Initiated by lead guitarists Erik Gaßmus and Phillipp Olivier, the German Progressive Death Metal band WORDS OF FAREWELL formed in early 2007.After four months of rehearsing, the 7 track EP 'Ashes of the Coming Dawn' was recorded at Boombox Studios in Lünen and published in a quantity of 500 units.In the autumn of 2008 the band recorded the 4 track CD 'From Now On...' for promotional purposes at Total Recall Studios in Herten. It was pressed in limited numbers to be sent out to record labels and venues, distributed at live concerts and additionally offered as free download.Furthermore, the second sampler of the 'European Underground Extreme Metal Front" featured their track "In Fiction'.In the summer of 2009, Jonas Wübbe entered as the new drummer of the band.Subsequently, the live sound was further improved in reducing the instrumentation from three to two guitars - former bassist and singer Alexander Otto gave way in bass playing to former rhythm guitarist Nils Urginus, and concentrated on only doing vocals from then on.From June to December 2010, the band entered Metallurgy Studios, Mönchengladbach, where the debut album 'Immersion' was produced.Taken from this production, the song 'Sorae' was uploaded to various internet platforms where fans and musicians sang from the treetops.In 2011 Phillipp Olivier left the band, Henrik Tschierschky, long-term friend and former guitarist for the bands Harasai and Symbiontic, followed as competent successor.Since early 2012 Words of Farewell cooperate with the German record label AFM Records from Hamburg. The first official act was the distribution of “Immersion” Europe-wide on March 30th and in the United States of America on May 8th, 2012.Countless reviews from both national and international critiques awarded the album very high marks, in some cases the highest possible.Shows on festivals as well as concerts with legends of the genre like Scar Symmetry and Dark Tranquillity followed.In early 2013, Jonas Wübbe left the band on friendly footing and Tristan Wegner entered as the new drummer.

With Words Of Farewell we can say goodbye to limp and lifeless melodic death metal as The Black Wild Yonder is an incredibly robust record.This is the follow up to their impressive 2012 début Immersion, which demonstrated the integral strengths that you would expect of more seasoned acts within the genre. With such potential in tow, they've managed to deliver a clear refinement in this sophomore effort with its staggering strength of composition. Though the début was effectively tied together, these Germans have moved forward with their album construction, with this new record showing finer placement and tapping of the band's strengths. It's possible for the listener to hear the more orderly and structured approach to song writing, which in and of itself is melodically resounding with a whole lot of punch and aggressivity. The atmospheric components, whether of the graceful piano or synth layering variety, are smartly placed not only as transitional segments between each of the album's parts, but within the context of each track they are buried supportively beneath the forceful melodic assault of the guitars so as to give the riffs their sheen. Production polishing enhances this to powerful results and is surely one of this album's greatest assets.The use of fading is nicely done, such as in the intro of "Beauty In Passing," which maximises the punch as the guitars ascend explosively to the fore. This effect goes a long way toward breaking any monotony as well as providing a more effectively streamlined listen, more than I could say was the case with their début, which may have been more of a diverse listen, but not as neatly, clearly and cogently expressed as what we have here.Unity is key. While each track bears a close resemblance to the next they can be heard as variations on the same experience or original pieces on the same tightly composed core sound; a sound which possesses melodic strength, atmospheric engagement and a high level of consistency, all three of these being essentials to any great melodic death metal record. The guitar work is creatively impressive and bolstered with precisional drumming, the growls are loaded with menace and lyrical meaning, and the rhythm section as a whole moves on with such tangible direction and force that any concerns over song distinction seem like wasted thoughts. Dynamism is best represented not in terms of a widely ranging sound, but in the clear vitality of the very ordered, very well presented and purposeful musicianship. This record has clearly been very carefully written with attention given to and control over keyboard use and atmospheric effects, which are precisely placed so as to aid ease of flow and distinguish each of the tracks, rather than act as an encumbrance.The style also moves beyond the shadows of Omnium Gatherum and Dark Tranquillity for something more individually vigorous. Although The Black Wild Yonder doesn't distance the band from their contemporaries to any notable extent, neither is it directly comparable. In other words moves are made stylistically speaking to create something more of their own, with a stamp of their design to it. And man do they "stamp" it; that would be putting it in the mildest of terms.Words Of Farewell have a clear notion of where they're taking their sound, not vying for something overly showy, colourful or flamboyant but something driven by an obvious inner strength and sense of purpose. The Black Wild Yonder is structurally sound melodic death metal.

Album:

Words of Farewell was recommended to me due to perceived similarities to Omnium Gatherum and other Finnish genre hallmarks. I definitely see some parallels here, as these Germans feel just as opulently melodic and their riffing style has a bit more of a modern vibe to it, with the proclivity for chunkier, almost groovy rhythms. This band certainly won't trigger a paradigm shift or anything in the genre, but there aren't many German band working with this more modern, synth-laced framework, so its nice to see the region get some solid representation with Words of Farewell. Now, this is the band's third record and their experience has presumably been put to good use, as A Quiet World has most of what I want in a modern melodic death act, and excels in the important aspects.Getting right to the nitty-gritty, "My Share of Loneliness" is soaked in tangible, palpable heaviness and evokes a convincing dichotomy when the elegant synths bite off their share of sonic real estate. The keys are indeed very similar to Omnium Gatherum, or even some Russian acts like Sympuls-e and Sunless Rise, like the trance lines that thread in-between the sinewy gait of the riffs on "Gaia Demise." The lead guitars are also more than capable of holding their own, resulting in a strong assault from a melodic aspect, even if the rhythm riffs feel a modicum rote at times, lacking in verisimilitude and failing to appreciably inveigle the listener. Some cuts like "Gallows Frame" crank out some nifty, obtuse rhythms in a manner redolent of later Scar Symmetry. Words of Farewell share that same Martian vibe, especially with the futuristic sounding synths and super-focused leads.Raw technicality isn't the band's strongest suit, but the guitarists are up to the challenge of maintaining equilibrium and enthralls me thoroughly with the raw emotion that bleeds through the lead melodies. Soloing also leans more on impressing through measured restraint as opposed to shredding. This results in even more memorable instances within A Quiet World, which is shaping up to be one of the best melodeath exports of the year. I certainly can't accuse the band of monotony either, as there is a wide breadth of tone and atmosphere throughout the record, like the multifaceted "Limit Cycle," which makes good use of its seven-plus minute runtime and runs through a bevy of interesting progressions, evoking further parallels to Scar Symmetry.The unexciting rhythm guitars aside, A Quiet World is a seriously impressive modern melodeath outing. Words of Farewell feels like a band that would excel with a competent clean vocalist trading off with the screams, and the absence of such here (save for a few instances) makes me wonder how much better these guys could actually be. In fact. that would almost be a melodic overload, so it is probably for the best in the end. The voluminous, rousing swells of the synths pins down the introspective, cerebral atmosphere of the record in a way wholly familiar yet no less awesome. Definitely a shoe-in contender for album of the year regarding the subgenre.
