Bio:
HEATHEN’S EYE is a new Swedish Melodic Metal band which incorporates many different influences from the fields of AOR, melodic rock and progressive into its sound. Most band members live in the beautiful north, the land of snow, aurora borealis, months of eternal darkness in the winter, and warm days when the sun never sets in the summer. These contrasts are also reflected in the music of HEATHEN’S EYE which spans over heavy rock, airy ballads and progressive metal. The band features five experienced musicians with a background in several genres. It consists of Göran Hamrin (song writer and guitar), Jonas Jönsson (drums), Mikael Andersson (keys), Ola Hellström, (bass) and Robb Lindh (vocals). In HEATHEN’S EYE their wide experience is fused together into a unique sound that expands the borders of Hard Rock. Many of the Scandinavians' influences come from the 80s and 90s and from bands like like Queensrÿche, Accept and Lynch Mob, but at the same time it pushes the boundaries of progressive rock further into the future. The name of the album, Port Inspiro, “Inspired by the past” in Esperanto, is a tribute to the bands that led HEATHEN’S EYE onto the path they are on today.
Album:
Here's the debut album from HEATHEN'S EYE, a new...Swedish band! Again, you say, and I can already see you muttering that Scandinavian music is always a bit the same! Let me stop you right there, because there are so many nuances to this music. Can you really compare the practically heavy hard music of bands like JD MILLER or GINEVRA with the rather delicate AOR of BOYS FROM HEAVEN, for example? There's actually a lot more variety than you might think from the outside. The band is made up of 5 musicians, who I'm told have a great deal of musical experience in various genres. They're advertised as playing melodic metal, but I find that appellation a little too restrictive. I'd call it a melting-pot of multiple references, which can be a bit confusing, I agree. But you must be beginning to know that it's precisely this fusion of styles that attracted me. Throughout the album, you'll find progressive rock, melodic hard rock, hard ‘n blues, AOR, heavy metal and... I'll stop there! So, with so much diversity, the only question is: Doesn't this detract from the band's musical unity? Well, I'd say that's what makes this album so special. For once, I'm not going to analyse the tracks in chronological order, because I really wanted to highlight a track that I really enjoyed, which doesn't open the album. It's called Is It Over Now. There are so many great things about this track that I still can't believe how rich it is! It's my favourite track on the album, hands down! Why do you ask? Firstly, because the singer, Robb LINDH, gives a first-class, top-class performance. He reminds me of the great Steve Walsh, the singer of KANSAS, especially on the choruses. The verses, meanwhile, are pure AOR, to be savoured without moderation. Yes, that's right, I'm somewhere between the most Swedish AOR and American prog rock, STYX style, as far as the melody is concerned, a pure marvel for me. What a track, my friends! Let's keep the momentum going with the next track, Endless Lines. It's melodic hard rock just the way I like it, with an unstoppable chorus that has the Swedish stamp of approval all over it. The musicians really get the rhythm down, and then there's the vocals, which soar over the whole thing with such ease and mastery. I'm also thinking of the immense Jeff Scott SOTO, lead singer of W.E.T. among others. There's an unbridled solo played in a WISHBONE ASH-style twin, so I'm in heaven! It's totally melodic and I approve 100%. When Robb LINDH hits the high notes, I can't believe how perfectly controlled the vocals are! I notice that the keyboards come in a bit more towards the end of the track.I'll make no secret of the fact that I'm really excited by this debut album from HEATHEN'S EYE, which shows a great deal of maturity in its songwriting. There's an hour's worth of quality music here, which is a great gift! Various influences are present, but they are impeccably digested. In conclusion, I can say loud and clear that this band has enormous potential, and something tells me we're going to be hearing a lot more about them for a long time to come! The album comes out on 27 June.
