Bio:

MONRO was formed in Wales during 1985 by guitarist Craig Richards, who returned from London (where he had lived for two years) trying to get into an established band and meeting/playing with great musicians like Joe Elliot, Bernie Tormé, Frank Noon (Def Leppard's first drummer who played on the original Bludgeon-Riffola EP), Colin Bond (bassist for Stampede and Meatloaf), and more.Craig picked local musicians, including bassist Marc “Jonah” Jones, original Traitor’s Gate guitarist Andi Turner, and vocalist Chris Ellis, and the band started writing original material and rehearsing five nights a week. MONRO’s second gig was at the legendary “Marquee Club” in London, supporting Bernie Tormé, where the band was spotted by Spellbound Records/CBS, that signed them. The band's debut album was recorded at “Pluto Studios” in Manchester, famous for recording iconic albums by 10CC, The Clash, and The Smiths.Upon release of the self-titled debut album, MONRO supported LEE Aaron on her 1987 European tour. Two singles were taken off the album, with especially “Some Girls” getting international airplay. After the tour MONRO switched labels from Spellbound/CBS to Global/BMG Ariola and started recording demos for a second album in Munich, with Peter Walsh (famous for engineering and producing albums by Roxy Music, Peter Gabriel, Stevie Wonder and Simple Minds). The songwriting was pretty close to the debut-album, with a polished and somehow “commercial” sound, but unfortunately singer Chris Ellis left to pursue a solo career, so the band enlisted current Nazareth vocalist, Carl Sentence (ex-Persian Risk), to add his vocal prowess to the demos. After this recording, the band decided to keep on searching for a stable singer and so Craig and Andi spent a month in Los Angeles and found vocalist Shane Smith and drummer Jimmy Gilmore, who came to Wales to write and record new material.Unfortunately, the band's record label did not resonate with the new direction the band was taking musically (which was more old-school British Blues Rock, in the vein of Bad Company) and rejected the new demos. The band went separate ways with Mark and Andi joining Shane and Jimmy in Los Angeles whilst Craig moved to Florida.

Album:

As part of the treasurable ‘Lost UK Jewels‘ series, here’s one of the best AOR albums from the ’80s from a band which shoulda been huge: MONRO. Limited to 500 copies their self-titled album is now being reissued / remastered with the addition of 7 awesome previously unreleased studio tracks, all fully remastered. This is great British AOR LP from the 80s with an Americanized sound at places. Their songs are a mix of radio-ready AOR with a serious gilt-edged guitar sound, as evidenced from the get-go with the Fate-like opener ‘Some Girls’.You know this lot breath quality as early on as track two – ‘Here Comes The Night’ is an absolute classic AOR track, and deserves to be listed among the finest of the genre from Britain.Monro was formed in the spring of 1985 by four lads from the valleys and hills of South Wales. The father of the singer had been with The Squires, the group of Tom Jones. Their performance at the legendary Marquee in London, attended a couple of scouts, who were impressed by the show the band had given and their commercial sound. In 1987 band’s debut album came out through the Japanese Alfa Records and later in Europe. These guys were on the prowl the same time as fellow countrymen Kooga, though Monro’s style of melodic rock is much streamlined and glossy than their counterparts. In fact, it’s more North American or Scandinavian sounding than anything coming out of Britain at the time. There are so many soundalikes here – take as example FM, Atlantic, Rio, Export, Dalton – but obviously these guys have listened to many very good artists to come up with an album of this quality.‘Give Me Your Love Again’ is parpy keyboard driven AOR in the mould of Austrian greats Fahrenheit, then ‘It’s You’ is a reasonable attempt at a power ballad yet in a midtempo mode. ‘Lonely People’ is another fantastic effort, while the band emulate Londoners FM by casting a tribute to those ‘American Girls’ in melodic splendor. This is a terrific reissue, coming complete with unheard studio demos featuring a young Carl Sentace (Nazareth) as lead vocalist, songs taped in Munich (1987) and Wales (1988).“Monro” is a damn fine ’80s AOR album that still sounds great more than 35 years later.
