Band formed in 1988 like band Piledriver in Canada, Toronto, Ontario.1984-1988 (as Piledriver), 1988-1993 (as Dogs with Jobs), 2004-2019 (as The Exalted Piledriver).Dogs With Jobs was the heavy/thrash metal band formed after the demise of Gord Kirchin's previous band Piledriver in 1988.The Dogs with Jobs debut "Shock" was originally supposed to be the third Piledriver album.Discography: Shock (1990) and Payday (1993).Compilation appearance: "Stone Cold Killer" & "Dogs with Jobs" on A Touch of Fringe (Fringe Product, 1993).

Rare second album was released under the "Dogs With Jobs" moniker, this is essentially the fourth Piledriver album.…in Canada in the early-90’s when Gord Kirchin decided to fold his earlier project Piledriver and found the one under scrutiny here. It’s not very clear what caused the abandonment of the Piledriver stint, considering that the debut of the Dogs was initially scheduled to be released as a third Piledriver instalment… a shocking turn of events that may have shaken, and probably even stirred, the Canadian underdog... sorry, ground back then.Cause Kirchin was by all means one of its most prominent figures regardless of the numerous guises he has acquired throughout the years including the more recent “exalted” extension of the Piledriver saga, The Exalted Piledriver. “Shock” was a fairly cool debut, a faithful sequel to the gorgeous “Stay Ugly”, maybe not as intensely serious, Kirchin emphasizing on the speed metal formula more by trying to sound more optimistic and trippier.The album reviewed here appeared three years later, and an immediate plus should be added to its resume for sticking to the old school canons without a tad of the aggro/groovisms that had taken over the scene at the time. On the minus side we have an audible reduction of the energetic riff-patterns from the first coming the band settling for a steady, but not very eventful mid-tempo power/thrash layout which on “My Darkness” is suitably dark and dramatic recalling Megadeth’s “Countdown to Extinction”, Kirchin’s staple mean semi-clean vocals assuredly leading the parade which also knows its more laid-back rock-ish (“Stone Cold Killer”, the overlong rockarolla “Y I Otta”) side. Vestiges of the guy(s)’ earlier hyper-active exploits (“So Sue Me”) can by all means be detected but “terminal velocity”, like the title of one of the tracks suggests, is hard to come by the blend witnessed not very far from the one cooked on the Piledriver debut, but decidedly more convincing also thanks to the diverse all-instrumental piece “Bad Heart”, another stylish nod to the Megadeth repertoire, and the not very promisingly-titled but enjoyable speed metal roller-coaster “Stinkin' Piece of Shit”.And that was it, the Dogs with Jobs saga was over shortly after this opus’ release as apparently Kirchin’s intention was to hit the scene with two albums from each project… the continuation in the form of The Exalted Piledriver again in the new millennium, at least the only full-length (“Metal Manifesto”, 2008) released so far, looks at the two efforts here coming as a mixture between them, Kirchin surrounding himself with musicians from the now extinct thrashcore outfit Spewgore for this old/new venture. Nothing too thrashy and ugly if we exclude the interesting albeit hardly innovative medieval torture masks and attire that the band members have voted to wear during their live shows… in other words, all possible gimmicks work in Kirchin the Piledriver’s twisted, exalted world… and those can always be tolerated as long as the pets in Toronto don’t stay jobless.
