Bio:
Pioneer of the guitar on the internet, Laura Cox has led the way for many young guitarists and is now at the forefront of the current landscape of guitarists in France and beyond. From bedroom recordings of Sweet Home Alabama [Lynyrd Skynyrd] and alikes uploaded on YouTube as early as 2008, she gathered a loyal following of half a million subscribers and her re-interpretations of classic rock songs (that also feature her on the banjo, lapsteel or bass) have reached more than 100 million viewers across the globe. The multi-instrumentalist is one of the few artists who managed to break out of the virtual bubble and bring her musical vision to life with her own band: After two albums released in 2017 and 2019 (Verycords/Warner) and having played the biggest, most prominent stages for rock music in France (Hellfest, Download Festival, Guitare en Scène, etc.), Laura Cox is now back with "Head Above Water", a long-awaited album with a more personal take and a solid anchoring in rock. This third studio album proves once again that Laura knows how to re-invent herself while she is revealing new facets of her musical talent. Recorded at the renowned ICP studios in Brussels, and mastered by Ted Jensen (The Eagles, The Rolling Stones, etc.), "Head Above Water" is ready to rock the boat. In her riffs and solos, Laura masters both flow and precision and her playing clearly shows that this woman knows how to take a guitar apart. Blending classic rock with bluegrass elements in an unparalleled ease, Laura Cox once again illustrates that she will remain a driving force in a new generation of rock guitarists in the years to come.
Album:
Anglo-French guitarist, singer, and songwriter Laura Cox will release her highly anticipated fourth studio album “Trouble Coming” on October 31st, 2025, via earMusic.Laura Cox continues to draw on classic rock, but blends it with more modern elements on her new album, as in the opener “Try Harder” or even more audibly in the following powerful “A Way Home.” Traditional riffs are combined with catchy melodies, accompanied by the youthful vocals of the 34-year-old, resulting in a cocktail that doesn't deter younger listeners. Nor does it deter me. A healthy hardness, as on the debut “Hard Blues Shot” under the name LAURA COX BAND and her 2019 debut as a solo artist, “Burning Bright,” and also partly on the previous album, “Head Above Water,” is still audible. She doesn't bow down to mainstream listeners, but she doesn't step on their toes either.Of course, there's nothing wrong with a certain degree of development, which was already evident on “Head Above Water” and ultimately represents a certain professionalization in songwriting. Here, too, there is no clever marketing team at work, but rather an artist who simply brings different musical influences to the table. And the story of how she reached over 100 million viewers with cover versions produced in her own room. But that was a few years and a few albums ago.The title track “Trouble Coming” is another good example of her unique musical style, which doesn't care about conventions and labels. “Inside The Storm” has a good mix of catchiness and straight rock with an energetic beat, making the song “club-ready.” Even gentler songs like “What Do You Know” or the beautiful, hit-worthy “Out Of The Blue” come easily to Laura's hands and voice.Perhaps her French-influenced English (according to her, her English father did not teach her the language) combined with her original voice helps her to incorporate her own characteristics into the songs. This means that songs like “The Broken” or the punk-inspired “Do I Have Your Attention?” come across as fresh and entertaining despite their relatively high cliché content and rather conventional riffs. She also uses her solo guitar playing much more sparingly, but to great effect. The production is crisp, raw, and yet clear. Laura has taken a small but significant step forward from her previous album, even if the stormy freshness of the first two albums has given way to greater professionalism and modernity. Although she says she is more of an introvert, she comes across as very extroverted and confident on album no. 4. This is also evident in her live performances, which have even made it to Rockpalast. In her videos, she usually relies solely on her guitar playing, singing, and music.
