Bio:
Soldier was an 80's hard rock band formed in 1985 in Salt Lake City. the original lineup consisted of Chris Boudreaux (lead vocals, keyboards), Brian Kirby (guitar) (both from Las Vegas), Clayton Austin (guitar, keyboards) and Jed Bradshaw (bass) (both from tremonton utah) . Clayton Austin and Jed Bradshaw were previous members of the rock band PALACE (formed in 1975 in tremonton utah). Palace wrote original material and played the club scene in northern utah (and surrounding states) in the late 1970's thru the early 1980's. Palace recorded there only album (self titled) in 1983 in logan utah at USU studios (where both were attending Utah State University). this album was not released on cassette or CD. several Palace songs would later make it onto Soldier's SAY WHEN album. Palace broke up in 1984 as some members (Austin and Bradshaw) wanted to relocated to L.A. and others did not. this left Austin and Bradshaw looking for a new singer and drummer with aspirations to move to Hollywood. a short time later, they met lead singer Chris Boudreaux (The Take) in Salt Lake City. this was the beginning of Soldier. A short time after this, they relocated to Las Vegas and then eventually to L.A. while in Las Vegas, they hired an additional guitar player (Brian Kirby). once the band relocated to L.A., they began auditioning drummers. they hired Randy Kantor as their drummer and began playing the L.A. club circuit. from 1987 thru 1990, they did change drummers several more times. the rest of the lineup stayed the same until late 1988 where Chris Boudreaux (lead vocalist) left the band. Austin took on lead locals after Boudreaux left the band. they continued to play the L.A. club circuit thru 1990.in early 1986 Soldier recorded there first and only album (MY WINDOW) with Chris Boudreaux as lead vocalist. this album was self released on cassette and contained 7 tracks. former ex palace drummer Tracy Nelson (and a session drummer) played drums on the album. in 1987 a second pressing of the cassette was released with a different cover. After Boudreaux (lead singer) exited the band in 1988, the band recorded a 3 track EP cassette (in 1989) with Austin taking on lead vocals. the new material with Austin as singer was more rock n roll oriented where as the material with Boudreaux as lead singer had more of a pop rock feel to it. in 1990 the album SAY WHEN was self released on CD (and can now be purchased on amazon and itunes). this album contains the bulk of the original material written by soldier thru it's active years (1986 - 1991). this is there only album released on CD. this album contains 17 tracks including several songs (portraits, life) from Austin and Bradshaw's former band Palace. Austin sings lead on almost all tracks.
Album:
Some time ago we featured the Metallic Blue Records remastered version of “My Window”, the debut 1987 album from American melodic rockers SOLDIER. There was a few acts with this name at the time, this SOLDIER hails from Utah, and after three years playing gigs in the area, in the summer of 1985 the band decided to move out to Los Angeles to get more exposure and to seek a record deal.In the spring of 1986, SOLDIER recorded their first batch of songs and first stopped in Las Vegas for six months where they picked up a second guitarist, while traveled back and forth from Nevada and Utah as they finished up the mastering process on their newly recorded tracks. Once completed, SOLDIER put them on their debut release, “My Window.” The cassette sold quite well in Utah and Nevada. The band headed further west to Los Angeles and the famous Sunset Strip to see if they could build on their success. SOLDIER played all over Hollywood, including Gazzarris, The Troubadour, FM Station, The Roxy, and The Whisky a Go Go. At the end of 1988 / early 1989 SOLDIER entered into the studio for the recording of the 2nd album, mainly sold by themselves in limited copies. Now Metallic Blue Records is reissuing all these tapes under the title “Soldier Of Fortune“, a collection of melodic catchy radio-friendly numbers very well recorded, mixed & produced. With this really well finished product, Soldier started to get more label attention, but there began to be some contention between members, some wanted to keep things melodic and radio friendly, while the others to focus a little more on their progressive roots. They had several drummer tryouts, including Scott Travis before he joined HAWK, RACER X and then JUDAS PRIEST.”Soldier Of Fortune” includes very fine melodic songs in ‘Long Long Way’, ‘Can’t Make It Alone’, ‘Addicted to Life’, and more hard rock oriented such as ‘Politics Of Rock ‘N Roll’ and the fun “Popeye”, mixed with the straight-ahead hair metal soun dfrom the era.SOLDIER would record another album before eventually disbanding.
