Album:

The band recorded its new album, “Hail the Apocalypse” live in the studio with producer Tobias Lindell in Thailand, which Eckerström said made a huge difference on the record. The mixing was done by Jay Ruston, and Johannes said he made the band sound better than ever before. The debut single will be the title cut, which releases March 17 and will be accompanied by a new video. According to Eckerström, new guitarist Tim Öhrström is primarily responsible for the title track, and he calls the song’s main riff something unlike anything he’s heard before.

Album:

Swedish metallers AVATAR will release a brand new concept album titled "Feathers & Flesh" on Friday, May 13 via Another Century in Europe and Entertainment One (eOne) in North America and Canada. The new release will be the band's highly anticipated follow-up to 2014's "Hail The Apocalypse". The aim is set higher, further and deeper than ever before for AVATAR. Not only is this concept album their most extensive work to date, showing the widest range of any of their albums, it also contains a story too extensive for any booklet, so they made a book — a fully illustrated 60-page, 109-verse poem hardcover book. The physical album pre order, book, and exclusive merchandise will be available directly from the band starting on March 17 at AvatarMetal.com.AVATAR's music video for the new song "For The Swarm" can be seen below. Directed by longtime collaborator Johan Carlén, the clip pegs itself firmly into the upper echelon of stunning visual masterpieces the band has grown accustomed to producing. "For The Swarm" is also available as an iTunes instant gratification track, meaning fans who pre order the album today will get the track as an instant download."Feathers & Flesh" was recorded in Germany, Finland and Sweden in December 2015 with producer extraordinaire Sylvia Massy (SYSTEM OF A DOWN, TOOL, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS)."AVATAR is an amazing band," said Massy, adding, "The singer has the wild energy and charisma I love, and the players are relentless. The album we're making is an epic. Each song powerfully stands on its own, but is only a piece of a larger story. This album is the project I've been dreaming about for years!"The music is as always, rooted in the extreme, with plenty of melodic sensibility and a lust for experimentation. There is a love for intense double bass drumming, riffing and shredding of timeless dimensions alongside rough edges, slow grooves and epic storytelling for the ages. The idea is that as the band digs deeper, the fists will be held up higher. The end result is a modern metal album with all the ruthlessness and power one could ask for handled with a loving songwriter’s hand, inspired by THE BEATLES and QUEEN.

Album:

AVATAR is a band that has been around for a decent amount of time. As the years go by, their sound, and imagine, become increasingly more bombastic. There are countless arguments on both sides of the fence about if image should be important at all in music, especially for Metal. I’m not going to debate that here, and AVATAR whole “King and Country,” theme is a bit annoying and corny, but fortunately AVATAR have always let their music speak for itself and first. With this, their seventh full length album, “Avatar Country,” that hasn’t change. In fact, the band has only improved and I daresay this might be the catchiest Metal album of the year. That scary word “catchy” often times makes Metalheads shudder but AVATAR can pull it off because they are damn good song writers and great musicians. Most of all, this album continues to uphold one, undeniable fact about the band: despite how you feel about them, AVATAR have a very unique sound that is all their own. After the intro, “Glory to Our King,” which sounds like it could had come from a play or maybe even a medieval cabaret, this album kicks into high gear with “Legend of the King.” This song opens with frantic and melodic guitar work from Kungen and Ohrstrom. These guys play so tightly and with such kingly vigor, you’ll forget all about how insane this album is. Not since BLIND GUARDIAN, has there been guitar players that make you want to sing along to their riffs and solos. This song clocks in at over 8 minutes and it’s a fun ride all the way thru. The band incorporates an odd blend of both Power and Melodic Death metal but also throws in some classic rock and (shock!) pop music. All these sounds are put together in such a well blended mixture that you won’t do anything but rock your ass off for the entire album’s run. “Legend of the King,” sums up what the band wants to accomplish with this release nicely.“King’s Harvest,” displays another side of the band, one that shows they can still bring some crushing heaviness down on us. The riffs are MESSHUGAH style in their density and dissonance and the vocals are more closely related to Death Metal than Power this time around. Eckerstorm can pretty much do anything with this voice, equally at home singing as he is screaming or growling. “A Statue of the King,” fits everything and the kitchen sink into its 3:44 time limit. It’s an energetic and myriad display of the bands talent, running the gauntlet to a “circus” style theme to the music all the way to thrash. Much like “Legend of the King,” this song showcases the band’s ability to mix it up on the fly, albeit in a much shorter fashion. The last two songs, “Silent Songs of the King pts. 1 and 2,” are instrumentals that end the album well. The first part is melodic with mostly clean instrumentation and the second part is a metal instrumental that focuses more on tight playing than being overly bombastic. All in all, AVATAR continue to impress with their crazy Heavy Metal sound that incorporates such varied and insane ideas. An early contender for one of the best albums of the year. If you're a fan of the band, I don’t see any reason why you wouldn’t enjoy this. If you haven’t heard of them before, and want something refreshing yet still very much Heavy Fucking Metal, then put this on your “must have” list.

Album:

Cheerfully standing apart from the crowd and confusing the hell out of almost as many people as they delight, AVATAR are a unique proposition. They're also a fantastic heavy metal band: a fact that is often missed, largely due to the Swedes' cartoonish image and their propensity for occasionally sounding like a power metal SYSTEM OF A DOWN. Frontman Johannes Eckerström has a giant twinkle in his eyes at all times, but there's nothing frivolous or lightweight about the music on "Hunter Gatherer". As with 2018's "Avatar Country", which saw them explore more traditional metal territory while still sounding wonderfully unhinged, AVATAR's eighth album exudes the kind of confidence you get when you know you're in a class of one. Yes, there are occasional nods to alternative rock, nu-metal and grunge here, but the core of songs like furious opener "Silence in the Age of Apes" and the anthemic "Scream Until You Wake" is bold, belligerent and bombastic singalong metal, informed by modern notions of brutality but primarily focused on delivering unforgettable melodic money shots. The strongest moments come when AVATAR stretch out a little: "A Secret Door" is a feast of skewed melodrama, with Eckerström crooning the verses and bellowing the choruses like Satan's jester. A final flurry of bait 'n' switch dynamics is simply superb, recalling FAITH NO MORE at their subversive best, but with enough underlying pomp to please any POWERWOLF fan. Similarly, "Child" is a fidgety, cinematic mini-symphony which somehow manages to sound like IRON MAIDEN and DOG FASHION DISCO simultaneously. Closer "Wormhole" is even better: a pummeling, double-kick deluge with gruesome, deathly doom riffs to match, it's easily the heaviest thing AVATAR have ever done, and yet it sparkles with multiple inspired melodic tricks and an almost QUEEN-like sense of grandeur. If "Hunter Gatherer" lacks anything, it's an iron-plated crowd-pleaser like perennial live favorites "Hail the Apocalypse" and "Smells Like a Freakshow". But AVATAR have now evolved to a point where doing the obvious is not even a possibility, let alone a plan: there's a joy in the flagrant heaviness and post-thrash aesthetic of songs like "God of Sick Dreams" and "Gun" that makes the curious detours and wonky hooks sound entirely logical. And yes, Eckerström's personality still leaps from the speakers and slaps you around the head. There are few contemporary frontmen with a better grasp of how to sell a song, however thematically ludicrous it might be. Striking a balance between goofy showmanship and balls-out metal isn't something that anyone can pull off, but AVATAR have mastered it and are really blossoming here. Don't hate them for being more fun than your favorite band.

Album:

Dance Devil Dance was recorded in the Swedish wilderness, far away from all the perceived glamour of the big city and modern studios. Jay Ruston (Anthrax, Mr. Bungle, Crobot, Stone Sour, Amon Amarth, Uriah Heep etc.) returned as producer. He first worked with us when he mixed Hail the Apocalypse, a role he reprised on Feathers & Flesh before taking the wheel as producer on Avatar Country and Hunter Gatherer. No extra personnel were wanted nor needed. We stayed together for a month, eating, sleeping and breathing Dance Devil Dance, just the six of us.Swedish Heavy Metal masters Avatar have been going from strength to strength over the duration of their illustrious career it seems, breaking new ground and reaching new milestones with each passing year. After 2020 saw the release of their final album with Century Media in “Hunter Gatherer” the band went independent creating Black Waltz Records, releasing a trail of breadcrumbs in the form of no less than five stand alone singles to bring us to their latest burnt offering “Dance Devil Dance“. They enjoyed a headlining tour of North America last summer followed by a stadium tour of Brazil in support of Iron Maiden, an arena run with Sabaton and some major festivals including Summer Breeze and Bloodstock the band once again recorded in the Swedish wilderness. Far away from all the perceived glamour of the big city and modern studios, the band were joined by long time collaborator and producer Jay Ruston (Anthrax, Stone Sour, Amon Amarth) for a month to do the Devils work…Blending Heavy Metal with Hard Rock influences this journey down the yellow brick road to Hell begins with the title track and then “Chimp Mosh Pit“, a prize pair of punchy numbers that have a little bit of Queen or The Darkness flare to it as Eckerström reaches into his magic hat and pulls forth an improved vocal range, especially in the clean department. That helps drive an even more eclectic and eccentric sound as the band are able to bounce around between a broader range of sounds as the extremes push out that much further. There is no doubt that the pair of cuts give the band a broader appeal and on first listen they offer intrigue to older fans as well. Avatar keep us on our toes with “Valley Of Disease“, dialling back some of the higher pitched warbling’s of that opening pair in favour of a crushing marching styled cut with a couple of Industrial moments and a brutal Death Metal roar thrown in for good measure. If that wasn’t enough, the sheer groove of “On The Beach” serves to confirm that the band still have a bitter black heart of pure Heavy Metal even if they float off into a world of their own by the end. The journey is magical and if you pardon the pun, very much what the edge of the seat was made for with more twists and turns than a well written thriller. What sound like slide guitars give “Do You Feel In Control” a space age feel while the rhythmic battery ensures the band have a mosh pit starter on their hands as we reach the middle of the album in style even if lyrically it is not as unhinged as perhaps the cover art depicts.Going full circle in style back to what the opening pair of cuts offered “Gotta Wanna Riot” takes that arena filling Hard Rock sound and beefs it up while Eckerström gives us moments of catchy vocal that feel like they’re straight out of the 70’s playbook, a clear departure from the Melodic Death Metal roots of the band. Perhaps built on the foundation of moments that were heard in cuts like “Scream Until You Wake” from “Hunter Gatherer“, this takes those ideas and makes them a new bedrock. “The Dirt I’m Buried In” continues the narrative with dare we say it, a more commercial sound. Less of the dark devilry of the bands previous works and instead a sing-a-long style that will please the masses at the festivals, it lacks the punch or emotive quality in the introspective lyric to really convey the sentiment. But all hope is not lost and “Clouds Dipped In Chrome” brings back the heavier riffs and darker vocals to give us something with less experimentation and more of a satisfying crunch. The solo is a classic face melter and the lyrics are out there bizarre making this one nothing short of a classic Avatar cut. “Hazmat Suit” feels like the concept of the dance, scumbag! moment in 1987’s Blind Date as Bruce Willis fires a revolver at the ground taken to a whole new level before the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds inspired introduction to “Train” gets wrecked in the mid section by some Heavy Metal violence. Fortunately Avatar save one of the albums finer cuts until last with “Violence No Matter What” which sees Eckerström go toe to toe with Lzzy Hale of Halestorm fame. The pair avoid the obvious love sick ballad and instead allow their vocals to intertwine, layering up in the chorus with Hale demonstrating that she’s got an unclean vocal range that no one gives her credit for. All in all a real mixed bag of an album that feels more experimental than usual and has something of a soft centre…
