Bio:

In the early days of the band, and apparently to show how much he despises Christianity, Glen Benton branded an inverted cross into his forehead using nothing but a flaming coat hanger. After seven times embedding a red hot inverted cross into his skin, it has scarred into its shape. On November 25th, 2004 Glen Benton officially stated that the Hoffman brothers would no longer be in the band due to them cancelling and walking off many shows, among other personal issues. The main reason the brothers left was actually a change in the percentages of royalties between the band. Previously, there had been an even four-way split. Under the new agreement the Hoffmans were entitled to a far smaller share of the profits (with as much as 50% going to Benton). The Hoffmans have since started a new band, using Deicide's original name Amon.Jack Owen, recently out of Cannibal Corpse and Dave Suzuki, who had worked with Benton in Vital Remains came in to help Deicide on tour. Owen stayed on but Suzuki's place was taken by Ralph Santolla for the recording of "The Stench of Redemption." Glen Benton missed the entire European tour for this album, because he had to attend a court case to do with trimonial/custody matters; the tour carried on anyway with help from some eleventh hour replacements. Seth Van De Loo (who was playing drums for the support band, Severe Torture) performed vocals on the first four dates of the tour due to the last-minute nature of Benton's decision not to travel. They played these gigs with no bass player. Garbathy "Yaha" of Dissenter was then brought in as replacement bassist/vocalist for the remaining dates. Jack Owen also performed lead vocals on some songs at these shows. This obviously controversial tour followed on from two European tours which were cancelled at the last minute in the 1990s.Ralph Santolla officially left Deicide in 2007 but performed on "Till Death Do Us Part" as a session musician. Steve Asheim also contributed to the guitar playing on this album for the first time. Kevin Quirion, who plays with Steve Asheim in Council of the Fallen/Order of Ennead, joined Deicide in 2008 as a touring replacement for Santolla. Santolla briefly returned in 2009 but soon left again and Quirion joined as a permanent member in July that year.In 1992, while Gorefest were opening for Deicide in Stockholm, a bomb exploded outside the emergency door behind their stage (which was on the fifth floor of the building), causing extensive structural damage to the door and the wall. Some people thought that Gorefest, a politically correct band, was attacked by people involved in the black metal scene, but in reality the bomb was planted by the Animal Militia, a UK-based pro-animals group, aimed at Deicide playing later that evening. Glen Benton had received earlier death-threats over his stance on mutilating small animals, and afterward received another letter saying that "Stockholm was just a taste of what is to come".Glen Benton has also done backing vocals on the song "Hung, Drawn and Quartered" by Cancer on the album "Death Shall Rise", for Napalm Death on the song "Unfit Earth" on their breakthrough album, "Harmony Corruption" and for Cannibal Corpse on the songs "Mangled" and "A Skull Full of Maggots" from the album "Eaten Back to Life" and on the song "Vomit the Soul" from the album "Butchered at Birth".In 2007, Steve Asheim was arrested and held for police questioning in Austria after presenting money to a bank teller that was covered in red ink. The police believed him to be involved in a recent bank robbery, so he was taken in. After hours of questioning, it was discovered that a red pen had leaked in his pocket, staining the money. Asheim was released without further questioning.By November 2007 Deicide began work on its ninth studio album at Florida's Morrisound Studios. Entitled Till Death Do Us Part, the follow-up to 2006's The Stench of Redemption promised to be Deicide's "most savage and aggressive [offering] to date," according to a press release. Drummer Steve Asheim recorded drum tracks and Benton started recording vocals in December. By April 2008 two songs off this album were posted online. It was finally released on April 28, 2008. As the record was coming out, Benton considered retiring from music, in the midst of personal matters including a custody battle. On January 6, 2009, Deicide posted a blog on their official Myspace page saying they had signed a worldwide record deal with Century Media, with Ralph Santolla returning to the band for a European tour. They were said to be working on material for a summer 2010 release. In early 2009 they toured with Vital Remains and Order of Ennead. Guitarist Kevin Quirion of Order of Ennead joined the band in the summer of 2009.In June 2010, Glen Benton revealed that the next Deicide album was to be titled To Hell with God.[19] It was produced by Mark Lewis at Audiohammer Studios in Sanford, Florida and was finally released on February 15, 2011.Deicide released their eleventh studio album, In the Minds of Evil, on November 26, 2013.

Album:

After being blown away by their first two albums, I found myself checking out after the bands third release Once Upon the Cross. It seemed that while the production quality had stepped up the sheer ferocity of the music had stepped down. Fast forward twenty years. Hate Eternal and Entombed A.D. are coming to town on a tour headlined by none other than Deicide. Being a big H.E. and Entombed fan I will be attending the show so I decided to check out the latest Deicide album to see if it would be worth hanging out to watch the headliners. I found the latest album was twenty thirteen’s In the Minds of Evil. After listening to several of the samples on line I immediately hit the download button. As always the foundation of the music is laid down by Asheim and Benton. The drums guide the album at a nice steady pace that allows the guitars to lay down some heavy ass riffs. Asheim adds in plenty of fills and nice cymbal work (see Misery of One) to accent the music. Benton’s bass follows Asheim just fine, nothing exceptional to report on this although it is nice to have it audible in the mix.Benton seems to have developed a much deeper vocals in comparison to his work on the first two albums. Gone are the dual high low vocals I enjoyed so much in songs like Dead But Dreaming and Sacrificial Suicide. While I miss the higher pitched vocals I do enjoy the new deeper low so much better than the original. It makes the album that much darker and contributes nicely to the overall heaviness of the the album. The guitar duties are handled by Jack Owen and Kevin Quirion. I’ve never heard these gentlemen before and I couldn’t tell you who was playing what part. What I can tell you is that they do an outstanding job here. The riffs are heavy and memorable as hell (see entire album). The soloing is done in fine taste adding the right accents in the right places without disintegrating into high pitched oblivion. The standout moment for this is on Between the Flesh and the Void but is true for the entire album.Overall this album is exceptional. I’ve found nine of the eleven tracks to be truly memorable and the other two enjoyable. I’ve listened to the album in its entirety over two dozen times in the two weeks since I purchased it. Needless to say I will be staying to watch the headliners.

Album:

One of Florida’s most violent and vicious acts, Deicide blasted through the 90’s with envious power and brutal mortality, but lost quite a bit of steam in the early 2000’s and had been juggling between good and mediocre albums – with the exception of ‘The Stench of Redemption’ (2006) – since then, but it seems like that crazy, scary-looking dude with an inverted cross scarred in the forehead has once again found the way to the gates of hell with ‘Overtures of Blasphemy’.With newcomer Mark English (Monstrosity) replacing Jack Owen as one of the axemen alongside Kevin Quirion, Glen Benton hit the jackpot in terms of heaviness and sheer savagery, but now the riffs also sound more organic, crisp and mature when in comparison to the band’s last entry, ‘In the Minds of Evil’ (2013).Brutal assaults like the ludicrous opener “One with Satan” and the last portion of the album featuring cataclysmic moments like “Consumed by Hatred” are more than enough to prove that Benton and his devilish friends are back in full force to desecrate tombs, assassinate God’s envoys and kick major ass with delicious riffs.A somewhat unexpected heterogeneous nature is also present here in the form of more melodic (well, as little melodic as Deicide can be) efforts like “Crawled from the Shadows”, when the band experiments with more prolific and less toned-down guitar work, and some passages in the awesome “Compliments of Christ” – this one showcases Benton’s blasphemous mind at its best with especially exaggerated anti-Christian lyrics and one of the most terrifying vocal lines by the frontman in a long time.Don’t worry, though, as there’s plenty straight-forward old-school death metal to go around in the mid portion of the record, with assaults such as the faster than lightning “All That Is Evil”, “Excommunicated” – which has one of the coolest intros of the album with a killer solo – and the similarly guitar-friendly “Anointed in Blood”, this one being more cadenced.deicide 2018 1024x768 - REVIEW: DEICIDE - "Overtures of Blasphemy".Tracks “Seal the Tomb Below” and “Crucified Soul of Salvation” further consolidate the heretic aura. The first one is a juggernaut of no frills death metal that leaves no room to breathe, while the second sees Benton in a full-on rampage of vituperation. In the same vein as the latter is “Defying the Sacred”, where the aggressiveness – both instrumental and lyric-wise – is taken to yet another level.“Flesh, Power, Dominion” and closer “Destined to Blasphemy” illustrate clockwork instrumental and visceral angriness easily matching those of Deicide heydays. The latter one, for that matter, is one of their best songs in a long time, by being especially ruthless, electric and evil.As it always is with Deicide, the kitchen work is absurdly heavy, with Benton leading the charge by relentlessly slapping his bass and Steve Asheim providing support with his state of the art battering ram, making each song sound powerful and relevant. The cover art provided by Zbigniew Bielak (Behemoth, Deströyer 666, Dimmu Borgir) is marvelous and the production and mixing value are stellar, provided by veterans Jason Suecof (Death Angel, Charred Walls of the Damned, The Black Dahlia Murder, etc.) and Alan Douches (Death, Attacker and many others), respectively, and there’s a decent spacing between highs and lows, making the experience even better.Forget about recent slips like ‘Till Death Do Us Part’ (2008) and ‘To Hell with God’ (2011), because ‘Overtures of Blasphemy’ is the best Deicide album since ‘The Stench of Redemption’ (2006); ironically enough, this time around redemption doesn’t stink, but rather has the sweet, sweet fragrance of victory. One of the best death metal albums of 2018 so far.
