Steelwitch is a heavy / power metal band from Athens Greece.Not to be confused with quirky and arcane Czech Steel Witch solo formation is recent Athens duo, presented herewith, back in Covidland(ed) March, courtesy of Greece's iconic Cult Metal Classics Records (think antiquated, "steely" fare akin to Argus, Brainfever, Cerebus, Ivory Tiger, Jonah Quizz, Neptune, Voltz) and author of eponymous, pentamerous EP totalling almost half-an-hour of rampantly moshing, treble-charged albeit bass-heavy, rising thumpers, from bloodily spilled, triplet based, galloping snow cruncher of an opener in "Last Winter's Day", to "Steelwitch" namesake/closer.Nosebleeds and ensorcelling spells aside, dig this outfit's sinister and chthonic, no frills veneer, somewhat reminiscent of a darker, more vestigial (in curses) Stormburner or Metal Raider, of Swedish "nwothm" school...In fact, throughout mid-p(l)ace, kinetic rompers "Cursed Dreams", "A Legacy Of Swords" and "Moonlight Whispers", due to seasoned frontman's bevelled mid-to-high range, one is starkly reminded of a much more knavish or belligerent Bruce Dickinson, of Iron Maiden renown. Granted, minute soupcons of idiomatic/synchratic vocal perturbing juxtapose more-or-less cavalier attitude to the songs, which, haphazard to say, risk slight degree of verisimilitude i.e. congruence whilst also shrewdly mincing notes, leads-wise, considering how quickly and frugally they resound.In other, less hare-brained words, the band feels very tight, as in, ready-made and ready to roll; yet, it's missing that little spark necessary to make it click within metal minds, far and wide...to high tide. The production is rather dry, behoving the sound (and) fiercely wound dynamics at play; a good thing, considering it parallels the instrumentation's street savvy dryness and rollicking stride. The EP's highlight, potentially, is wolf-bayed, progressively neolithical, almost power-metal-ish in structure and flow (yet decidedly cimmerian and/or stygian) "Moonlight Whispers". Hell, it's no Wolf or In Solitude...but with enough diamond-edged polishing, alongside stratospheric vocal waxes, Steelwitch should locate its niche.
