Bio:

Yngwie Johan Malmsteen (/ˈɪŋveɪ ˈmɑːlmstiːn/ ING-vay MAHLM-steen; born Lars Johan Yngve Lannerbäck, 30 June 1963) is a Swedish guitarist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and bandleader. Malmsteen became known for his neo-classical playing style in heavy metal.Yngwie J. Malmsteen arrived on the scene in 1983 when he emigrated to America from his native Sweden. Malmsteen created a style - an ear-searing blend of metal bombast and classical beauty that is one of the most immediately recognizable of ALL guitarists. He elevated classical chops to new heights, adding a definite European stamp both dark-sounding and blindingly fast."I've been exposed to classical music since I was five years old," says Yngwie, who was born in Stockholm on June 30, 1963. "My mother listened to Bach so much, and I grew to really love his music. Bach's chord progressions and melodies are the most beautiful things ever written."My family was very musical," he adds. "My sister played flute and piano and my brother played guitar, drums, piano, violin, and accordian. My father even played guitar."Malmsteen maintains that his biggest classical influence is 19th-century violin virtuoso Nicolo Paganini. "I was in my early teens the first time I heard his music," recalls Yngwie," and he's been my idol ever since. I got turned on to him through a Swedish TV show. A Russian violinist was playing some Paganini stuff on the program, and I freaked. I quickly put a portable tape recorder in front of the TV to get it on tape. When I found out later what the guy was playing, I went out and bought Paganiniâs "24 Caprices," which is my all-time favorite thing to listen to."Thatâs how I wanted to play guitar. He did with his instrument what few have ever come close to doing. He was a rock and roller-very wild and very extreme."Yngwie's work overflows with classically influenced playing. His Grammy-nominated debut solo album, "Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force," is regarded by many as the definitive document of neoclassical rock guitar."Those compositions ["Black Star" and "Far Beyond the Sun"] sort of sum up my style," says Yngwie. "There are fast runs, slow harmonies, and some really nice arpeggios in them. Those songs are like icons for me. I'll probably play them until the day I die."Malmsteen first picked up a guitar on September 18, 1970-the day Jimi Hendrix died. "Hendrix did inspire me to play," Yngwie affirms, "but I was more influenced by his image than his music. He looked so cool and was a fantastic performer."Says Yngwie: "I don't think anyone can actually teach someone how to play guitar. The desire should come from inside. Guitar is at a stage where one has to do oneâs own nnovations. Playing electric guitar is not like playing classical violin, which has been around for hundreds of years. To play classical violin, one has to be taught the specific skills needed to perform that particular kind of music. Once you get past the basics needed to play guitar, the rest is up to you."Guitarists with mind-boggling technique can be quite boring on stage, but Malmsteen impresses as well as entertains. He is always in constant motion, whether playing his Stratocaster with his teeth or twirling it around his body.

Album:

Legendary guitar virtuoso YNGWIE MALMSTEEN is set to release his brand new album, “Tokyo Live“, on April 25 via Music Theories Recordings. The incomparable Malmsteen is one of the greatest rock guitarists to ever have lived. So, when the chance comes to witness the maestro in the live setting, you take notice. The concert was recorded at the Zepp DiverCity, Tokyo, on May 11th 2024 as part of his 40th Anniversary World Tour. Calling upon an enormous catalogue of material, Malmsteen shredded his way through a furious set, backed by a mountainous Marshall stack wall. The setlist tracks Malmsteen’s illustrious career, from “Hiroshima Mon Amour” and “Evil Eye” and through his remarkable solo career with “Rising Force,” “Far Beyond The Sun,” “Arpeggios from Hell” and “Seventh Sign” all the way up to his most recent material taken from 2021’s ‘Parabellum,’ with “Wolves At The Door,” “Relentless Fury”, and not to mention rousing renditions of “Paganini’s 4th” and “Smoke on the Water.”Everyone knows that mister Lars Johan Yngve Lannerback, aka Yngwie Malmsteen, is one of the best and certainly one of the fastest guitar players in the world, so you then certainly will know that this new live album will be full of guitar eargasms for sure, again stating that Malmsteen is a legendary guitar virtuoso.Showcasing his impressive career to date, Yngwie’s show features an equally impressive musicianship from his band mates who deserve their own credit – I believe that’s Emilio Martinez handling bass and some vocals, Nick Marino on keys, and Kevin Klingenschmid manning the drums. Their collective effort creates fantastic noise in Japan, perfectly captured in this recording.Multiple releases from Yngwie have crossed our path – some fantastic, others lacking. But when the songs hit, they impact with sledgehammer-to-the-face force. The live show opens with classic Rising Force, and while Yngwie’s vocals certainly deliver, guest appearances from original vocalist Jeff Scott Soto, Joe, and others would have benefited this special performance. After all, your identity forms from the sum of parts, and Yngwie’s global popularity rose considerably when he transitioned from instrumental to vocal-led albums.Despite the absence of vocalists like Mark Boals, Göran Edman, Michael Vescera, Mats Levén, Doogie White, Tim “Ripper” Owens, or Jeff (aside from saving on Tokyo airfares for everyone), Yngwie deserves credit for his vocal efforts. While he might not shatter glass, he maintains his own well, with passionate vocals that complement the songs effectively. The guitar work naturally takes center stage, with the mix accentuating this unsurprisingly. Yngwie clearly plays at level 11, sounding at least one louder than everyone else.
