyone can relate to that. First time we got together in the rehearsal room and jammed at a couple of old songs it was like we never been apart, says Christian Carlsson. We just picked up from where we left off.- Set Free Black Crow was the first tune we wrote and I think we managed to squeeze in everything about THE QUILL in that one, says JolleAtlagic.- Getting together again was very inspiring and new material was flowing out of our brains, endlessly, says Roger Nilsson.- After two months on the road with Monster Magnet and all big European festivals on top of that we had achieved pretty much everything we aimed for. It was hard to reload and we slowly drifted apart as a band, it obviously took us 10 years to recover, says Christian.
Album:
Swedish hard rock veterans THE QUILL return with ‘Master Of The Skies’ on Metalville Records. The new album marks another chapter in a long-standing dialogue between groove, weight, melody and power – this time with a darker tone.
It’s heavy without being clumsy, atmospheric without losing its swing – heavy rock with depth and character that has been hard-earned.THE QUILL is a band that is comfortable in its own skin and writes music because it still means it, not because someone asked them to. No reinvention. No trip down memory lane. ‘Master Of The Skies’ is just THE QUILL doing what they’ve always done best: writing heavy rock songs that stand on their own.The title track kicks off the CD and is a classic THE QUILL stomper. Built on riff power and Sabbathian influences, the song is a great start to the album. Combined with a change of pace and a blistering solo, the opener is a delight for headbangers.“Dark City” maintains the slower pace and has a stronger ’80s rock vibe. It’s a pulsating heavy rock song with a solid punch. The first three songs of the album reflect the range of The Quill’s musical approach. The acoustic start to “You Can’t Kill My Soul” adds a calmer tone to the album. This six-minute ode to galactic soundscapes gets heavier along the way, showcasing The Quill’s musical vision in a single song. The band also adds some short numbers to the mix, such as “Son of Light”, a boiled-down acoustic interlude in which Magnus Ekwall showcases the expressive quality of his voice. “Now You Are Gone” is another song that doesn’t reach the two-minute mark. This almost spiritual moment on the album leads to the roaring “Lights Turn Low”, a tune that demands you turn up the volume. The album’s masterpiece is called “Mastodon”. At nine minutes in length, it is by far the longest track on the album and an epic moment too. Starting introverted and calm, the song develops into a riff monster. This mammoth-like song showcases the band’s craftsmanship. So much happens within these nine minutes — it’s a jaw-dropping experience.“Master of the Skies” showcases the band’s mastery of their craft, delivering 45 minutes of excellent heavy rock music. Heaviness, emotions and soulful moments come together to create a powerful metal / hard rock album that proves why THE QUILL have been leading this genre for four decades.
