Bio:
Scott Rockenfield (born June 15, 1963),also known as SRock, is an American drummer and composer. He is best known as the drummer for the progressive metal band Queensrÿche, which he co-founded in 1982, and the hard rock band Slave to the System.Rockenfield was born and raised in Seattle, Washington.[2] He started playing music at the age of 11, after he saw some drums in elementary school and wanted to play on them. That Christmas, his parents got him a cheap drum kit.In the sixth grade, he became classmates with Chris DeGarmo, who would later become the guitarist in his band. While attending Redmond High School, he took special interest in music and film.Guitarist Kelly Gray, who would be a guitarist in Queensrÿche between 1998 and 2002 and with whom Rockenfield played in Slave to the System, went to the same high school and graduated in the same year as Rockenfield.Rockenfield cites Judas Priest, Boston and Kiss as his early influences, and later he also became a big fan of Neil Peart and Rush, Van Halen, Iron Maiden, The Police and Pink Floyd; bands that were progressive and, "really pushed the envelope".Together with guitarist Michael Wilton, whom he met at Easy Street Records in Seattle,Rockenfield formed the band Cross+Fire in 1980. They covered songs from popular heavy metal bands such as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Before long, guitarist Chris DeGarmo and bassist Eddie Jackson joined Cross+Fire, and the band name was changed to The Mob. In 1982, they recruited Geoff Tate on vocals and the band continued under the name Queensrÿche.Rockenfield was with the band until 2021, however he was on indefinite hiatus from 2017.Rockenfield and Paul Speer wrote and recorded an instrumental progressive rock album in 2000 entitled Hells Canyon, which is inspired by places and events in the Idaho region of Hells Canyon. The album received good reviews. In 2001, Rockenfield collaborated with former Queensrÿche guitarist Kelly Gray and the Brother Cane members Damon Johnson and Roman Glick in a hard rock project named Slave to the System, releasing one eponymous album.Their album was re-released in 2006 on Spitfire Records. In 2008, Rockenfield released a solo album, named The X Chapters. In 2013, Rockenfield played drums on the Headless album Growing Apart, which also includes vocalist Göran Edman and the Italian guitarists Walter Cianciusi and Dario Parente. In 2017 Rockenfield took a hiatus from Queensrÿche which was originally supposed to last for a few months but then prolonged indefinitely. Former singer Geoff Tate later expressed concern for Rockenfield, suggesting that he was in a difficult life situation and current singer Todd La Torre suggested it was unlikely Rockenfield would ever return to the band.Rockenfield has since filed a lawsuit alleging breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty and wrongful discharge. A November 2023 court filing in Snohomish County Superior Court in the state of Washington, cites the parties agreeing that "all claims, counterclaims, and crossclaims between" Rockenfield on one side, as the plaintiff, and Wilton and Jackson on the other side, as the defendants, should be dismissed "with prejudice," with Rockenfield and his former bandmates "to bear their own costs and fees with regard to all such claims, counterclaims, and cross claims.".Queensrÿche /ˈkwiːnzraɪk/ is an American progressive heavy metal band formed in 1982 in Bellevue, Washington out of the local band The Mob. The band has released 14 studio albums, one EP and several DVDs, and continues to tour and record. The original lineup consisted of vocalist Geoff Tate, guitarists Chris DeGarmo and Michael Wilton, bassist Eddie Jackson and drummer Scott Rockenfield.Queensrÿche has been successful in the progressive scene, having sold over 20 million albums worldwide, including over 6 million albums in the United States. The band received worldwide acclaim after the release of their 1988 album Operation: Mindcrime, which is often considered one of the greatest concept albums of all time. Their follow-up release, Empire, released in 1990, was also very successful and included the hit single "Silent Lucidity". The band has received three Grammy Award nominations for songs off both albums. In the late 90s, drummer Rockenfield also received a Grammy nomination outside of Queensrÿche. In 1997, guitarist and primary songwriter DeGarmo left the band for personal reasons. Over the years, his replacements have been Kelly Gray, Mike Stone, and Parker Lundgren, respectively. Following a highly publicized backstage altercation before a show in São Paulo, Brazil in April 2012, Tate was fired from the band and replaced with then-Crimson Glory singer Todd La Torre. In response to his dismissal, Tate and his wife Susan (who served as the band's manager from 2005–2012) filed a lawsuit in a Washington court, claiming that he was wrongfully terminated. The ruling in the preliminary injunction was that both parties were allowed to use the name Queensrÿche until a court ruling or a settlement decides who gets to use the name.A settlement was reached on April 17, 2014,in which founding members Wilton, Rockenfield and Jackson were awarded the rights to the band trademark, continuing to play with the lineup that additionally includes singer La Torre and guitarist Lundgren.During the time both parties could use the name Queensrÿche, Tate created his own lineup featuring former guitarist Gray and musicians from bands including Blue Öyster Cult, Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake, Dio, AC/DC and Quiet Riot. This version of Queensrÿche with Geoff Tate released the album Frequency Unknown on 23 April 2013,while Queensrÿche (with La Torre replacing Tate) released their eponymous album on 24 and 25 June 2013 (European and American release date, respectively). Both bands toured in 2013 and 2014.

Scott Rockenfield , five-time-Grammy-nominated composer, and founding member / drummer of the legendary hard rock band QUEENSRŸCHE, is releasing of his new solo album ”Unchained“. The title may be a reference to the legal dispute Rockenfield initiated with his former band several years ago, but also his famous ‘Rock Chain Drum Kit’.So over 8 years after leaving the famous band, Scott Rockenfield presents this 10-tracker musically very different to Queensryche. Scott define ”Unchained” as a genre-defying project. And that’s pretty true.Fans of Queensryche and Scott know that for the last two decades he also makes his living writing & performing music for films, commercials, video games, including blockbuster projects such as “Jason Bourne”, “Elysium”, “Call Of Duty” and “Iron Man And His Awesome Friends”. And you can hear some of that on ”Unchained”.The record deliver song-format music somewhere between Sixx:AM, Shinedown, and the 2000’s band Scott was part of; Slave to the System. For the most part anthemic rockers with catchy choruses. However, the album sounds like no-other.Working for years in movie scores, Rockenfield has become an expert in musical digital edition, and alongside sharp guitars and hard hitting drums, all songs have an ‘orchestration’ in the background. It isn’t a ‘synths thing’ per se, but more like layers of sound creating a different atmosphere not typical in rock music. There’s some musicians listed in the personnel, however their role isn’t specified. I’m afraid Scott is at charge of most what we hear on ”Unchained”, not sure if a ‘genre-defying’ album, but very interesting for sure.As said, while the songs’ sound are atypical, at the end of the day all are hard rock songs clocking around the 4 minute mark. Among the highlights there’s the stadium-ready midtempo ‘A Light in the Dark’, the groovy modern ‘Judas Kiss’, and the pretty heavy ‘Born To Win’. Scott deliver variation with the modern country-ish ‘Fallen Soldier’, which tells the story of a fallen soldier’s widow.”Unchained” is a very interesting album from Scott Rockenfield, musically not living at the shadow of Queenryche. There’s some songs modern rock sounding, not bad at all, but due the arrangements / layers, feel like written for cheesy movie soundtracks. On the other hand, we find compelling tracks, well-written and sonically trying to offer something new in the current Rock scene.
