Bio:

Stygian Fair is a band from a small town called Umeå in the north of Sweden. The band has existed for about nine years now and it all started when both P-O Jonsson and Emil Holmqvist decided to leave a band called Crave to lay the foundations for Stygian Fair. Erik Andersson joined on bass and Andreas Stoltz on lead vocals & guitar. This first incarnation of the band never made a big mark recording or gig-wise due to life's crooked path. In the autumn of 2016 Erik left the band, and a few weeks later so did Andreas as well. Soon thereafter the band gathered new momentum by welcoming Anders Hedman as the new powerhouse bass player. After a couple of auditions, Pontus Åkerlund became the new singer and with this setting, the band recorded and launched an EP named "Into the Coven". The band began playing live frequently at different local venues. At the end of August 2018, the band entered the studio again, and in October of the same year came the debut "Panta Rei". In January 2020 came the sophomore album "Nadir" and in April 2021 "Equilibrium". In September 2021 Pontus Åkerlund decided to leave the band. A few week's search for a new vocalist lead to the return of Andreas Stoltz as lead vocalist/guitar player, after his years in Binary Creed & Hollow. In late 2022 Stygian Fair entered the studio once again to record ten new powerful songs with Stygian Fair’s trademark strong melodies. It is titled Aradia after the witch Diana's daughter, the goddess of the hunt and the moon.

Album:

With “The Hidden Realm”, Swedish metal act Stygian Fair delivers a bold and introspective new full-length that continues their journey of sonic and lyrical exploration. Known for their emotionally driven and stylistically unfiltered approach to metal, the band follows up 2023’s “Aradia” with an album that feels even more focused, mature and connected — both to their audience and to themselves. At its core, “The Hidden Realm” is a distillation of the band’s identity: honest, uncompromising, melodic, authentic and heavy. Across eleven tracks, Stygian Fair confronts complex emotions and urgent contemporary themes — from societal decay and technological anxiety to personal reckoning, existential questions and the longing for beauty, meaning and connection in a fractured world. The songwriting process reflects the band’s organic approach. Each track originates from riffs, fragments or full song drafts brought into the rehearsal space — but it’s in that collective, creative environment that the ideas truly come alive. “It’s when we get together that the magic takes place” they explain. Parts evolve, elements are added or stripped away and the songs become shared statements, shaped by instinct and trust.Musically, “The Hidden Realm” retains the band’s raw, guitar-driven identity but feels darker, more urgent and more direct than previous efforts. The production is deliberately kept real and dynamic — no backing tracks, no artificial polish — just four musicians chasing the sound that feels right. Whether through the haunting momentum of “Abide Your Master” the introspective weight of “Look Into the Well” or the cathartic power of “Rise From the Shadows” every track serves the album’s emotional depth and thematic focus. The band describes the album as “a sincere expression of our musical and personal journey”. It is their way of connecting — with themselves, with each other and with listeners. “We try to pick out the essentials in life and distill it into words and music” they say. “This album is our collective therapy, our loud release, proving the drive to create doesn’t diminish with experience.”Lyrically, the songs tackle topics like blind obedience, consumerism, AI and technology, identity and spiritual disorientation, often dressed in allegory or mythic tones. The album speaks equally to the mind and to the gut, offering listeners not just a sonic experience but a space to reflect, engage and feel.“Every riff on this album is composed with intention, a deliberate reduction of excess. My work here is focused on the fundamentals, cutting through complexity to reveal essentials.” – Andreas Stoltz .“Each solo was built to fit naturally within the arrangement, ensuring that every note serves a purpose while staying true to the core melody.” – Emil Holmqvist. The band’s lineup features musicians with strong roots in the Scandinavian scene: P-O Jonsson and Emil Holmqvist (formerly of Crave), Anders Hedman (Witch) and Andreas Stoltz (ex-Hollow). Their diverse experiences converge into a cohesive unit that now feels tighter and more inspired than ever.
