Bio:

Ironflame is a power metal band from Washington, Pennsylvania. It’s a solo project made by the one and only Andrew D’Cagna who is also a member of Brimstone Coven. His new debut album ‘Lightning Strikes The Crown’ got released via bandcamp and it features a whole bunch of amazing guests. Jim Dofka (Rev Jones Band, Leather Leone) for example created the guitar solo on the song ”Firestorm” & ”Fallen Glory”, He isn’t the only guest that took part in the powerful solo’s, Aaron Carey (Coldfells), Justin Wood (Ex-Brimstone Cove, Necromancing the Stone) and last but not least Johnathan Crow (Curse The Wicked). Aaron took care of the guitar solo in ”Marching” and ”Shadow Queen” where Justin got a hold on the solo’s in ”The Gorgon” and my personal favorite song ”Eternal Night”. The best 2 songs on the album, ”Heavy Metal Warriors” and ”What We’ve Sown”, features guitarist Johnathan on the guitar playing mad solo’s. Never have I heard of an album with so many different guitarists but it works out really well! The lyrics and everything else has been the work of Andrew himself. He really is capable of a lot! ‘Lightning Strikes The Crown’ has been released via bandcamp on the 22th of May and for a first album this is incredibly good. The power of the album is without a doubt in the wide diversity of musicians.

Album:

Having offered subtle variations on a speedy and highly melodic power metal template on their first three albums, Ironflame’s fourth full-length sees a different attitude starting to take hold. Where Madness Dwells is still in line with the project’s established Maiden inspiration but also continues the more aggressive shift that was hinted at in 2020’s Blood Red Victory. The lyrics have also taken on a more cynical air as the personal themes provide some contrast from their previously established tales of fantasy escapism and heavy metal glory.Moving beyond the Vincent Price samples that bookend the album, “A Funeral Within” provides the first notable outlier halfway through, slowing down to a mid-tempo pace after the opening songs’ speeds with the guitars providing hefty chugs and more ominous lead work. “The Phantom Fire” might be the most cynical track of the lot as the intense guitars, sharper vocals, and double bass drumming do a lot to reinforce its righteous ‘fuck your job’ theming.Of course, there’s still room for plenty of those signature Ironflame anthems to keep shining through, especially during the album’s first half. “Under the Spell” puts in the most effective hooks reminiscent of Riot or Helloween and while the chorus on “Ready to Strike” comes off as perhaps a little too simple, it’ll work its way into your head with time. The title track also serves up some mid-tempo flavor from the triumphant side, closing the album out on a hearty gallop and uplifting solos.Where Madness Dwells might be just a hair shy of the tremendous streak seen with Ironflame’s first three albums, but it ultimately manages to be another strong classic metal work. While the band’s development is still so gradual as to not feel too drastic between releases, the bitter touch behind certain tracks helps give it a distinct character while still doing service to the engaging hooks and tight musicianship. At the very least, Ironflame retains their title as perhaps the most consistent band in the whole NWOTHM movement.
