Tarja Turunen is a Finnish lyric soprano singer, songwriter and composer. She is best known as the original member and the former lead vocalist of Finnish operatic/symphonic power metal band Nightwish, founded by herself, Tuomas Holopainen and Emppu Vuorinen in 1996. She was dismissed from the band after nine years, on October 22, 2005, through an open letter written by Holopainen, that was signed by the other members of Nightwish too. Turunen responded through another open letter, which was posted on her website in both Finnish and English.The journey has just begun...

Yes, the days are getting shorter and darker and that means the Christmas songs are slowly being brought out too. OK, so at the beginning of November it feels a bit weird, but the fact is that Tarja is coming out with her Christmas album called Dark Christmas. That release sees the light of day via earMusic.Of course, Tarja, whose full name is Tarja Soile Susanna Turunen Cabuli, needs no introduction. The Nightwish icon, who left the band some 20 years ago now, knows how to wrap many a music lover around her fingers with her velvety voice with playful ease. Solo, she has now also released quite a few albums, on which her vocal prowess remains great time and again.So now the Finnish has recorded a Christmas album. A lot can be found of that and looking at the tracklist, one must also conclude that tracks that can be heard more than abundantly on various radio stations around Christmas are also richly represented here. Still, there is one bright spot that does warrant a listen to this record. After all, Tarja doesn't call the album Dark Christmas for nothing.In 2017, Tarja already released a Christmas record under the title From Spirits And Ghosts (Score For A Dark Christmas). However, the Christmas repertoire contains many more well-known songs, which is also evident on Dark Christmas. Numerous traditional songs pass by. 'Frosty The Snowman', 'The First Noel', 'Rudolph The Red-nosed Reindeer' and 'O Holy Night', among others, are on it, though with the pure signature an Tarja.With 'Dark Christmas', Tarja has also recorded a Christmas song of her own. The dark side is nicely showcased through her skills as a soprano, but this track will not be a blockbuster. Her interpretation of 'Jingle Bell Rock' still harbours influences that fans of Nightwish love. The grotesque is in there nicely. 'All I Want For Christmas Is You', yes, by Mariah Carey, also takes on a darker tone and also slows things down here. As a result, the vocals mostly take the spotlight, rather than the original rousing rhythm. When a few more instruments are brought in during the course of the song, it becomes clear that Tarja has clearly chosen to be more immersive, giving it a grotesque feel. Wham's 'Last Christmas' has also been performed countless times, but even here Tarja really knows how to turn it into something unique.Christmas records are things one either likes or dislikes, but Tarja ensures with Dark Christmas that she can actually pull the classics into realms beyond Christmas. Rather for with a good glass of red wine than during Christmas.
