Bio:
Sodom is a German thrash metal band from Gelsenkirchen, formed in 1981.Along with the bands Kreator, Destruction and Tankard, Sodom is considered one of the "The Big Teutonic Four" of Teutonic thrash metal. While three bands except Tankard created a sound that would influence death metal, Sodom's early music style would greatly influence many late-1980s and early-1990s black metal bands, among others. In the early days Sodom's lyrics focused on Satanic and occult themes but war soon became their main subject. This led some people to think that the band was militarist, but on closer observation the reader would find the lyrics actually being anti-war. In an interview with Metalkings.com Tom Angelripper said: "Why are we writing about war? Because we don’t want war. We wanna describe how bad the war is.The chorus of the song Ausgebombt also gives a very clear message: "No trade with death, No trade with arms, Dispense the war, Learn from the past.
Album:
We finally have new material from Sodom. I was genuinely excited, having seen them live a few months ago. I was impressed by how they performed — extremely tight without losing the aggression and speed that characterises them, especially on their earlier material. It made me wonder how new songs would sound. Although they had already released 40 Years at War, that was technically a re-recorded compilation, not entirely new material.A few weeks later, they dropped the single “Trigger Discipline”, and I saw a lot of YouTube comments comparing it to Slayer, mainly due to the vocal style T. Angelripper used. However, we’ve heard him sing in similar registers before. Personally, I’ve never found much Slayer influence in Sodom’s sound. I think they’re more rooted in punk, heavy metal, and even death metal in some albums. That said, both bands do share a certain brutality — and perhaps underappreciation — within their respective Big Fours. If anything, Sodom reminds me more of Motörhead: not the most mainstream act in their scene, but with a loyal fanbase and a large, varied discography that may not reinvent the genre but keeps it interesting. As for the production, I’d say this is the best-sounding album in Sodom’s entire career. They used tape recording, and the result is excellent. The drums are a clear highlight — the snare has a powerful punch, and the recording is detailed enough to hear rimshots and accents clearly. Since tape was used, the kick drum isn’t as prominent as in modern metal recordings, but this adds a very old school touch — it reminds me of Slayer’s Reign in Blood. My only complaint is that the hi-hat sounds slightly overexposed at times, while the ride cymbal is somewhat buried in the mix, though it shines in a few sections. The guitars aren’t quite as forward in the mix as they might be on a Kreator or Destruction album, but they are well defined, free of muddiness, and very enjoyable. As for Angelripper’s vocals and bass, they’re solid — though unlike Genesis XIX, the bass has fewer standout moments here.Songwriting-wise, the tracks are concise and build naturally on what was explored in Genesis XIX. The songs are shorter, but retain newer elements like blast beats. The album has a distinct old school vibe, but with more depth than your average thrash release. Some ideas from EPs like Partisan return — punk influences are clear, from the riff style to the D-beat-like drums. The album is mostly fast-paced, though a few mid-tempo tracks with catchy riffs offer balance. All in all, this is a very strong record that captures the essence of the “new Sodom” following their post-Decision Day lineup change. It brings back ideas from recent EPs and, if Angelripper’s recent comments are anything to go by, might be the last album we get for a while. But even if it is, it would be a brilliant send-off — a tight, aggressive, and most importantly, fun album to listen to.
