Bio:

LORD VOLTURE are a Dutch heavy metal outfit in the tradition of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Iced Earth, led by vocalist David Marcelis. After an explosive take-off in 2010 with the release of debut album ‘Beast Of Thunder’ (feat. Jeff Waters of Annihilator) the band rapidly rises to find themselves in the frontier of Dutch Heavy Metal. With their sophomore release ‘Never Cry Wolf’ (feat. Sean Peck of Cage) in 2011 the band set their definitive style while increasingly gaining recognition everywhere they’re heard. The album thunders through the global metal community and reviewers worldwide count the album among the best releases of 2011. This massive exposure opens doors to many festivals and support slots and, as a result, LORD VOLTURE have shared the stage with Primal Fear, Firewind, Tim Ripper Owens, Blaze Bayley, Vicious Rumors, Tygers Of Pan Tang, Tokyo Blade, Enforcer and numerous others, while touring through the larger part of Europe. A new head-on LORD VOLTURE metal album entitled “Will To Power” was released in September 2014 on Mausoleum Records. The album contains 9 killer songs and a guest appearance by former Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland. Sharper than ever, the band are ready to unleash their third chapter of high-pitched power vocals and mind boggling guitar solos onto the world. For all who bear a heart of steel, LORD VOLTURE is a definite MUST!

Album:

It appears I selected Lord Vulture's Live 'Em Up concert recordings simply to make a linguistic quip, yet there's more to it. Back in the early nineties, upon unearthing Iron Maiden (and, to a jocose extent, Gwar) from fellow nerdy classmates, I madly pedalled to nearest Sam The Record Man to buy my first CDs ever, both the immortalized Powerslave and subsequent Live After Death. Little did I know the latter was basically an absorption of the former, with a few golden oldies thrown in for good measure. It's funny looking at it now but at the time, I was rather contrite, simultaneously feeling blessed to discover such melodically stimulating music while falling short, quantity wise. This is probably why I'm not the biggest live album fan, despite stumbling into odd gems like Thin Lizzy's extensive Live And Dangerous, UFO's hyper-dexterous Strangers In The Night or Vardis' bonkers 100 M.P.H.Regardless, the twin guitar Netherlands quintet bangs heads and pumps fists since 2010, when it released the masterful Beast Of Thunder (long since hailed by a certain Paralyzer). Skip over follow-ups Never Cry Wolf and mysteriously unheralded Will To Power, and we finally arrive at a pair of post Covid singles and this energetic monster show. Actually, during my virgin listen, I surmised that crowd sounds were artificially looped in to give a "live" feel, much like ridiculous old time head scratcher, A II Z's 1980 The Witch Of Berkeley. Thankfully, such nutty notion dissipates once gruff, shouty front man David convincingly entreats the audience between songs.Completing the classic line-up, axe dudes Paul and Leon are joined by bassist Simon and drummer Frank in turning out their forceful power move - as in, there's no longer any excuse for the carrion munching avian god to cruise below our radar. Hell, the opening wallop, "Where The Enemy Sleep", roars out of the gate with similar fetching thrust as Night Demon throughout its groundbreaking Darkness Remains from 2017. Again, unless you pay close attention to the title, it takes a while to realize the material doesn't originate from a fast food detritus strewn studio. Then, the Maiden-esque in name and tone "Minutes To Madness" plumply features the low end in top shape as it supplies chunky heft needed for auditory synapse collapsing leads. In addition, its slightly cybernetic vibe harks to the ceaselessly influential Brits' Dehumanizer equivalent in terms of evolution, 1995's blazing The X Factor.Dutchophiles then get their rocks off ahead of "Will To Power" - fine complement to Nightmare's "Will To Overpower" - as David blasts the faithful gathering with his rapid-fire, yet incomprehensible spew (even if somewhere I caught the brow furrowing word "bazooka"). Another instance where our charismatic cantor woos us is in the midst of epic "Taiga", when it joins in for the hauntingly regal refrain, which mildly brings to mind a more averted and less whack Helvetet's Port. There's even a slick bass solo to chew on at one point. "Wendigo" is another worth trekking through the ice and snow towards, with its rangy and taut manoeuvres, alongside Dave's wild gesticulations. In other words, consider it a top single contender in the celeritous vein of "Aces High" or "Number Of The Beast".The pace picks up evermore on straightforward, shortest track "My Sworn Enemy", which literally evokes Virginia's Volture, be it early Brent Hubbard or late Jack Bauer incarnation, while also featuring a helluva spicy dual lead trade-off. Never mind the stiffly introducing a cappella of "Line 'Em Up"; Lord Vulture rules next to fellow European monoliths Enforcer, RAM and Wolf. As a parting note, it's worth mentioning Live' Em Up was recorded in various venues across England and Belgium. Hopefully, the gang includes far-from-metallized Victoria, British Columbia in its travels, soon enough.
