Bio:

Hex Crow is a Heavy Metal band from Colombia, founded by bass player and singer Daniel Mantilla (former ADS, Hatred & Perjurio) , Guitar player Sebastián López (former Perjurio & Hatred) and drummer Felipe Ortega (former Aspid & Hatred). Hex Crow has released a three songs demo in 2016, a full length album named Creatures of the Night released in 2018 and tape EP Forward to the Past in 2020.

Album:

Second full-length album. The Last Scribe on CD will be available from 1 March 2025. Colombian Hex Crow released a truly great debut in the form of ‘Creatures Of the Night’ in 2018. It was an album full of classic patents, 80s atmosphere, simple and feisty riffs, all modelled on the achievements of iron maiden, saxon, angel witch or Judas Priest. Now, after a seven-year hiatus, the time has come for the band's second album and ‘The Last Scibe’ was released on 7 February. The cover is a bit of a deterrent, but how about the content? This time, however, you can feel that it is not of the same class as the debut. Daniel Mantilla's voice can be annoying at times, and sometimes lacks the necessary sophistication and technical background. Guitarist Lopez does not stand out in any special way and follows the usual patterns. It is fast, dynamic, melodic and classic. It's all good, perhaps, but it doesn't stand out from the strong competition. Solid craftsmanship that has flashes.Certainly the beginning here is played out with an idea. The album opens with the sprawling ‘Church of Madness’, which draws handfuls from NWOBHM. The heavy/speed metal structure here works as well as it could. Then the upbeat ‘The Patriarchs’ enters, which impresses with speed and patents taken out of the first Iron maiden albums. Again, it is classic, but with an idea. Similar emotions are evoked by ‘Purple Fire’, which has similar qualities. ‘Creed or cause’ starts blandly and, although it is better, a drop in form can be heard. Speed metal we have in ‘Blood Omen’, a bit of motorhead in ‘Slay the tyrants’ and some Judas Priest or Black Sabbath in ‘Dust on Leather’. The whole thing is topped off with ‘Disobedience’, which again takes us into speed metal territory. Just a solid track, without much surprise. The clichéd formula and duplicity spoil the effect a little.‘The Last Scribe’ is unfortunately a drop in form compared to the debut. This time we get weaker compositions, a much lower quality sound and the melodies themselves are not very impressive either. An album in the series to listen to and forget.
