The original line-up was Frank Celenza on drums; Suze DeMarchi on lead vocals and guitar; Dave Leslie on guitar and backing vocals; and Eddie Parise on bass guitar and backing vocals. They recorded two studio albums, Baby Animals (September 1991) – which peaked at No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart, and Shaved and Dangerous (August 1993) – which reached No. 2. At the ARIA Music Awards of 1992 the group won three trophies: Album of the Year and Breakthrough Artist – Album for Baby Animals and Breakthrough Artist – Single for "Early Warning" (April 1991). Baby Animals was listed in 100 Best Australian Albums (October 2010). The reunited line-up are DeMarchi, Leslie, Dario Bortolin on bass guitar and Mick Skelton on drums and percussion. Their fourth studio album, This Is not the End, was issued in May 2013, which reached the top 20.
Album:
Shaved and Dangerous is the second studio album by Australian band the Baby Animals, released in August 1993.After their awesome first album, Baby Animals were pressured by their label to record another hit album, with mixed results. It is a heavier sound than the last album, but definitely not better. The album isn't too bad as a stand alone album, the biggest problem is when you compare it to the incredible previous effort, this just pales in comparison, it isn't consistent and suffers from some stupid lyrics such as "At the end of the day, the sun goes down".As with the previous album, the vocals by Suze are fantastic and the band does an amazing job of backing her up, with again, Dave's great riffing and Frank's powerful drums being the highlights of the instruments. This can be easily seen (or heard actually) in "Backbone", easily Baby Animal's heaviest song, alternating between a head-banging chorus and a bluesy verse. In conclusion, the album is hard to review, with it's main strengths being the instruments and the vocals of the band, and the weaknesses being the inevitable comparison to the incredible first album of the group and the lack on consistency in the album. It's overall a bit more polished, sound-wise from the last album, but loses the raw power and emotion of the original album. It seems a little sterile and sounds like they didn't put their all into the album. You won't be hearing many of the songs from this album on tour!
