Bio:

CHRIS KAPPAS seems to be singing about himself since the title his debut solo album, ”Breaking The Chains”. Not as an abstract metaphor, but as a musical statement of liberation from limitations, from expectations, from internal restraints. The frontman of metal act ACHELOUS steps forward here with a deeply personal release, opening a chapter he has clearly been carrying within him for years: his genuine love for Melodic Hard Rock and AOR.”Breaking The Chains” is more than just a side project. It is an album that breathes freedom — freedom in songwriting, in arrangement, and in emotional expression. From the very first listen, it becomes evident that this is a work born out of authentic creative necessity.Achelous was born in Athens in January 2011 by Chris Achelous as an one man project. After the release of 2 demos in the atmospheric extreme sound it was time for the project to evolve. It was November of 2013 when ex-Recflection singer Chris Kappas, joined forces and made Achelous a band. In April of 2014 the band released its first demo "Al Iskandar", which was sold out (500 copies) in a three month period. At the end of 2014 the band entered "The Music House" studio in order to record it’s first EP entitled "The Cold Winds Of Olympus". The EP was released in February of 2015 and got very positive reviews giving the band the opportunity to promote it by performing live all over Athens, in clubs like Arhitektoniki, Kyttaro, Modu, Crow, etc with great local and international acts such as Forsaken, Martyr, Reflection, Powercrue, Mystery, Valor, Tidal Dreams, Fortress Under Siege, etc. The year 2018 found the band finishing the recordings of it’s first full length album entitled Macedon, under the wings of producer/Reflection guitarist Stathis Palvlantis at the Music House Studio. The album was released on September of 2018 by Metal Fighters Records and was received with great reviews. As a part of the album’s promotion the band made a live appearance at the 10 years anniversary Malta Doom Metal Festival alongside huge bands like Demon, Ancient Rites, Necrophobic, The Skull, etc. At this moment the band is in the studio rehearsing and getting ready to hit the road once again for various gigs all over Greece, starting with a live appearance at Kyttaro Club, supporting Lonewolf (Fr) and the legendary Battleroar. See you all on stage …

Album:

Debut solo album, ”Breaking The Chains”. It is an album that breathes freedom freedom in songwriting, in arrangement, and in emotional expression. From the very first listen, it becomes evident that this is a work born out of authentic creative necessity.Listening to the first three tracks, it becomes clear that we are dealing with edgy hard rock enriched with strong AOR passages. This is, in every sense, a spring album not only because of its late February release, but because of its atmosphere. It carries a warm, romantic vibe that feels tailor-made for carefree motorcycle rides, late-night bar hopping in hard rock venues, or gatherings at biker hangouts with cold beers and dim lights. The romantic element blends beautifully with the harmonic interplay between male and female vocals. The alternating vocal lines are not used as a gimmick; they function as a genuine narrative device, adding depth, tension and that unmistakable old-school aura reminiscent of the golden era of the genre.I’m Alive opens the album with arguably its heaviest moment. The main riff carries subtle epic heavy metal undertones you cannot take the epic metal spirit out of Kappas — yet the song quickly shifts toward an early ’80s heavy rock direction, enhanced by discreet keyboards that evoke a late ’70s feel. The title track, Breaking The Chains, leans closer to melodic AOR territory, featuring an infectious ’80s-style sing-along chorus and sharp guitar work that recalls the more accessible yet still dignified side of the genre.Light My Fire marks the first duet of the album. After an intro that nods to ’80s pop-rock sensibilities, the track evolves into an upbeat hard rock anthem with glam/sleaze energy and a strong live-oriented spirit.Lies stands out with its beautiful AOR-driven keyboard introduction, setting the stage for a melodic, slightly neo-classical composition with a dramatic character. The arrangement channels late ’80s/early ’90s European hard rock aesthetics, culminating in a powerful chorus that balances melody and intensity.Day In Your Hell adopts a grittier tone. A midtempo piece with blues-infused heavy textures, it carries a nostalgic hard rock flavor that personally brought to mind the debut-era sound of NORTHWIND - that warm, authentic blend of melody and raw edge.Your Reasons Why is one of the album’s highlights. With keyboards playing a leading role, it dives headfirst into classic AOR territory, radiating strong ’80s vibes and a distinctly “Americanized” feel. Here, the marriage between hard rock grit and AOR melody produces a truly warm and full-bodied sound.Strangers In Love, the second duet, continues in a melodic mid-empo direction with clear influences from classic melodic hard acts. The vocal interplay recalls bands such as Stratus - essentially the reincarnation of PRAYING MANTIS - or even CLIVE BURR’S ESCAPE featuring Bernie Shaw on vocals, where hard rock meets AOR with theatrical flair yet sincere emotion. No self-respecting hard rock album would be complete without a power ballad, and Crawling In The Fire fulfills that role perfectly. Built on a classic ’80s formula, it gradually builds toward an emotionally charged chorus, delivering intensity and sentiment in equal measure. The album closes with Electrified, a genuine hard rock dynamite finale. Uptempo, energetic and driven by pure rock ’n’ roll spirit, it provides the perfect closing statement sweaty, vibrant and triumphant.”Breaking The Chains” does not attempt to reinvent the wheel. What it does instead is embrace its identity with confidence. Strong songwriting, memorable choruses, thoughtful production and above all a sincere love for AOR and melodic hard rock define this release. It is an album filled with romantic feeling, springtime energy and that warm analog touch that makes you want to press play again from the beginning. For those who grew up with the heroes of ’80s melodic hard rock and AOR - and for anyone eager to rediscover that spirit today - Chris Kappas’ debut stands as an honest and thoroughly enjoyable statement.
