John Terry Norum (born 23 February 1964 in Vardø, Norway) is a rock music guitarist and founder of the Swedish rock band Europe. Concurrent to his role with Europe, he also maintains a side solo project.During his career in music, Norum has also played with Eddie Meduza & The Roaring Cadillacs, Dokken, Don Dokken's solo band, as well as collaborations with other well-known artists in his solo albums, including Glenn Hughes, Kelly Keeling, Peter Baltes, Simon Wright and Göran Edman. Norum is considered by many to be a very underrated guitarist.With influences like Gary Moore, Frank Marino and Michael Schenker, his playing has its roots in the blues. But what he is best known for is the passion he puts into his playing, together with extreme preciseness and a great tone. Joey Tempest once said “John Norum is like a man possessed. On stage he performs as if channeling the guitar greats of the 60′s and 70′s that have served to inspire him. But he always delivers in his own unique style, with a hint of blues, of course. I can think of a few other guitarists that play with as much feeling and passion as John.” While living for a few years in the United States, he met and married Michelle Meldrum in 1995, founder and lead guitarist of the all female hard rock band Phantom Blue and the Swedish metal band Meldrum.The couple had one son, Jake Thomas, born on September 22, 2004. Michelle died on May 21, 2008 from a cystic growth in her brain.n April 16, 2012 he had a son, Jim Henry, from his Swedish fiancée Camilla Wåhlander. The couple had also a daughter, Celine Margareta, born on July 28, 2014.John Norum is the older brother of singer Tone Norum.and his stepfather is Thomas Witt, a former record producer, Columbia executive and drummer for Eddie Meduza.His guitar goes through the Wah into the chorus pedal, from where the separate outputs connect to the two amp heads, with the delay connected in the effects loop of the JCM 800 only.

JOHN NORUM is set to release his 9th solo album titled ‘Gone To Stay’ in October later this year. Mostly known as the founder and lead guitarist from the rock band Europe that quickly took the name as Sweden’s biggest rock export with the songs ‘The Final Countdown’, ‘Carrie’ and ‘Rock The Night’, and has sold over 10 million albums worldwide. Furthermore, Norum has collaborated with many known musicians such as Don Dokken, Marcel Jacob and Glenn Hughes to name a few.As advance, Norum has just released today the EP ”Voices Of Silence”. The title track is rocking song filled with hard hitting riffs and showcasing Norum’s characteristic classic rock songwriting, guitar playing and singing voice.Then there’s ‘Sail On’, a more midpaced tune with a groovy guitar work and a bluesy background.While waiting for a possible new Europe album in 2023, and prior to the beginning of the preparations for the 40th anniversary tour of the release of «The Final Countdown», John Norum has decided to liven up the wait with what will be his ninth solo album. And that is always good news, since we find ourselves, at least in my opinion, before one of the most unjustly underrated guitarists in the hard rock world and who, despite his enormous talent and versatility, never reached the status of guitar hero that some of his generation mates did.Not only is he the author of some of the most iconic and memorable guitar solos in rock, such as those composed for «The Final Countdown» or «Rock The Night», but when the time came he did not hesitate to put the best of his talent at the service of giants such as Don Dokken, with whom he signed the wonderful «Up From The Ashes» (1990), besides releasing great solo works, such as the huge «Face The Truth» (1992).On this occasion it is presented in power trio format, with Norum himself taking care of the guitar and vocal duties, as well as being involved in the production process. Everything seems to have been pampered to the detail, already from the very image of the cover, with those ochre tints, that prepares us for a crepuscular album, of heavy and dense hard rock, sometimes a little nostalgic, that perhaps will not enter at the first listening but that, like a good whiskey, it is necessary to taste little by little in search of the diverse shades.The theme that welcomes us is none other than «Voices Of Silence», of which we had already seen a video clip and that starts with the sound of a rudimentary music box, giving way soon to a torrent in the form of riff in the purest Whitesnake school, which Norum accompanies with a torn and brassy vocal register that drinks from David Coverdale himself as well as Chris Cornell.«Sail On» was chosen as the first advance single and was also accompanied by a spectacular video clip in which Norum dresses as a Viking and walks his guitar aboard a drakkar. A song that starts off serious and calm before bursting into a riff that sounds like a steamroller, on which Norum unleashes like never before.«Gone To Stay» recovers the sound of the 70’s, the funk, blues and psychedelia of Frank Marino, Jimmy Hendrix or the first Stones. A song that could perfectly have been signed by his former partner Glenn Hughes, with a register in which he seems to feel particularly comfortable and that he recovers in the also outstanding «What Do You Want».The surprise comes with the beautiful ballad «One By One», the last of the singles to appear and which features the voice of an Age Sten Nilsen (Wig Wam) in a state of grace, which makes this one of the most accessible and commercial songs.The second part of the album starts in a solemn way with the evocative piano of «Lady Grinning Soul», a delight in which our protagonist explores higher vocal registers and abandons himself to an exercise of melancholy, before giving way to the sharp notes of «Norma», in which we find again the unmistakable voice of Age, in one of the most aggressive tracks of the work.«Calling» is presented as one of the most mysterious tracks of the album, in which Norum abandons the usual pentatonic scale to enter into more exotic sonorities that give the theme a particular atmosphere of anguish.Then follows «Terror Over Me», third and last cut in which Age Sten Nilsen collaborates, this time sharing vocal duties with his good friend, in what ends up being one of the most dynamic and clearly hard rocker themes of the album, rounded off by some easily addictive choruses.And we finish with a revision of their classic «Face The Truth», a version lowered in revolutions and far away from that canon that opened their homonymous album with a Glenn Hughes that shone again. This new version embraces a much warmer and soulful register, a simply delightful approach, to listen to and let yourself go.
