Bio:

Suidakra (stylized "SuidAkrA") is a melodic death metal band from Germany.During their fourteen-year career, they have performed over 200 live shows for several European and Russian tours,as well as a North American tour. They are known for their use of traditional instruments to augment their sound, such as the bagpipe, banjo, and tin whistle.Suidakra was formed in 1994 by guitarist Arkadius Antonik and drummer Stefan Möller under the name Gloryfication. The band recorded two demos with varying lineups, until finally solidifying its line-up with keyboardist Daniela Voigt, guitarist Marcel Schoenen and bassist Christoph Zacharowski. Later in the same year the band's name was changed to Suidakra (Arkadius spelled backwards). In 1997, the band released their first album, the self-published Lupine Essence. The album attracted the attention of German record company Last Episode. A deal was signed, and the band proceeded to record their second album Auld Lang Syne in 1998. Soon after the release bassist Nils Bross replaced Christoph Zacharowski.Lays from Afar and The Arcanum were released in 1999 and 2000, respectively. At this point, the sound of the band had developed into melodic death metal reminiscent of many Gothenburg area bands. Further lineup changes took place after the release of The Arcanum, as Daniela Voigt and Stefan Möller left the band and Marcel Schoenen retired his band position to concentrate on song writing. In 2001, SuidAkrA signed a deal with Century Media Records. Drummer Lars Wehner and guitarist Germano Sanna joined Antonik and Bross to record the follow-up to The Arcanum, titled Emprise to Avalon, released in 2002. This lineup didn't last long, as Bross left the band soon after recordings were complete. Marcus Riewaldt joined the band to take up the bass spot. A year later Marcel Schoenen returned to replace Sanna. The new lineup meant a change in the creative responsibilities. For the band's sixth studio album, Signs for the Fallen, all members took part in writing material. While the lineup remained the same for the next album, the band had run into disagreement with their label and eventually split. They went on to finance the next album on their own, and later signed a new recording deal with Armageddon Music. Command to Charge was released in 2005.Their eighth studio release, titled Caledonia was released on 2006-11-17.The Scottish themed album included some fairly prominent use of highland bagpipes, contributed by Axel Römer, who also appeared on some of the larger live performances. From 5–12 August 2007 some old tracks were re-recorded for a Best Of compilation titled 13 Years of Celtic Wartunes.Others tracks were remastered. This was released on 25 April 2008.together with a live DVD containing registrations of the Wacken 2007 performance as well as the acoustic show at the Kielowatt Festival in 2006. Release dates for other regions were 2008-04-28 (Europe) and 2008-06-10 (USA).Shortly after their performance on Ultima Ratio 3 in November 2007 the band announced that Marcel Schoenen had left the band for the second time, to concentrate on his job. Consequently a new live guitar player was recruited in the form of Tim Siebrecht, ex-member of the disbanded formation Sleeping Gods. The band returned to Gernhart recording studios in November 2008 to record their ninth studio album Crógacht. The album featured greater Celtic influences, taking its name from the Gaelic word for bravery. It was released on 20 February 2009 in Germany, 23 February in the rest of Europe, and 3 March in the USA. Suidakra supported this album with a US and European tour throughout 2009.In May 2009, Suidakra announced a Chinese tour, as well as informing fans that tour guitarist and backup vocalist, Sebastian Hintz, was promoted to full member. On 6 October 2010, the band announced that, after a short tour and some festival appearances, they would enter the studio to begin recording their tenth studio album, Book of Dowth.Early the next year, the band signed with AFM Records and Book of Dowth was released through that label on 25 March 2011. Immediately after release of the album, the band embarked on a European tour.In February 2012, Suidakra played in India for the first time, appearing at VIT University in Vellore as well as performing in Bangalore at Summer Storm Festival (supporting Opeth). A tour of the United States followed, with Tim Siebrecht standing in for Marcus Riewaldt on bass. Siebricht would become the permanent bassist for the band. Suidakra returned to India in June to perform at Bangalore Open Air as a fill-in act for Iced Earth. The title of the band's eleventh album, Eternal Defiance, was announced in December 2012, with recordings finished by February 2013. Eternal Defiance was released on 24 May 2013 by AFM Records. In September of that year, Suidakra appeared on the Heidenfest Tour with fellow folk metal bands Equilibrium, Ensiferum, and Turisas.Songwriting for Suidakra's twelfth studio album, Realms of Odoric, began in January 2015. Realms of Odoric will be a collaboration with Kris Verwimp, who is doing lyrics for the album. Verwimp had previously done cover artwork for several of the band's albums.

Album:

Originally labeled as celtic metal, but what the hell does that tell you? I would call this folk metal every day of the week. Suidakra released their debut in 1997, still Eternal Defiance is the first one I'm really listening to with full attention. I remember that I watched a set at Wacken Open Air once and thought it was pretty good, actually. I however soon forgot all about them, but when the opportunity opened for an album review, I saw a chance to check them out properly. This album has most elements of folk metal including a few croaking birds and a medieval touch with occasional horns, flutes, and liras, computerized naturally. Almost all throughout it's at the edge of melodic death metal or is just heavy and crushing, backed by distinct heavy riffs and thunderous drum play with a powerful production on top. The harmony guitar has striking melodies and its importance in this release can't be ignored as its significance creates a push forward with an apt flow. Not groundbreaking, though cool. With Arkadius' raw voice and with female vocalist Tina Stabel we get some variety in the songs in an ordinarily confined space of metal. Tina gets a fairly large room with appearances in many of the songs and furthermore sings the ballad The Mindsong all by herself.Inner Sanctum and Dragon's Head are killer and we also get a cool version of the Irish traditional folk song Mrs. McGrath as bonus track. Most songs have a vigorous drive full of energy, although I can't say that every minute of this release crushes. Yet it is a strong album and I know that I must now check out their past work as well. Eternal Defiance happens to be their twelfth album, so I now have some solid homework to look forward to.

Album:

German metal band Suidakra, with eleven studio albums and a wealth of experience under their belt, are ready to unleash their new album ‘Realms of Odoric’ on May 20, 2016. In the vein of Kris Vervimp’s and Suidakra frontman Arkadius Antonik’s collaboration under the same name ‘Realms of Odoric’, this soundtrack-inspired project contains thirteen tracks that show the band in full musical splendour.Despite the band opting for a fairly-straightforward metal approach towards song-writing in terms of guitars and drums, the folk elements add a tinge of diversity and uniqueness to the songs. The albums opener “Into the Realm” and the first full-length track “The Serpent Within” show what to expect from the rest of the album –a mix of atmospheric elements, with generous portions of bagpipe, and melodic death metal with frequent lead guitar-work.Arkadius is prominent as ever in the mix, delivering harsh vocals which fall into place perfectly between his rhythm guitar-playing and the leads. The dual guitar attack by him and Marius “Jussi” Pesch is complemented by Lars Wehner’s drumming, which isn’t overly technical but is intense and furious at the same time. “The Hunter’s Horde” is an example of this interplay, where Lars’ double bass runs blend with the guitar leads and vocals, allowing the song to deviate into anthem-like sections later on for maximum effect.“Braving the End” and “Creeping Blood” sound like fillers, but they give the listener a breather after a barrage of metal, and these short tracks are decent listens. However, the rest of the tracks remain faithful to the melodic death approach and are enjoyable in themselves, but not so much in the context of the whole album, as some may feel monotony kicking in. All of a sudden, Suidakra pulls out all the stops and delivers an absolute gem in the track “On Roads to Ruin”, featuring memorable and catchy passages. The bagpipes are back in tracks like “One Against the Tide”, and working along with some symphonic elements, take this song to the next level by introducing a bass fill by Tim Siebrecht, who isn’t as prominent up to this point, save for his clean singing in “The Serpent Within” and other songs. As the album draws to a close, “Cimbric Requiem” delivers a mesmerising finale with its epic-sounding symphonies, and the band proves you don’t need a hard-hitting death metal track to conclude an album in a memorable way. With the epic finale “Cimbric Requiem”, Suidakra ends what has been a diverse, well thought-out album, as most tracks make sure to draw the listener in with haunting melodies and interesting folk elements. Overall, ‘Realms of Odoric’ is an album showing an experienced band arguably in its creative prime. Being inspired by soundtrack-like music is perhaps what made the songs on this album sound large, definitive, and unrelenting in their intensity, and one can only wait to see what Suidakra conjures up next.

Album:

After meanwhile over 26 years of band history, 15 full lenghts releases including worldwide tours in Europe, North America, South America, China and India I certainly can say that SuidAkrA counts to one of the flagships of the German Metal Scene in General. The band understands their own style as Celtic Metal which is basically a mix of Melodic Death Metal and Folk Metal. While the lyrical conception was always clear in mainly dealing with the Celtic Mythology, SuidAkrA was constantly developing and re-inventing their musical attempts during their bands history. Since November 2019 SuidAkrA is signed with MDD Records and will release on the 25.06.2021 their new record “Wolfbite”. The sound of of chains, whips and screams are opening the first song “A life in chains”, which will most properly already break the one or others headbanger neck. Hard guitars riffs combined with the use of blastbeats and the harsh growls of Mastermind Arkadius together with clean vocals of Sebastian prepare the further way of this new album. The howl of a Wolf opens the second track “The Inner Wolf” which is not losing any of the intensity and increases once more the aggression of the record. Different genres as Melodic Death, pure Death to nearly Black Metal elements merge in this title, which perfectly reflect to the lyrics and topic of the “The Inner Wolf”. With the next song “Darcanian Slave” they lower down the tempo just a little bit and bring back in more melody. The first time on the album you can also recognize some folky elements in the background while the two vocalists give each other a battle of clean and growling vocals. “Faoladh” starts with an very nice celtic instrumental prelude, just to explode in another harsh track driven by fantastic guitar riffs. With “Crossing Over” SuidAkrA brings a little variety into their new release. An nearly instrumental track which slowly builds up the tempo and paying a lot of attention to the skills of the musicians, an accustic interplay in the middle of the song, only accompanied by atmospheric whispers, ending up with great guitar solos. With “Vortex of Carnage” SuidAkrA is back in their core element of Melodic Death Metal and are destroying everything that gets in their way. Once again you receive a nice prelude to the following song “Resurgence” with some celtic influenced melodies and this time bagpipes and violins are as well used during the song itself, which creates the first time on the album a kind of “Folk Metal Feeling”. Right with the next song “Redemption” the focus is clearly again back on the hard driven guitars, blastbeats and growls. With the last song “A Shrine for the Ages” SuidAkrA brings a kind of celtic metal ballad with clean singing and bagpipes, a worthy end to the album. For myself there are two aspects, which make this release and SuidAkra such strong. The first one is that SuidAkrA can always deliver in all kinds of genres they are playing. If it was the accustic album “Cimbric Yarns”, their celtic folk metal classics “Book of Dowth” and “Caledonia” or even this more Melodic Death Metal driven album “Wolfbite”. I also need to say that even on this new record itself the band brings a lot of variety into their songs. The second aspect is that SuidAkrA really understands to constantly evolve their style and with “Wolfbite” the focus clearly lays on more hard driven Metal, which brings up one of the most aggressive albums in their history.Big Congratulations and a big “Thank you!” to SuidArkA in delivering us such a great, solid and worthy album Nr. 15!

Album:

Exactly 30 years to the month after the band was founded, German melodic/Celtic death metallers SUIDAKRA present their 15th studio album! Musically, the band seem to be returning to their early years with these 11 tracks, as DarkanakraD is undoubtedly dominated by melodic death metal parts, but at the same time also undergoes further development. The album, whose title translates as “Armageddon”, sounds as fresh and powerful as if the band had sprung from a fountain of youth and concludes the “Realms Of Odoric” trilogy, which began in 2016 with the album of the same name. The 11 songs, recorded and mixed for the first time by mastermind Arkadius himself at his own GHA Studio in Würzburg, were mastered by death metal legend Dan Swanö. This was something of a dream come true for Arkadius, as Edge Of Sanity played a formative role in the musical and melodic direction of the band in Suidakra's early days. With anAt The Gates medley at the end of the record, Suidakra also pay tribute to another influence of their founding years. The content concept, as well as the corresponding artwork, was once again created by Kris Verwimp and so “Darkankrad” contains everything that has shaped the band over the last 30 years and is an album that could not have been a better present for the band's anniversary, both for themselves and their die-hard fans!
