Bio:
Stygian Path is an epic heavy metal band from Athens, Greece.Formed in 2022 by its 5 members sharing the same passion for metal music with a background of more than 10 years of involvement in other rock/metal projects, both amateur and professional (ex-Emerald Dream, ex-Deified, Sunlight).Having achieved the great honor to open for the Chania Rock Festival 2024 and share the stage with legendary bands like Exodus and Blind Guardian, they have recently finished recording their debut album. ‘The Lorekeeper’, produced, mixed and mastered by the refined touch of George Emmanuel (Lucifer’s Child, ex-Rotting Christ), brings forth a storm of riffs, a landscape of melodies, sinister theatrics, emotional moments and pompous choruses of stories inspired by the Mythos, the history and the human nature.Debut album "The Lorekeeper" (2025).
Album:
Debut full-length album. The Greek scene is currently producing a lot of interesting heavy metal bands, which is certainly also due to festivals like UP THE HAMMERS and labels like NO REMORSE, CULT METAL CLASSICS, FLOGA, ALONE or SONIC AGE. In the recent past, LEATHERHEAD, TRIUMPHER, SILENT WINTER or YOTH IRIA come to mind, who have recently released strong releases. The quintet from Athens have been around since 2022 and present their debut album ‘The Lorekeeper’. They combine anthemic epic metal with folk influences. Stylistically, old MANOWAR, old WARLORD and IRON MAIDEN shimmer through. The strong guitar work in particular is immediately noticeable. The intro is followed by ‘Prometheus’, which represents the band's style quite well and prepares the listener for what awaits them in the following 38 minutes. The numerous instrumental passages play with tempo and rhythms, but always remain comprehensible and are usually not too convoluted. Sometimes the transition is a little bumpy, as in the folky ‘Tides Of Time’, where an acoustic guitar suddenly appears out of nowhere, deepening the theme before a solo guitar breaks through the quiet passage and leads the song back to heaviness. But it always remains varied and interesting. The eight-minute ‘Rhapsody - The Eagle And The Lion’ has a great structure: An acoustic passage opens the song before it gets heavy and fast. Suddenly the tempo is slowed down more and more before it becomes mysterious and melodic. But only until enough tension has built up, then it gets fast and heavy before you find yourself in a doom part that reminds you of SOLITUDE AETURNUS with its melodic guitars. An exciting song that tells an interesting musical story.‘The Wanderer’ sounds completely different again and is basically a folk song with some heavy guitars, but remains mostly acoustic - except for the last minute, where the tempo picks up and the song takes a heavy turn - nevertheless a song with ballad potential. The almost nine-minute-long ‘Unholy Land’ is particularly epic and anthemic, but also complex. A lot of ideas are used here - a little too many for my taste. The song thrives on its drama and is very entertaining, but also overwhelms the listener a little and seems overloaded here and there. Just like the almost eight-minute ‘Chateau Du Deuil’ that follows, which seems disorganised, too playful and disjointed. The production is powerful and transparent. All instruments are given their space to unfold.
