Sleaze hard rock band from New York with only one album "Alleycat Smile" (1992-1993) which was re-released in 2007 by Retrospect Records.The music industry is a cut-throat business, and many hard rock bands have had the painful experience of seeing their recorded material never see the light of day, just sitting in boxes or gathering dust. Fortunately, some labels, such as Retrospect Records, have taken the initiative of releasing these bands' works several years after they were recorded.ALLEYCAT SMILE (not to be confused with ALLEYCAT SCRATCH, the Glam band that became a cult following the release of Deadboys In Trash City) is one such band (many of whom appeared on the Hard/Heavy scene in the late 80s and early 90s). Originally due for release in 1992, the album was unearthed in 2007 thanks to the work of Retrospect Records. What kind of music does ALLEYCAT SMILE play? Hard rock/sleaze in the vein of what was being done in the late 80s and early 90s. Or to be more precise, a sort of mix between L.A GUNS (the singer-bassist's voice is pretty close to Phil Lewis's, but without screaming cloning) SVEN GALI and EVERY MOTHER'S NIGHTMARE.

The recordings from 1992-93 of New York hard rockers ALLEYCAT SMILE, some only released locally others unreleased, all compiled by Retrospect Records under this self-titled CD remastered with a fine sound quality.ALLEYCAT SMILE arrived too late, but they had the chops for sure. Think a mix of early MOTLEY CRUE, L.A. GUNS, VAIN, a melodic hard rock touch here and there, and you have the band’s sound. Even on one track they add an AORish touch backing vocals similar to DANGER DANGER.‘Whip Strikes Flesh’ is a kick ass sleazy rocker with a lot of VAIN to it, a punchy riff and catchy as Hell chorus is the motto of ‘Castles In The Sky’, while on the midpaced-heavy ”Time Waits For No One” the band creates atmospheres similar to ICON.A fat bass is present on the dirty ‘Ritual’ which seems recorded in Hollywood and not in NY, ‘Starflight’ is more groovy hard rock with a sleazy feel, and ‘Sayonara’ has a little of TIGERTAILZ to it. One of the best tracks is without a doubt ‘Passion’, inviting you to make a party.‘Say Goodbye’ is the ballad with acoustics in the mix, and it’s ‘Kid Electric’ the song s with a more melodic hard rock style, a favorite.While some of the songs on “Alleycat Smile” needed a little more polish in arrangements, there’s its charm: pure rock n’ roll sleazy from a bunch of youngsters hungry for recognition.Kickin’, fun, punchy stuff.Out of print CD.
