Bio:

Atrophy is a thrash metal band formed in 1986 in Tucson, Arizona, USA by Chris Lykins, James Gulotta, and Brian Zimmerman. The original bandname was Heresy, but by the time the band was rounded out to its professional line-up – with Tim Kelly and Rick Skowron joining the fold – the name was changed. In 1987, the band produced two cassette demos and were subsequently picked up by major thrash metal specialist label, Roadrunner Records. They recorded two albums – Socialized Hate in 1988, and Violent By Nature in 1990 – and toured the USA and Europe with fellow Arizonans Sacred Reich and Swiss band, Coroner.Following the European tour, Chris Lykins left the band to go to medical school. The band attempted to carry on with new members and even got so far as making a pre-production tape for a third album, but Roadrunner Records lost confidence in the band – Chris Lykins was one of the main songwriters – and they were dropped by the label as a consequence.Tim Kelly and James Gulotta went on to form a band called "Head Circus", which Rick Skowron is also a member of intermittently, but they have yet to record a studio album.Chris Lykins completed medical school and is now an ENT, James Gulotta runs a tile business, and Rick Skowron is an avionics engineer and avid motorcycle racer. In 2015, Atrophy reformed with a new lineup, including three original members (Zimmerman, Gulotta and Kelly) and the replacements of Lykins and Skowron (Casper Garret and Rich Olsen, who was later replaced by Bobby Stein). However, Zimmerman departed from the band in 2020 following a European tour being cut short by COVID-19, causing the band to go on indefinite hiatus. The surviving members of the first reformation recruited another vocalist and went under the name Scars of Atrophy. After a few months of hiatus, Zimmerman reformed Atrophy with a completely different lineup, consisting of guitarists Mark Coglan and Nathan Montalvo, Malevolent Creation bassist Josh Gibbs, and drummer Sage Johnson.

Album:

34 years since their latest album "Violent By Nature", released in 1990, Tucson, Arizona-based thrash metal titans ATROPHY return with a brand new album. "Asylum" will be unleashed on March 15, 2024 via Massacre Records."Asylum" marks the next evolutionary step for ATROPHY. Keeping the speed of "Socialized Hate" and the grooves of "Violent By Nature", this album adds a big dose of heaviness to the mix resulting in a satisfying aural kick in your face.ATROPHY has premiered a lyric video for the first single from "Asylum", the album opening track "Punishment For All". Check it out below.ATROPHY frontman Brian Zimmerman states about the track: "'Punishment For All' was inspired by the attempted insurrection on January 6 (2021) with COVID-19 restrictions still in play. To sit in my living room and watch this unfold was almost too much to bear. Americans were at each other's throats, calling people traitors, or trying to undermine democracy and not believing in the results of the election, following the myriad conspiracy theories that were swirling around at the time. I thought to myself, what if they were successful? What are we, as a country divided, going to do then? Take down everything we have built together as a country? What are we putting in place? Are we just going to do whatever the loudest people tell us to do? The whole thing was just absolutely crazy.""Asylum" was produced, mixed and mastered by Alex Parra at Second Sight Studio.
