Album:
Frontiers Music will release a Deluxe Edition of STREETLIGHT last studio album “Night Vision”, including bonus tracks.Hailing from Jonkoping in Sweden, the band stays true to the AOR / melodic rock genre, delivering distinctive melodies, punchy choruses and strong hooks, all in the likeness of bands like Journey, Toto and Kansas, but with a definite edge.”Night Vision [Deluxe Edition]” is an album of supreme quality, exquisite taste, surpassing STREETLIGHT’s debut CD with refined songwriting, lovely harmonies (all members contribute) and mature melodies. We’re in front of one of the best AOR albums of the year – that’s for sure.Led by Johannes Hager‘s powerful vocals and stellar guitar work, STREETLIGHT crafts a sound that is insanely crisp and dynamic, with the production transparent and shiny. The guitar work is extremely interesting and often grips into the likes of Neal Schon and more shred-related guitarists like Paul Gilbert, with soaring solos and chunky riffs that will satisfy even the most discerning metal heads and hard rockers leaning on heavier hooks. On the opener ‘Long Distance Runner’ the band seems to throw in the all the AOR moves piled up in their kitchen sink armoury. The temperature rises. Then, the beefed up second track, ‘Captured in the Night’, generates a new impulse and new energy, providing all the urgency and purpose that great Melodic Rock needs.’Sleep Walk’ takes its cue, working up to a multi-layered chorus. This is classy, sophisticated stuff, with vocal harmonies borrowed from Brian Wilson. It’s like the Swedish five piece have taken the AOR / Westcoast template – originally struck by artists like Toto and Steely Dan – polished it up, added a bit of oomph here and there, and are now looking for ways to shape it into a sound that will define them.‘Learn To Love Again’ and ‘Fly With Eagles’ are AOR versions of Johnny Hates Jazz, where the genre doesn’t really matter, only the fine songwriting and the arrangement counts. In both cases the music’s melancholy undertow gives them an emotional power, often pursued unsuccessfully by many a rock band. The band truly put an indelible Streetlight stamp on ‘Late Night Hollywood’. The piercing harmonies, rampant keyboards and pacey tempo seem to swell the song from the inside out. ‘Straight To Video’ sees them letting loose, indulging in some pacey, shout-it-out rock’n’roll. And, in an abrupt switch of tone, they come with ‘Where Did Love Go’, an affectionate look back at “yacht rock”, a brand of popular music that took pride in steering well clear of the sociopolitical issues of the day. Then they close the record with a long track, ‘End Game’, varied, taking the best from Toto dynamics and making them their own.The live version of ‘Leanna’ is one of the new tracks from this deluxe editon. Vocalist Johannes Häger commenting: “‘Leanna’ is such a fun song for us to play live, and this version really captures Streetlight in our favorite place – on stage”. “’Learn To Love Again (Acoustic) offers a more intimate take on a song that has quickly become a fan favourite, and we think it suits the song perfectly,” completes Häger. The other bonus track, the new studio track ‘Shake That Feeling’, is a highlight. Mixing a classic melodic rock midtempo pulse with a 1984-type AOR drive, the song makes clear why STREETLIGHT is one of leading band in the genre today.
