Bio:
Band formed in 2021 in Monheim am Rhein, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germay.Rigorious's sound is heavy power metal with synth and orchestral elements. The powerful and at the same time driving songs of the band from Monheim are completed by melodic, but sometimes also rough vocals with shouted parts in between. Singer Lukas does not have a classic power metal voice in the falsetto range, but moves from clean to rough over 3 octaves, mostly in the low midrange. Guitarist Christopher stands out with his powerful riffing, his catchy voice and his harmonic backing vocals. On bass Sebastian brings in independent but not overburdening, catchy basslines, as well as a second clean backing voice. For particularly hard parts, the shouts also come from him. The second Lukas and lead guitarist of the band founded in 2021 gets his high recognition value by his fast, expressive and classic solo sound, as well as by his tendency to compose great hooks again and again. On drums, Paul provides piercing double bass passages, driving grooves and powerful fills. At the same time, he manages not to overload the arrangements and to give the string instruments plenty of room to unfold. Their 10-song debut album "Night of Retribution", which was produced by none other than Chris Boltendahl (), offers sounds in the style of to with a vocal style that you will recognize on second hearing and was released on November 10th 2023.
Album:
Second full-length album.RIGORIOUS describe themselves as a power metal combo with symphonic elements, and with a slightly coarser lens, one could certainly agree with this style description. The band from Monheim hasn't been around for very long, and this circumstance may also explain various inadequacies in the songwriting, which are still clearly evident on the young band's new album. For one thing, not a single song on ‘Kingdom Unfold’ succeeds in establishing real barbs or at least professionalising the melodic substructure to such an extent that you at least get the slight feeling that you might have to sing along or at least hum along. On the other hand, the production of the new disc is relatively lacking in juice, so that the extensive keyboards don't fill out the symphonic framework, the guitars don't develop any crunch and the drums are given an organic sound that could create a little more pressure. To make matters worse, it has to be said that RIGORIOUS' vocals are still far from the upper leagues. Frontman Lukas is not only very limited, but his mostly bland performance is in no way capable of developing anything stirring. He lacks power, expressiveness and volume. As the material on ‘Kingdom Unfold’ relies heavily on the vocals and the frontman is somehow omnipresent, there are considerable cuts and limits that make the leap into the first class impossible for the moment. You really don't want to harm young, motivated combos, especially as you can tell that RIGORIOUS have their hearts in the matter. But for the reasons mentioned, a record like ‘Kingdom Unfold’ is hardly competitive at the moment and is doomed to be lost in the crowd. With the best will in the world, there is still a lot to be optimised here in order to be able to play a role in the future.
