Bio:
The self-proclaimed Queen Of Rock, Lisa Dominique, is famed for her hard hittin’ rock songs, explosive looks and powerful personality. Although not without her critics, her stage shows were always exciting, performing to packed venues. This was always a big part of her musicianship, and many feel it was only a lack of financial backing that stopped her taking over the states during a fantastic and eventful career.Kicking off her illustrious career in 1985, Lisa Dominique began working with her musically talented brother, Marino (guitar). Making use of his industry contacts, Lisa quickly formed a 5 piece line-up, and began writing and performing around London. Her raunchy image, sensational stage show and ambitious personality made an appealing prospect for numerous UK record labels, but it was her dominating attitude that led her to FM Revolver. Having previously worked with Marino, Paul Birch and FM Revolver were willing to let her continue without a manager, giving her more creative freedom over her music. In 1988, Lisa Dominique released her debut EP, Jealous Heart, to a mixed reception. Many critics claimed that she was all looks and no talent, while others enjoyed her sound and loved her live shows. Fortunately, the band were deemed to show tremendous potential, and secured a contract with FM Revolver for two albums. Her first full length album, Rock ‘n’ Roll Lady, was released in 1989, and took the Rock music scene by storm! Lisa Dominique earned the title of Britain’s No. 1 Female rock vocalist and sex symbol, and praise from music journalism legends, Mick Wall, Bob Seger and Andy Seecher. While reviews were, again, mixed, her PR campaign got her noticed all over the UK as she began to draw comparisons with Debbie Harry, Lita Ford, and Madonna. The PR campaign saw Lisa appear in National papers, worldwide music magazines and everything in between. However, her raunchy appearances fuelled the fire that Lisa Dominique was more about sex appeal than music, and supporters fought a difficult battle to prove the doubters wrong. She continued to divide opinion into the ’90s, but she was about to prove critics wrongs with her upcoming album.Unfortunately, this is when Lisa departed from FM Revolver to join Castle Music records for the remainder of her career. Despite enjoying slightly more success, the label also failed to provide the financial backing she needed to really fulfil her potential. Also, she continued to convey a raunchy attitude, and never fully managed to shake those critics that claimed she was more style than substance.
Album:
Rock 'N' Roll Lady is the debut album from Lisa Dominique, UK's super sexy rock chick in the late 1980's.She broke onto the scene in 1985 as one of the lead singers for Marino The Band. It wasn't until 1989 when she broke out as a solo act and was a staple in Europe's rock culture with she received rave reviews Britain's leading rock magazine, Kerrang! While the 2 singles leading up to this album showcased Dominique at her most diverse, Rock & Roll Lady, as a whole further, expands her range, taking in rock n’ roll along with the blues. This stylistic movement would be suicide in most albums, but this album certainly pulls it off, swinging rather than stumbling to each new style. Lisa Dominique sings with authority on every track, making sure you know that she’s the boss throughout, despite the links with Marino. Her career has moved through music and into writing, but this album serves as a reminder as to how good she was as a singer. For fans of: Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Stevie Nicks, Halestorm.Today many will see Lisa Dominique as a Lita Ford wannabe with her mix of hard rock with an over the top sex strut. In many ways the comparison might be apt, particularly considering Ford's solo debut from the Runaways came a few years before Dominique's 1985 performance debut, but the difference is that Dominique hails from England & is the better singer with a more sultry style. Rock & Roll Lady, her solo debut after leaving Marino The Band, is a good starting point for Dominique's career, let alone career highlight. It has all that would make up her sound, which is, honestly, stereotypical 80's hard rock with all the solos, flairs & melodic dynamics & lots of sexy power ballads, particularly "Somebody Special". After only her first live performance Dominique was labeled by one reviewer in Kerrang! magazine as "rock's new sex kitten that strutted the stage like Scarlet O’Hara on acid." This has both good & bad repercussions. It means that her live show is good but one is a bit hesitant in checking out her audio only studio albums where looks don't mean a thing. Later albums would be a little wilder but Rock & Roll Lady retains its own personality that's more like a sly vixen than a rock star. It actually helps that the Dominique & her band went through numerous experiments in finalizing their sound, including an offer from famed producer Jeff "Mutt" Lange of Def Leppard & help from Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson, with Dominique finally putting her own pen to paper giving the music something only she could. Dominique has been compared to Debbie Harry of Blondie & if Harry did a hard rock album one would expect it to sound like this as vocally they aren't that far apart (for example "Time Bomb" & "Holding On To Your Love"). Rock & Roll Lady topped the British charts & made Dominique England's top female rocker & favorite sex symbol ... beating Stevie Nicks, Annie Lennox & Lita Ford. Sadly, her success would be almost as high but not lasting in the States, though with her follow-up Gypsy Ryder she'd be performing alongside Bon Jovi, Aeromsmith, Ozzy, Lemmy of Motorhead & Ronnie James Dio. Today her name is obscure to many younger rockers, not helped by changing national music styles, a small relatively small output & forays in non-musical directions including a wine company & novel writing.
